What Makes You Keep Playing a Game After the First Hour?

I've noticed that a lot of games can be fun when you first start playing them, but only a few actually keep me interested for weeks or months.

For me, good gameplay mechanics are probably the biggest factor. I also like games that give me different ways to approach a challenge instead of making every level feel exactly the same.

I'm curious about other players here:

What makes you continue playing a game after the first hour?

Is it:

๐ŸŽฎ Interesting gameplay mechanics? ๐Ÿงฉ Strategy and problem-solving? ๐Ÿ“– A good story? ๐Ÿ† Progression and unlocking things? ๐ŸŽจ Art style and atmosphere? ๐Ÿ”„ Regular updates and new content? ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Community/multiplayer?

And what's one game you've played recently that surprised you by keeping your attention longer than expected?

I'd love to hear what everyone is playing and, more importantly, what made you stick with it.

Progression in the game, and that can take many forms. Progression through a story, upscaling irl skill, new content, etc. always helps. If no progression occurs, then the only thing that can make up for it is a highly interactive multiplayer element. That's my two cents anyway

First and foremost, I play a game because of gameplay. If the gameplay fits me, I'd keep playing for hours more. If I really love the gameplay, I might replay the game again someday.

The second reason for me to keep playing is usually progression and stuffs to discover. There are couple games whose gameplay is ok but there are multiple stuffs to discover so I keep playing.

That's about it. Story isn't enough to compel me to keep playing. Art and atmosphere are never my reason to play any game. Regular updates and new stuffs won't matter if gameplay doesn't fit me.

There's no game which surprised me recently yet.

Story/argument. If i find the story interesting and engaging i may continue playing even if gameplay turns a bit repetitive.

i usally play games for 5-10 min when playing

so good gameplay is what i seek for to replay the game

First hour is quite broad in my opinion because not all gameplay durations are 1+ hour, but I got what you mean. ๐Ÿ˜… I, for one, stay playing for 2 things: good story and progression. I could play for HOURS if your game has a good indulging unique story. But of course it depends on the type of game you're playing. For example: a simple game like Arrows makes me play it more than 1 hour because it has simple mechanic and I just want to get on top of that leaderboard. ๐Ÿ˜‚ These reasons are not the same when I play visual novels where my focus is solely on the curiosity of what will happen next ๐Ÿ˜Œ
