How does your game fit the theme?
You only have 7 seconds to eliminate your targets, but by chaining combos you may stop the countdown briefly, or even reverse it altogether with the legendary hyper-shuriken.

This might not be my preferred game but there are some good points:

1) Great concept delivery of having a very limited time that really pushes the use of the hyper shuriken. I imagine time as a common interpretation of the theme (didn't play much games as time of this writing) but this is a good use of it.

2) I'm going to commentate from the perspective of a beat-em-up/stylish combat enjoyer here: I feel like the hitbox of the hyper shuriken is not that intuitive especially when trying to chain multiple hits. Having to move towards the shuriken moves away some of my expectations going into this.

I imagine if the shuriken slightly moves towards the player, and if it doesn't fly as high vertically (if it arcs lower), and have a more forgiving hitbox (if you are inside the shuriken), it would make it so that the player was able to focus on aiming where the shuriken will go, rather than trying to position themselves better.

Otherwise, great concept delivery, but the actual gameplay itself can be hard to swallow for me.

Developer

I really appreciate the detailed feedback here - great point about the hitbox on the shuriken. I wish I had set aside a few more hours to figure out exactly how I'd like to make it more accessible, and that's most likely the way I'm going to tackle it moving forward (bigger hitbox, less focusing on positioning). I'm trying to raise the skill floor without lowering the skill ceiling and I think this is the way to do it. Thanks! :)

Well done movement and nice artstyle!  You should try to develop this further after the event, when you have more time :D

Developer

Appreciate your words, we are definitely considering continuing this!

Submitted(+1)

This remind me of ghostrunner. The movement is very smooth and i like the shuriken mechanic.
Great work.

Developer

Thank you!

Loved the game, so creative and fast paced.  Would love to play a longer version some day. I can't wait to see what it could become with more time to work on it. :)

Developer

Thank you!!

Looks like nobody posted a video of their best times in the tutorial levels. Hopefully the video I posted should get me on the leaderboards, and help give you a better idea of the issues with this game.

I'm able to hit the shuriken to stop time but then... where did the shuriken go? I eventually was able to chase after the shuriken to hit it a second time, but I certainly couldn't aim it precisely enough to do that AND beat enemies in multiple different directions...

The concept of stopping a countdown with your shuriken was very creative, though!

Developer(+1)

Hi :) Thank you so much for taking the time to write this and even record the gameplay, that's huge for us and gives us a lot of info to work with. I will be sure to add you to the leaderboards tomorrow!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, thank you for playing and giving us feedback! There is a lot of tweaking we'd like to do to make many mechanics (the shuriken in particular) more intuitive.

I've just added your times to the leaderboard!

Combat felt good, feel like death animations could be nice though, as the enemies just disappearing felt a bit dissatisfying.

Developer

Thanks so much for the review! I totally agree and we will add something like that soon :)

I did really like the melee fighting, it was pretty fun to play. Very hotline-miami esque almost. I think there for sure needed some more juice here, particles and more sound effects would go a long way. It also could use a bit of polish to make some things require less precision. The ranged attack was frustrating to use at times. Overall, great work, and a very impressive entry for a jam.

Developer (1 edit)

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the review! :) I definitely agree that currently the shuriken needs the most polish, our most consistent feedback is that the shuriken is difficult to use.

Is there anything you had in mind for some things requiring less precision? (the shuriken shooting at enemies, hitting the shuriken, etc). Right now we have aim assist on the shuriken but it may need to be increased, or have an option to toggle it.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Yeah, both shooting and hitting the shuriken. I also felt throwing the shuriken was very slow, it didn't feel satisfying. I spent time lining up my shots which I don't think is how the game was meant to be played. Wall jumping also disoriented me a couple of times. Maybe use Ultrakill as inspiration? They have a mechanic where you can shoot coins you throw in the air that reminds me of your shuriken mechanics.

