Feedback: idk I gotta git good

Submitted(+1)

took me a while that the goal is to gain height before dive. it feels really good when we dive. it’s got a lot of potential. good work!

Really fun, I really really enjoyed using the hook after I got the hang of it not pulling you towards your target, and I loved having to optimize my movement and make a bunch of fun routing decisions as I got better and better at climbing the mountain. Main critique I have is that I would like the camera to pan way down while falling, many of my runs got ruined by not being able to tell where the boost rings were since they were so off-screen that I was forced to memorize their locations. Still very cool, hella fun game

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and for the nice comment!

The camera panning down would be a great addition, will keep that in mind, thx!!

Really great game, and shows how a jam entry really doesn't need the most complex mechanics, story, or other assets to be really good!  I got to -416m before I figured I'd seen most all of what there is.

Since I try to leave some constructive feedback on every game I play, I do feel like the late-game neccessitating lots of hooks kind of punishes the players who find really good optimal routes with hooks as they're forced to relearn those areas in more time-consuming and uncreative routes in order to save hooks for the end.  The down-thrusters for lack of better name also had too large of an impact on the dive imo since I would often get much higher than before but miss one or two of them which felt like my accomplishments were unrewarded.  And then when I finally strung both getting to a similar height with hitting all the down-thrusters it just felt like I progressed because I happened to hit them on the way down.  Maybe I'd feel better about them also if it felt like there was more skill to hitting them on the way down.

This idea would also be very fun to see with different/more platforming mechanics!!  My brain started imagining the same design but with the platforming mechanics of something like downwell, and there's a lot of different ways you could expand on the game simply by unlocking more platforming mechanics (likely of limited quantity) as you reach deeper and deeper.  Bravo!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!! And thanks for the feedback, I 100% agree with it. The down-thrusters being to impactfull (and then the actual hight being less impactfull) is something I noticed after some time in development, but at that point I wouldve had to change alot about the balance between how deep you can dive with the weaker thrusters & upgrade-depth so I didnt have the time (and was also a bit lazy lol). And the reliance on the hooks higher up is something I haven't really thought about, but after you (and another comment) pointed it out I totally agree with you that it would be better with way less mandatory hooks!

Maybe i will expand on this game in the future with more mechanics and a better structure. When planning ideas at the start of the jam I also thought about something like downwell but didnt think about it again after I got the final idea, but now that you mention it a combination of the two could be really really cool!

Thx for the great comment and thx for playing :D

Of course!

Reading through the comments and saw someone mention procedual generation which definitely could be a great expansion and would void most all of my issues with late game requiring more hooks as the early areas would at least always feel fresh!  Combining this game with procedual generation would make like the first great innovation on the Doodle Jump formula since, well, Doodle Jump.

This is the game jam game i played the most, not only from this jam, but ever (I think I'm at 3 hours and something).

Needless to say that i absolutely LOVED the game. I had a similar concept with my submission, not specifically, but the general idea of replaying the same platformer level over and over while gaining new abilities and power ups which allow you to take new shortcuts and faster paths. But your interpretation of this idea is just so addicting. I'm not kidding, i have to study this thing. At first i played for like half an hour and then i had to leave the house so i closed the game, but when i came back the curiosity got me, i had to know what was up there (or down there in the depths). so i started playing again. That's really rare for me. And my rational side was like "nothing is going to be up there for me, it's a jam game, and it's clearly just a score based game" but man i had to know! And eventually the platforming gets so precise and satisfying, and also you start thing about saving up harpoons, so you start thing about the route you want to take to be fast but also able to save resources for the last big jumps and... everything works together so well.

Eventually i got to (what i think is) the end (where there are a lot of jump through platforms on top of each other), i got there a couple of times but couldn't get all the boost circles while diving, so my highest lowest scor is about -200, i don't know what's the theoretical maximum-minimum,

Anyway, incredible game, so simple yet perfect, I will definitely try your other stuff. tomorrow. I played way too much of this now.

At first I thought this was going to be a simple timed platformer, but I loved the mechanic of gaining abilities to breeze through the level faster by taking shortcuts, it makes a very simple yet engaging game loop.

Well done, the harpoon and the dive are quite satisfying too!

It's so fun to optimize your path up, and the dive is really satisfying!

Genuinely the funnest game ive played in this jam!

Submitted(+1)

Damn this is just an addicting game play loop. And the platforming+hook is well executed. Great job!

(+1)

this was fun!

Not only did I enjoy the game's core mechanics and the game itself alot, but also the fact that you DO listen to feedback and tried to improve the game based on it. Really amazing work you did there. Do not stop on your journey 🐛

This game is great! it's really fun to play! I love the artwork and music a lot, too.

Submitted(+1)

I see a path to -500m if i couldved saved one more hook, is there an ending?

Developer(+1)

There isnt really an ending, but at some point the platforms stop so there is a maximum. (or minimum ig)

Thx for playing and grinding :D

Submitted(+1)

Really good work here! It starts repetitive but quickly turns really addicting!

Submitted(+1)

really fun HOOK for an incremental game. finally something different without a bland skill tree. well made but requires more polishing - the general premise for a gamejam game is really well executed though

Submitted(+1)

I really like how you used the theme, getting higher and higher is really satisfying !

I got to 80 meters but at some point runs became pretty long, and with the hooks becoming compulsory to progress after some point, I kept running out of hooks way before the timer ended, so I had to wait for a long time before being able to jump. I wish there was a way to jump without having to wait until the countdown reaches zero.

The game is overall really fun, well done!

Submitted(+1)

this is very crative and well fit for the theme, my hearth is racing, i had a blast added to favorites!

Submitted(+1)

My high sore is 900 m hhhhhhh
Great job!

+ Hope to try our game
