Description
The game is an puzzle based adventure game as you play as a space archeologist investigating an extinct alien civilization. You come across an alien ruin built into a massive cave. It's heavy doors are powered by wind turbines that only receive enough power to open it during the windiest day of the year. Inside, the cave is filled with statues that resonate as the wind flows through its openings. As you explore the cave, the wind progressively to turn on different sections of the cave, revealing itself to be an enormous musical instrument. There are more wind turbines hanging from the ceiling that power the many mechanical contraptions scattered throughout the cavern. Using the clues you discover across the alien planet, you have to decode the clues hidden within this forgotten song.

Artwork by Roshanay.

Message from the artist
This draws inspiration from the sonic and environmental artworks such as the Singing Ringing Tree in Burnley, UK and the Sea Organ in Zadar, Croatia. which use the wind and ocean waves to power their sounds respectively. I found the idea of experiencing the art from an extinct species due to them using some form of renewable energy to be fascinating. Many of the instruments feature some level of detuning and other artifacts that come with age. in I treated the wind and the other foley sounds as both performers and instruments, taking part in an inanimate yet live concert. Some of the instruments react to the wind using vocoders, though I had to tone down the reaction by lengthening the attack and release and adding compression as sometimes the wind got too unruly. The sound design gets slightly dissonant for brief periods, which I decided to leave in to embrace the wear and tear of an ancient musical instrument.

I only decided to join the jam with 2-3 days left, so I could only squeeze in one track. Happy I did, was a fun experiment. Looking forward to listening to everyone else's tracks.

At the beginning, there was a really nice kind of dark ambience. Those background foleys were really interesting to listen to. And there was a cool contrast with the pretty ominous synth that played a rather bright melody.

And... during the middle, I could literally see the door open before me. It was a wonderful track, and I would have loved to listen to more. Amazing job.

This is the first song I've listened to that I had to close my eyes for.  I'm in that room.  You crafted that space so well that I could tell how far away certain mechanisms were.  And just speaking about mechanisms, this was truly a machine, and it felt alive.  It's like visiting these historic relics of ancient civilizations and feeling like they have a soul of their own with all the memories of things they've seen and experienced.  And so here, this grand machine shows so much emotion and life and the dissonance works especially well to support that.  And the crescendo at the 2 minute mark was like releasing the full power of this beast as it comes to visit for maybe just this once before it goes dormant again, for who knows how long.  And it was just a pleasure to witness.  Phenomenal

Happy to hear the positional mixing translated well to your listening experience, thanks for the glowing review!

This is incredible. I loved how you incorporated the theme into your submission, the idea and execution were spot on. The sound design conveyed the location, the material, even the temperature a little bit for me, while remaining so cohesive with the music, and the way you simulated 'real-ness' with the detuning, the music speeding up and down with the wind, it's all absolutely stunning. Also, I'm a big fan of the way you integrated mechanical sounds into the music in such a diegetic way, it sounded amazing. Fantastic work, and thank you so much for sharing! I would also love to see the moment this track plays in a game, it would be magical.

Woow man this is incredible creativity I love it ! I see we had common ideas from the theme with the wind and the game settings (your description reminded me of Outer Wilds, as I imagined my game too)

But dang, pushed to the extreme! Given the context of the cave being an enormous alien wind powered instrument it worked magnificently. With the sound design and the work on you sonore palette, I was totally seeing the air moving through holes, tubes and complex mechanisms, omg sooo cool... And the slight detuning effectively gave it the feeling of time erosion.

Amazing concept, amazing realisation of it, I want to see or play that moment in a game or a movie.

Oh and, can you elaborate a bit on the use of vocoder on some instruments ? Like How, Why and What ? 😇 it got me curious !

Marvellous proposition !! If this doesn't win I hope it gets 1st place in creativity, it deserves it. You got my admiration for this ^^ And props to the artist for the artwork, it works great and helps !

Yes, Outer Wilds was a definitely an inspiration (probably one of my favourite games), it fits this game jam's theme very well so I imagine a decent number of submissions have drawn some ideas from it. It's quite funny how we both ended up going with the wind as a major component in our soundtrack. Thank you for your detailed feedback, always good to hear if my ideas came across the way I intended.

Regarding the vocoders I wanted the some of the instruments to automatically react to the wind, so I  set the instrument to be the carrier channel and set the wind as the modulator channel. Unfortunately, the wind with the most character was quite blustery which made the signal very unstable, so I had to increase the attack and release by a decent amount. Added a compressor too to reduce big jumps in amplitude. Even after adjusting the vocoder settings and adding the compressor, the wind was still not very musical and didn't really react nicely to the phrasing of the notes. In the end, I had to settle with adjusting the wet/dry amount for the vocoder, to where it adds some instability to the notes, but not enough to make it unmusical.

Thank you for the compliments, but I'm not sure if my submission is the most creative, there are a lot of innovative submissions in this jam (yours included) so the competition is pretty stiff.

I'm glad you like the artwork, Roshanay only had enough time for a quick sketch, I'll send him your regards.

Thanks for the reply, I have to try this it seems so fun to play with ! And I maintain I find this idea highly creative, as is the result ;)

Intro jumpscared me LOL. These sfx are so cool. Love the more pleasant chords and how they contrast with the sound design. Gives this unique eerie feel. Great work!

Haha maybe I should have reduced the volume of the door, might have went from 0-100 too quickly. Thank you for listening!

The initial door opening and mechanical ticking effects are really cool! The idea of an enormous wind-powered instrument is really fun to think about. The execution is really well-done here! The detuned parts, the perfectly placed mechanical sounds, and the balance of all the sounds make this feel like an authentic location and instrument. On top of that, the music composed is well-made and feels authentic to an ancient/lost civilization. My favorite part is the bells that come in just before the 2-minute mark that proceed until the end. This is a really creative track and I wish that there could have been more - but I’m sure glad we got this one! Thank you for sharing your music!
