How does your art incorporate the theme?
I included as many classic fantasy creatures as I could on this tiny island. A dragon and a cyclopes, knight and princess, unicorns and faeries, you name it

It feels like a cover art for a videogame, which tells what's gonna happen, without giving away the lore. Really well done!

Developer

thanks! I wanted to try doing something that's undeniably pixel art by doing small characters, glad it worked out

Submitted(+1)

I like the artstyle alot!

Developer

thank you, thank you, I had to really "trust the process" for a while before it started to look decent, the thing was fugly I tell ya

Submitted(+1)

lmao I knew this had to be you when I saw it. Good stuff buddy. Love it.

Developer

I'm getting recognition already! my, I must be going places πŸ‘€ heheh thanks mate

This is just amazing. The skill to make this is crazy and the use of color is perfect. The one thing i will say is that it really does fit the theme but it feels like you checked the box of the theme 100 times to make sure, not everything is connected and I get its meant to be some whimsical fantasy island but i wish all the features to fit the theme felt so forced. Hope that makes sense :P

Developer(+1)

it kinda makes sense? I'm not sure if you're saying that the characters didn't all fit the fantasy theme or if they all did fit and it's too much lol
also thanks xD

Submitted(+1)

I was trying to say that all the characters did fit the theme but they feel just placed there to fit the theme, not to necessary make the art piece more of what it should be. That is a harsh way of putting it but don't worry, I put everything 5 star but theme on 4, still generally just fantastic art :D

Developer(+1)

ohhhhh got it, got it, I did have some characters interact but in my mind I just wanted a showcase of some fantasy creatures/elements so them being there was the the main objective with interactions as a nice bonus lol I wanted to go over the top xD though I do get what you're saying, having some characters interact with each other and others being isolated could definitely feel odd, and I think it suffered a bit cause I made it with the intention of animating it which would have made some characters interact with each other more with what I was planning

and thanks again for the feedback, I seriously appreciate it <3

This is some proffesional level stuff 😭

I love the isometric perspective thats going on there and the way you managed to put in all those creatures is amazing.

Developer

profesh!? maybe someday πŸ‘€ I totally wasn't panicking by the end of the first day and debating whether to quit cause of how horrid it looked at the time, definitely not lol

Trusting the process is hard, I get it.

but you did an amazing job in the end!

Day and night versions? That’s fun!

Developer

I couldn't decide!!

Really nice piece! I really like all of the characters and creatures all around! You did a great job with the design as well as the shading and silhouettes! I think my favorite bit is the little frog on the water! (Really cute)

My only two really small critiques would be, that I think that you could have applied a little bit of AA ( Anti Aliasing) all around the piece to smooth out some lines and corners (though I understand that, that might have been a stylistic choice).

And the other tiny nitpick would be that I don't particularly like the right eye of the princess, as I am not sure if was trying to portray a closed eye or something else. Regardless I think it could have been similar to the left eye. Though that is a really really nitpick of mine.

Regardless, an awesome piece! I liked it a lot!

Developer

thanks dude, glad you enjoyed it! and thank you so much for taking the time to give feedback πŸ™

I didn't use AA for multiple reasons, first being that I suck and don't know how to do it xD other reasons are that it's part of the style, I wanted to go for a more cozy and simple cartoony look and I feel AA would have went against that, and I also built this from the ground up with the intention of fully animating it (still intend to), so it would've made it way harder and potentially too noisy for characters this small

as for the eye, I'm assuming you're talking about the right eye from her perspective. the reason I made it that way was cause she was looking slightly to her right, in the knight's direction

Submitted(+1)

Well I can say that I really liked the art style and art direction of the piece! But I can understand why you didn't utilize AA. (And also simply textured and shaded characters are easier for animation so I totally get that too!)

Though I would generally say that learning how to apply AA can be a really useful utilize in your skill board, and can give a piece and even higher level of polish, so an effort to learn more about it can only prove beneficial!

I also think it is really cool that the piece was intended to be animated. And while we sadly didn't get to see this time, I feel like it would be really nice if one day we actually get to see it animated!

Regardless though, I think it was an amazing piece!

Developer

oh I'll definitely learn it someday, though I'm not good at sitting down and learning something specific so I'll do that when I need it lol
and you'll definitely get to see it animated soon, don't you worry about that πŸ‘€

love the composition on this one! feels like a fantasy poly pocket world

Developer(+1)

thanks! the palette isn't helping the poly pocket allegations lol
