How does this game fit the theme of 'fishing'?
The objective of the game is to catch fish, even though catching them requires a sense of rhythm.

Does this game include any Generative AI?
No Generative AI has been used in the creation of this game (at least not knowingly).

I'm a (casual) fan of rhythm games so I was really happy to see one show up in this game jam! Obligatory at this point, but I agree with the other saying that they found the controls a little iffy. I liked the music, and I found the difficulty and the scoring system to be well balanced! I might be misunderstanding something, but on the end screen, my totals wouldn't always add up to the total number of notes. For example, on level 1 Easy, I believe it showed that there were 31 notes to hit, and it showed 4 Hits, 25 Critical Hits, and 4 misses. Aside from that and a slight browser slowdown that may have caused an audio desync(?) on Level 2 Easy, this was a very smooth gameplay experience that I enjoyed! I'm glad you submitted.

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and for the comments!

With regards to the note totals, the misses are being counted as anytime you press the wrong input and anytime you press the input too early or too late.

Because an early miss doesn't take away the note you were early on, you can in theory register 2 (or more) attempts for the same note, thus the total notes you played could be equal to or greater than the whole number of notes in the map.

I'm not expecting anyone to realise that though as there is zero explanation in the game, because we ran out of the time (in true game jam fashion) haha. We also had plans for mechanics involving the money but they too did not make it in.

I love the variety of genres represented here in this jam and there's been some really great experiences!

P.S. You missed the chance to describe the controls as "fishy" :P

You're welcome! And OH, that makes a lot of sense! I feel a little silly for not putting that together, but I appreciate the explanation. Believe me, I totally understand not being able to implement everything you want into your game with the tight timeframe of a week! The money thing you mention is really interesting- would you mind if I asked what they might have been?

I did miss the pun opportunity. I'm reel-ly broken up about it now that you've mentioned it. :'(

Developer

Nice, now that's what I'm talking atrout.

So we intended to have a bait shop where you could spend money to buy different baits that increase the chance of catching more valuable fish.

Heavier fish would increase the amount of rod strain when you hit the right input at the wrong time, so we also considered a mechanic where you could upgrade your rod, probably also acquired through spending in-game money in the shop.

Programming was definitely the issue; I think Eric, the artist, could easily have drawn the baits and fish in time, but I would not have got them into the game without a couple of extra days, lol.

I've not been at my computer recently, but I'll make sure to give your submission a whirl sometime soon!

For a one-week game jam, it's an impressive game that worked well within the time constraint. There are definitely some things to be improved, but that's to be expected for a jam.
Since I play a lot of rhythm games, I had a lot of critique to share, so I found it easier to write a google doc. This also allowed me to include links and images for more clear examples. You may choose to look at it or not.

Thank you for giving my game critique as well!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and for the detailed critique; honestly it's mind-blowing to me that someone not only took a few minutes to check the game out but also write up a whole document!

I don't think we have any plans to turn this game into a release, but if we did, we certainly have some good case notes to turn to now!

You're 100% right about the lack of audio feedback on hitting notes or not; we had the audio files prepped but it was one thing too many sadly (we submitted this at 2am GMT Friday, so I was too shattered for more programming lol!).

This is what game jams are all about though; experiencing others ideas and helping each other become better. Thank you for playing and submitting too!

Other than the previously addressed button orientation breaking my brain I had a good time. Level 1,Easy easily lured me into a false sense of security and confidence.

Hits and misses changing the fish on the line's direction is great, so good you should turn it into a true measure for how close the player is to the fail-state! Level 3 did not end after the song, but I made a decent bit of $$$. Give me a dark theme for the play field and you can have all my hard-earned fish-bucks. Great play, good job!

Developer

Is it just me or are you just fishing for compliments with this review? ;)

Dark theme planned for paid DLC... jk.

So there is a fail-state if the fish gets away from you too far, but I agree we would have liked to have visually indicated this better. But as you know, a game jam game is always about compromise and missed features haha.

Thanks for playing, and amazing how different everyone's ideas were!

very nice. a bit wierd controlls, but apart from that there is no bugs or anything. Good job

Developer(+1)

Thanks very much for playing! And there is definitely a recurring theme in these critiques haha.

Oh, there definitely are bugs, but clearly you lucked out and didn't experience them, lol!

Thumbs up. My only annyance is side scrolling notes, but it was still pretty playable.

The rhythm game mechanics are a lot of fun and watching my fish get reeled in as I successfully hit notes feels great. The vertical orientation of the buttons felt weird because my hands are hitting keys on a keyboard that is in a horizontal orientation. The art effects were wonderful and I loved the opening image!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for checking out our game and for the feedback!

The orientation has been mentioned a couple of times and I totally agree, not sure why it never crossed our minds!

I will be personally aiming to rate every single submission and will likely drop some feedback on yours too when I check it out. The best part of game jams is checking out all the different directions people took their projects, so I can't wait to see your take on it! :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the comments! We really appreciate you checking out the game! As the artist, I am super happy to know that you loved the opening image! lol
