My game was indexed which was great! But it was listed only alongside NSFW - erotica games.
It definitely isn't one of those! It's only mildly adult in themes like a PG13.

Itch doesn't have a PG-13 rating or any rating system. A game is either NSFW or it's SFW, regardless of whether it has erotic or sexual content, or simply offensive language.
If your game, for any reason, has content that could be considered adult, then it will fall into the NSFW category.
Which tag would that be? Visual novel?
You need to deselect this setting in your Itch account configuration.
Your game is on /games/newest/genre-visual-novel and yes there will also be nsfw games that are newest and displayed near your game.
Nevermind. You seemed to have configured your game yourself as sensitive content. Yes, that is nsfw and there is no inbetween. And since Itch is in the US, that will also mean any naked female pixel boob, even if the same game would be rated 12+ officially in some countries.
It's not an age category. Which makes it confusing.
If you think your game should not be played by 13 year old kids or should not be seen at a workplace, you should mark it as sensitive.
And Itch might have a different opinion. Especially the workplace thing is very vague and usually a little pixel nudity would be enough for that.