What a game. Trully could be a full steam game that costs. I have ALOT to say so lets get started. The movement in this game is really good. BUT, i REALLY am sure that a double jump would help ALOT. i like the climbing mechanic and its really good that you need to be careful with your movement. The game itself is really good, i enjoyed playing it and couldnt get past only 2 levels. But there are some flaws. The time stop mechanic is good, i really like the concept. But its way to hard to do efficiently. The timestop itself isint the problem here. Its the way you need to get back to the shuriken and hit it again before doing another timestop, and some levels timestop is  needed, so it becomes very very difficult. If you miss once you're done and that isin't very fair. BUT, i like the way you can hit the shuriken and kill many enemies depending on where it lands. I dont know how you can polish the shurikens but maybe you can have 2-3 on you, and they cant be picked up, they come back to you only if you get like a chained timestop. So if i miss 2 shurikens and have one last, and i succesfully hit a target, if i timestop once, i get my shuriken back, if twice i get 2, ect. And if you dont you can atleast pick it up from where it was. like your current shuriken mechanic. Overall great game with potential to be a full fledge steam game. Also please R to restart. Its annoying to know you are done for, and you gotta wait for the timer. Amazing game to be done in 4 days.

Thank you so much Kazuki for the detailed feedback and review, I really appreciate the time you took to write this! This is the kind of review every developer hopes to hear (lots of care and attention). We will take this all into consideration as we work on the game :)

Its a pleasure :) Every review needs to have a purpose. I wish the best for your game! and I dont think leaving undetailled review or JUST opinion will help you guys at all. Im sure your game will succeed! If i can have one request, and i know it might be too much i know. But if you make this a vr game. IF you guys have time to do this of course, i will definitly buy it and im sure many people would. Its good on pc too but i feel like in vr it would shine just like SUPERHOT.

BANZAAIII!

Gets pretty challenging after a while. The time stop mechanic with the shuriken may use some polish - it is pretty easy to lose track of it, making it a tad difficult to time the attacks. Maybe a sound effect would've been better here.

Great work so far, cheers!

Developer(+1)

Agreed about the sound effect, that actually slipped through the cracks in my madman to-do scrawlings LOL

Kind of a hard game, but it goes to my GMTK collection because to me it feels a bit like Ghostrunner which is one of my favorite games (also hard game as well). I really like the gameplay and audio but the artwork/graphics hinder the gameplay a bit. I would have picked something in the style of Super Hot, where the colors are very pronounced and you have a hard color contrast between environment and enemies. Still really well put together and fun to play, very cool game.

Developer(+2)

Glad you enjoyed it, and great feedback about the graphics! We are definitely playing more with what the game will look like in the future.

This game is HARD! I loved the time stopping mechanic and trying to chain hitting the thing in the air while stopping time and get time back but it was so hard to actually being able to.. and it was so funny when I struggled so much on level 1, after all the training, and I got to finish the level with 0.0 time remaining

If you have the reflexes to do all of this, I invite you to play mine, way easier lol

Developer

Haha, that's the first 0.00 score I've seen! Thank you for the feedback!! I would love to balance the game in the future more so almost all of the levels are more accessible.

Submitted(+1)

Damn, wtf, this game is awesome! Great level design and gameplay. From the first level it felt great and I had a super fun time playing through the game. Excellent game!

Developer

Thanks so much, really glad to hear you enjoyed it so much! :)

Wow the movement feels very good and polished. Really it makes a lot of fun to navigate through the short levels. The shuriken is really cool ... the way you can launch it again onto the enemies is soo sick.

It's also has a lot of replayability because I want to improve my times

Developer

Thank you!! Glad to hear you like the movement and shuriken mechanics :) I do think the shuriken mechanics could be polished a bit

Submitted(+1)

Seems like a mix between Super Hot and Neon White ! The concept is simple but clean, and the time stop is a nice add. I feel like you should have put your own time to give a target to overcome !

Well done on the game :)

Developer(+1)

Great point about the developer times. Definitely going to put that in when we keep working on it. Thanks for the review!

nice game though the mouse was never locked to my screen making it hard to throw and slash stuf

Developer(+1)

Dang I'm sorry to hear that, but thank you for playing! We will look into the mouse lock issue.

This is an interesting game design: I've never seen something controversial met in one game, but I enjoyed it. I have tried to pass through 3rd outdoor level I think - it was difficult, ahah

(+1)

Good concept, fun and fast pace.  I even love the name.  I beat all levels and now trying to get betters score by chaining the hits like in the video...  tough!

Agree with the below, this does have potential.
