Weird wave of updates?

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but a bunch of games I have in my library suddenly had an update available, except nothing changed? The itch page itself shows there's an update (for some 3 days ago, for others 2 days ago) but it seems to be the same game, same version, etc., and there's no announcement from the devs on the ones I've checked.

I was assuming there was a security compromise of some sort, but for that there should also be something more included with the updates that would be malicious, and I couldn't find any such file.

However I also couldn't find anyone else mentioning this. Does anyone know what happened? For example, Sort The Court seems to have this "update" as well from 3 days ago, but with no actual update to the content, so I'm relatively worried and would like some sort of clarification on what happened.

Hey! I'm no expert and what I say definitely isn't 100% confirmed, but you're likely just seeing a platform quirk rather than a security breach. This "phantom update" wave happens quite a bit on itch.io, usually because the platform flags a whole project as "updated" whenever a developer makes a minor change to the page itself like editing the text description, updating tags, adding new screenshots, or tweaking pricing settings even if the actual game files haven't been touched at all. It can also happen if itch.io rolls out a backend server migration or mass updates regional compliance filters that touch a huge batch of game pages at once, which triggers a false notification in everyone's library feed. Unless the devs actually post a new devlog announcing a content patch, it's almost certainly just a visual metada.

Given that there was no change from developers across the games observed, it must be something on itch.io's backend.

Read that again.

whenever a developer makes a minor change to the page itself like editing the text description, updating tags, adding new screenshots

The update date of a page is the update date of a page.

Is this about the Itch app? That would be front end. Propagating or even downloading phantom updates, while nothing was there to be downloaded, seem like a bug.

Yes, I can read, there was no change *even in the pages*. A bunch of games just started showing an update, both in app and in the "More information" dropdown under the Updated part.

There was no new content to the games, and there was nothing added nor changed in the pages, no screenshots added, removed nor changed, etc.

Hence why I concluded it was itch's backend. So yeah, probably a bug.

there was nothing added nor changed in the pages, no screenshots added, removed nor changed, etc.

I cannot categorically rule that out. But even a single space added to the text and the developer hitting the save changes button would update that time stamp. Probably hitting the save changes button and no changes at all would do that.

My question was, if this is about the Itch app. If the Itch app presented you games as new, even though the content did not change. Because on the website this is usually not so. The games are sorted by publishing date or most recent staff aproved devlog. Changing the page's update date and even changing the files would not normally trigger that on the website.

So I would consider the app showing you games as updated, even though the files did not change, as a bug. No matter if the publish date on the back end was buggy or not. That could of course still be a problem, but even so, it should not have shown those games as updated without files being changed.

Is it possible that the developer has changed something on the game’s page (description, tags, images, etc.) and the platform is recognising it as an update?

In any case, to be sure, it would be best to ask the developers of the games you’re referring to directly. 🤷

at time of writing, every game ive looked at has their last update logged as 11 days ago or less. every project, every game. even things that the devs stated years ago they were done working on I have not seen any that have a "last updated" note reading more then 11 days ago.

You must be looking at different games than I am, because I just checked a bunch of random games from my library and none of them were updated in the last 11 days.

no clue. at this rate im willing to accept the idea im just going insane.

Have you checked using a different browser? I guess it’s possible you’re caught on a glitch with your cache, making all days show as the same time.

pc, phone, ps4, all of it ya

Really, really weird.

What's that read to you, as update date? That's the only game right now on the first page of /games that has an update date of more than 12 days.

Something seems to have happened 12 days ago. And most of the top popular games have updated 12 days ago or shortly after.

But not all games did that.

https://thejaspel.itch.io/backpack-hero is updated 2024

https://hempuli.itch.io/baba is updated 12 days ago, like the rest.

So either Itch did something that possibly accidentally changed the time stamp or something prompted a lot of devs to make minor changes or update their pages around 12 days ago. I did not find games that updated 13+ days ago on the first page or when skimming other pgaes. But I did find other popular games, updated longer ago
