Actually, that is the same. Apreciating good food is exactly the same as apreciating good art.
You are right, food is vital. But it is not vital that the food tastes good.
And making "shitty art" is rather performance art than art. Also, you should be able to make non-shitty art, before anyone believes you do it intentionally.
Excusing bad art with artistic expression is cheap. So is burning food or putting pineapples on pizza. Just because it's different and tastes strange, does not make it something worth of apreciation.
