Super interesting and packed adventure with so much cool stuff, impressive!
What I think worked well
What I thought could be improved
Thank you for the detailed feedback 🙏 Good point on gathering all the key terms in one spot! There’s definitely space to reorganize some things and clarify others to make it clearer to the reader.
Amazing layout, great maps and the color scheme really elevates this scenario. The theme is fun and each location feels unique without becoming “too gonzo”. I liked how there were a lot of creatures and people unique to the setting while using standard stat blocks from the base rules. The only thing I felt was missing for a Shadowdark adventure was some more treasure and interesting items.
Thanks for the comment 🙏
Extremely cool ideas here: vulture dæmon tied up in a ball. Moustache mechanic. My personal favorite touch is: "Elf trapped inside crystal for 444 years. Grew butterfly wings and telepathy."
Love the vibes of this chaotic dream seance dance party! The graphic design is legendary, and the final adversary Mrepytun sounds awesome. Well-written location keys and GM guidance. I think the Anteater, Victoria, is my favorite of the characters in the module. Wonderfully dangerous and deadly adventure!
Thank you for the kind words 🙏 The Victoria and Sawara friendship is truly amazing and crosses the eons! Fun fact: Victoria’s name comes from the Victoria amazonica plant. I chose it to match her boat/hat :)
Many will praise the lush art or the clean, effective text. There is a lot of effort at work, and a pleasere in making finely crafted adventures, here. What i find even more astounding is how the Author saw the Realm of Dead as a post industrial landscape. One can learn and practice their skills on art and tesxtmanship, but good ideas like this are the raw material one can't do without if they want to really reach their audience heart.
Thanks for the comment 🙏 Yeah, I really wanted the Realm of the Dead to look more contemporary because I was inspired by the affirmation of the author Ailton Krenak that the indigenous people of the Americas already live in a post-apocalyptic world. Not very Appendix N for a reference, but I wanted to counterpoint views of authors like HP Lovecraft that put indigenous people as collaborators of eldritch begins, while in many indigenous cosmogonies, their religious practices is all about appeasing natural spirits and maintaining balance so the world can continue to exist
cultured reference and smart use of it!
All the individual elements of writing, layout, map, colour, vibes, etc. come together and play off each other like notes in a song, creating whole that is much greater than the sum of its parts. 👌
Thanks 🙏
First of all, the most stand out point of this adventure is the map. I love the exterior and interior map come as a package and every point of them has interesting event or environment. Also I love how you point out that certain things are in different place, it makes it makes running the adventure much more easy. ANd I love the part where the room suddenly turned upside down on the last area. Love it.
Thanks for the comment 🙏
The module captures the theme very well and is as creepy as it should be considering the theme. Clear writing and an amazing layout. Love it!
Thank you for the comment 🙏
The whole lore is awesome and the realm of the dead feels as dark as it should be. Absolutely love the map and the little depiction of Mrepytun because the demon's description sounded awesome and happy to see it at the end! I kind of want to root for Mrepytun.
Mrepytun only wants to get free and get a little snack :D Thanks for the comment!
Gonna really struggle to find a submission better than this one I think.
When I first downloaded it I thought, man that’s a lot of text. The front cover seemed chaotic at first but I quickly realized that every scrap of text has been placed thoughtfully to follow the flow of the reader’s eye down the page.
This theme of careful consideration continues through the module as it is clear nothing here is an afterthought. The feel is deliciously pulpy, from the shamanic/wizardly patron to the Realm of the Dead actually just being a post-apocalyptic Earth. The encounters are meaningful and actually appear to add a lot to the playability of the module. Despite the short word count, it manages to be funny and surprising in a lot of places, like the lucky-rub moustache statue. Art direction is impeccable and works in very close conjunction with the writing. The icing on the cake for me is that even with a very tight page limit, you found space to add a GMing tip for those who are new to pointcrawls. I have a real sense of the effort you put into this to create something that delivers without compromise despite being in such a tiny form factor. Extremely well done!
Thank you for the kind review 🙏
Good adventure! I love how the map represents the passage to the world of the dead through smoke. Great art and original, fun locations!
Thanks 🙏
Wow, now this is something I could and would actually run! There's a lot of action and visual noise, but it all still works for me!
A few favorite things:
I love how you've made the Between Worlds aspect thematically cohesive and mechanically relevant. One question that the GM can easily rule, but I wonder how you intended it: apart from the initial entrance to the Realm of the Dead, where does a player's spirit project after dancing? Do they always follow the point-crawl from the start, return to where they were before waking, or (for convenience's sake) pop up with the rest of the party?
Really, really cool module!
Actually, I just realized the map is keyed with a "W" instead of an "M". Unplayable. ;)
It's upside down, my man!
It’s keyed in the same direction as the gravity in that room 🙃 I wanted to use the key to reinforce the non-euclidian weirdness of the tower that you climb down towards the rooftop. I’m glad so many folks have been picking up on it!
Ah, that went right under my head!
Thanks a lot for the lovely comment! 🙏 I had a couple of iterations on F to try to keep it as simple while leaving enough info to come up with a ruling. I’m glad it is being enjoyed!
The intent with dancing after awaking is to return where you were before, so you could technically have a battle that happens in parallel in both realms (like the last encounter in case the possession hits). I could see a case for showing up with the party as well if they move forward, though probably I’d rule against if the party just wants to skip challenges using that interpretation. I could also see a case to rule for players to return to the start, for instance in the case the party traps themselves somewhere somehow (maybe inside a random building) and need to try a different route. So ultimately, I think any of these cases could have their place as a ruling, though probably the module would’ve been a bit better with making the intent more explicit.
