That's one of the most creative game ideas I've ever seen. And it taught me that, to live a happy life, I should just do the opposite of what I enjoy doing. Then I'll have lots of money, a house, a family—and that has to be enough :D Joking aside, it's an awesome concept with depth—I think it's really, really cool!

Developer

Haha thanks for the great comment! But no! That's the opposite of the lesson I was trying to teach here haha. The game doesn't care how rich Gary is, you only win if he dies happy :)

One of the most unique takes on the theme and then it is also executed so well.

The drawn aesthetic, the intro sequence/tutorial, the sound effects, the feedback and details everywhere. Just perfect. Probably the game I have tried this jam with the most personality and identity.

The gameplay itself was not super engaging, but the creativity of the life events and voicelines keeps you playing anyway. Managing the different timelines triggered some video editing ptsd for me. Incredible work - I almost can't believe you did all of this alone. Very impressive.

Developer

Wow! Thanks for this really nice comment. I work as a video editor professionally so you can see where my inspiration came from haha. Thanks again!!!

Events pushing others out of the way is brilliant! very unique idea and wonderful execution

Seriously such a well put together game! The idea was great, the art was gorgeous, the music tied the whole thing together perfectly.

“Gary died ecstatic” What I’m learning is that the secret to a happy life is 3 children, 2 wives, and a long term job in an industry tangential to your interest, while doing your interest part time.

Might not want to go for a second wife and third kid, but the rest seems to track IRL.

Well done on the entry!

This was such an interesting take on the theme! Really nicely done. The art was great, the music was cool, and the little voice clips really elevated the whole thing to the next level. I found it a little challenging to keep up with the moving timeline, but after a couple attempts I got the hang of it!

A small UX thing you might consider– at the very beginning of the game, when you grab your first life event, you could put a little reticle or flashing icon on each of the three lanes to show where you’re supposed to drop the event. At first I thought I was supposed to drag things “into” the childhood slot.

Again, great job. I hope this one keeps getting more attention!

Love the idea, really fun game, I manage to win with loads of money. I found I either made heaps or i was like negative hundreds and just had to restart.

Would be nice if i could make decisions while paused, or could slow time so i could read all my options, and yeah just expanding and having more events and options of what gary can do would be great (if you continue to work on this).

Anyway had fun playing, and the level of polish is impressive nice job!

Thanks! I'll check out your game for sure but just fyi, generally I think it's better if you don't ask people directly like this. I was gonna check your game out anyway as I think it's common code amongst game jam developers to do so.

Loved being in Gary's shoes, pretty fun and intresting game. My Gary lived a very... questionable life but only because i half listened to the tutorial! Great entry! :D

really unique concept and i love the art style!

Fun interpretation of the theme. I liked the mechanic of the slowly aging timeline and dragging activities on to it. I don't know if I was doing something wrong with the way I was playing but even though Gary was married his wife kept asking to propose. I guess Gary just got remarried a ton lol. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Oh no! Did your Gary have more than one relationship at the same time? That's the only way I can think of that happening. If not then I'm sorry for the bug. Glad you had fun!

Submitted

Yeah I thought relationship tile was for spending time with the 1 person multiple times but I guess now I understand it wasn't intended to work that way. No worries.

Developer(+1)

LOL so you had Gary juggling like 50 relationships? Haha that's funny. Your Gary was a playaaa

Really cool concept! Enjoyed it a lot, loved the art style and Gary.

Very interesting game! I tried several runs to explore the different possible paths. If you plan to expand the game, you could add more events throughout Gary's life. For instance, in one of my runs, he managed to work until he was 100 without any consequences, which felt a bit odd ^^'

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to check this out! Yeah, I'll see about expanding this idea. There's already so many things I wish I had done a bit differently but game jam pressure will force you to deliver whatever you got. There is consequence for working past retirement age - Gary loses happiness every year - but if he's got a really good relationship/family or loves his job, then it sort of cancels out. If I had more time I would've playtested it to get it balanced.

Super fun little experience! I love how the game mostly just throws you in and keeps the pace up, making each decision hectic and in a rush making Gary's life awfully realistically unpredictable. The life lessons I've learned is to always follow your passion, reject capitalism, and if things go south: there's nothing being a severe alcoholic in your 90's can't fix. Love it!

Developer

Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed it. And yeah lol. Those honestly seem like pretty valuable lessons to apply to everyday life.

That intro and art style is really great! Slightly loud KACHING! sound when things are going well but otherwise the sounds are great too. Really interesting take on the jam

Cute little game! It's pretty funny that you can just keep stacking relationships, weddings and kids.
....Gamedev being the highest paying job in the second category is truly wishful thinking!

At some point in every person's life, they must take on 3 mortgages. Why, you may ask?

At another point in every person's life, they must understand that "debt" is more of a..... "game mechanic that *doesn't* make you happy". Have that new car. Throw that party. Get into a relationship. Throw that party. Pursue your dreams. Get dumped. Throw that party. Become an alcoholic. Throw that party. Throw that party. Throw that party. Throw that party. and die ECSTATIC. wait i forgot to retire

Developer

Hahaha, sounds like Gary had quite a ride with you :D

Excellent submission all around. I went all in on gamedev and died of suicide. Grim fate. I love it.
