This really takes me back to when I used to play fangames of IWBTG every day haha

The SFXs are so ingrained in my brain that it felt good to hear them again and the classic song from the start

I think the game is ok, fun and fair, doesn't have dumb traps or ultra hard jumps, feels like a good introduction for hard games. I really like that the blood stays on the spike that killed you, good pick in changing the jump button to Z, it’s kind of annoying getting the sticky keys pop up when playing this kind of game, though it messes up my muscular memory when pressing R and here I was pressing T xD

About bugs and stuff, I didn’t find any, just I had a very big lag on first death but this is because the browser, after that, went smoothly. My only complaint is that if you touch the sign that teaches you to jump, it locks your jump skill until it says how to jump, it can be skipped if you don’t touch it but feels kind of strange when I replayed the game

Also would be nice a restart button to reset the timer and death in case someone wants to speedrun this, to avoid the refresh of the game page

About the traps, I like them, very classic ones, I like the signs, fun and I like that they want to troll all the time. In this kind of game, I prefer only platforming or avoidance, usually I avoid bosses because I can’t spam the shoot button but here I managed to beat it, I think the difficulty is nice. I would speedrun it but for what I say above I won’t haha, I can reach the boss part fast but then I see the apple and start to feel down hahaha. Also I like the apple as a boss, truly a classic :)

I would say that I would like a harder version but I feel the 1st jump can’t handle that right now, while it feels good for this game, I think it needs a liiittle more control of the Y axis, if I press Z a little bit it jumps a tiny higher than it should? Or maybe the visual of the bird is too big to what I’m used to and gives me this sensation? I can’t put it in words right now but it’s ok as it is right now, if you can do a diamond jump with this setting, then I think it’s good to make a harder version haha

I only think this after playing the screen that gives you the double jump, felt a little small for the bird and tight platforming

I guess that’s all I want to say, I leave my time on my 1st run, would be a lot better but I spend more time on the boss because I’m impatient or I can’t wait much when bosses are easy haha. Nice game, I had fun, really nice to see an IWBTG game ^^

Edit: I found you can stay on ledges haha

Ok that’s lots of words XD. Thank you so much for the professional review and didn’t expect you to be an experienced IWBTG fangame player. I never actually beat the original game myself and my enjoyment of the genre mainly comes from watching people suffering in clips and also the speedrun streams hehe. This somehow was the first idea stuck in my mind when the jam theme was revealed.

The main inspiration of game are the beginning levels of IWBTG and IWBTB. I didn’t have time for background stuffs so they are mostly spike jumpscares. The jump lock on the jump teaching sign was totally intended, like I really want people to K at least once before they even figure out the actual jump button, maybe a bit too evil but it’s totally fine to treat it like a larger spike later on :3.

It’s really a sharp observation on the controls and map size. IWBTG used 25x19 grid layout with a larger resolution while I only used 20x11 here, so the map is indeed smaller than the classical fangames. The controls are also not precisely copied and yeah it feels bit hard to do minijumps. If I ever want to extend the game I probably gonna rework the resolution and controls too. The code is already a mess now… ¬⩊¬

Anyways, glad that you liked the levels and thanks again for beating the game! You might consider the game bit too easy but from my jam ratings the clear rate is only 1 in 8 (12.5%)

yup there is 1px pixel gap around the spikes but the trick is still useless for now

I see, it’s fair to want that, the K it’s fun and made me laugh the 1st time xD
I also used to enjoy the genre like that, it’s fun to watch and see people who are good at completing the fangames :)

I didn’t know that about the grid layout, it’s nice to know :o Now I see why it felt different, it wasn’t bad, I think it’s kind of interesting because it can lead to a different type of gameplay
And I think it’s good that the physics aren't 1:1, it’s fun to experiment or change stuff

My difficulty meter broke a long time ago and I think my opinion on this shouldn’t be counted too much haha. Thanks to the fangames, I tend to do hard stuff and a reason why some of my games are like they are, my gmtk entry was made with fangames in mind xD

I think it’s normal that I find it easy when I used to play this kind of fangames, I never finish them but was fun :)