Returning to where the character had been before does seem like the implied ruling, but I do kinda like the unstated flexibility!
Really liked that the Realm of the Dead was a mirror image of modern post-industrialization- that slaps!
The map is great & the colors are fantastic! The only thing I would’ve liked to have seen more of is more ways for the dancers to be attacked/fail.
Thanks for the comment 🙏
I had at least one other sketch for an encounter that would attack the dancers directly, but I ended up not enjoying it much, ended up cutting it, and made possession the go-to way of attacking the shamans.
Love the weirdness. Design is engaging and serves the theme with no loss in usability. Love the point crawl map.
Thank you 🙏
The time for dancing has indeed arrived! Super fun point-crawl in the realm of the dead. I love the mechanic of waking up/going to sleep, the fact the adventure takes place in both realms, and that it’s not decided ahead of time when PCs are woken up to take care of business in the living realm. I really like the little personal stories of the NPCs, with the missing friend of Victoria, the not-giving-a-damn nature of the concierge, and bowl-cut sporting shaman. Lots of personality in very little text. Well done!
The whole adventure has a very video-gamey feel, in a good way, but especially the tower feels very much like stages in a video game. I like the change in pace when entering the tower, and even though I was a little confused by the upside-down “M” floor (not the actual floor, just the fact it’s upside-down), it doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a super solid adventure. I would love to play this as a one-shot!
edit: I forgot to mention the map! I love it. Full of character and does the job super well.
Thanks a lot for the comment 💜
I’m happy to know the tower and the upsidedown M is slightly confusing at first 😀 I feel like it would be wrong to have a non-euclidian space that doesn’t make people feel slightly odd about it 😛
Very cool pointcrawl! It reminds me of classic Planescape adventures and would fit right in with the adventure anthologies Well of Worlds or Tales from the Infinite Staircase. The isometric maps are very well made and sit beautifully within the layout!
Some general feedback:
I love the idea that characters can wake and return to their bodies, but since they can do it instantly, can they just escape any dangerous situation? I was also unsure what happens when they begin dancing again. Do they return where they left off, or start over at the ritual site? Are the enemies still waiting for them? A little clarification would help.
The ending seems to come down to one DC 18 Strength check to throw the Coils at Mrepytun. What happens if it fails? Can someone else try, or can they recover the rope and keep trying? It might be nice if choices made during the adventure could improve their chances.
I was also unsure how possession works. The main rules say the body is taken and the spirit suppressed, but the final encounter says it lasts 2d4 rounds. What does the character do during that time, and what happens when it ends?
Thanks for the detailed comment! I kept the text as minimal as I could, so great points you bring about the ambiguity of the text! Seeing if I can elaborate on some of the points:
The intent is for your spirit returns to where you were before, so anyone in the Realm of the Dead can choose to wait for your return.
Yeah, you can always pick up the rope and keep trying. I’d rule that it probably lands behind the cultists if the PCs weren’t cautions about their throw. Also, as per Shadowdark rules, every time they attempt the same test, the DC is reduced, so this should help bringing it to a close in just a few throws.
The intent for possession is to work similarly to how a ghost’s possession works, but your body is in another realm and the corrupted spirits want to kill the shamans and stop the ritual, so for the duration, my intent is that the PC’s body will try their best to make the ritual fail. At the end of the rounds, it returns to normal. I left it vague if the suppressed spirit returns to the body or the Realm of the Dead, but either is valid and in the spirit of the adventure.
I think it could’ve been interesting to add more elements to help characters in the final encounter, as you mentioned. It’s something I thought about, but didn’t develop further. I had placed the Flying elf in the chrysalis specifically to be a possible ally, and technically you could ally with the other spirits of previous rituals, but at least during my playtest, players only allied with the gnomes of the factory to cross the bridge. Definitely something to think about!
Thanks again for the comment and the feedback 🙏
Besides the obvious beautiful layout and maps, lots of great little details. Wasn’t expecting a literal Plato;s Cave.
Haha! I’m glad someone picked up on one of the little Easter eggs / inspirations I hid in there :D
It does not need to be said that the visuals are stunning, does it?
I haven’t seen anything like this module before and there are question that might be answered by reading it again more carefully, but that does not change the fact, that maps, theme and encounters look great!
Thanks for the comment 🙏
Awesome map and I really like the purple / green colour palette you used, very striking. Great little tip for doing a point crawl and I like the easy presentation of each location making it easy to run at the table. Very creative adventure! 🔥
Thanks for the comment 🙏
It'll be hard to argue this isn't one of the best of the jam, let alone best for the Shadowdark entries. One could nitpick that the sparse text and the fairly complex pitch of this adventure might be a little bit of a lift for a GM but it's just art all the way down (and that art is also art, really good art).
If anything I don't know that I've experienced anything Appendix-N-ish that feels like this one does. The underworld delving, bureaucratic cubi, etc, give me some Urban Fantasy vibes.
Thanks a lot for the comment 🙏 The theming is the part that I’ve always been the most insure about, but I’m glad it feels like it fits.
Heya!
I'm organizing a collaboration between all of the Shadowdark Appx. N creators on Discord. If you're interested look me up in the SD Discord or reach out in DMs.
