How does your game meet GBJam's theme
In the game you have to collect coins (gold) from an old Japanese castle. There's some lore about how the owner hoarded wealth which attracted cursed spirits which you have to fight.

Fun game! I appreciated the controls and that there is feedback/knockback when you hit enemies. The palette is very unique as well and feels whimsical, and the sword slashes on-screen are cool (I like that there's even a combo!)

Besides the difficulty in progression I have some other feedback on difficulty:

The camera moves in a way that doesn't let you see what's coming up ahead, it would be helpful for the camera to pull forward to see upcoming enemies.

Also the projectile enemies aggro on you while off-screen, which leads to a lot of unavoidable (for me anyways) damage.

That all aside, it feels like the elements of the game were put together with care. Great job!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Now that the jam is over, I have reduced the projectile enemy range and stopped the camera dragging behind the player too. I also increased starting health so the game should be a little easier now.

What a fun art style! It was a bit hard for my taste, even with an attack upgrade, but I like what you've done!

Developer

Thanks! That's what happens when I only playtest the game after the deadline. I have already rebalanced the health and damage for the post-jam version.

This is a nice roguelike game. The combat felt nice, and the graphics are excellent. I do wish either enemies dealt less damage at the start or that leaving the castle safely was easier, as I never was able to leave without dying. Good job.

Developer

Thank you! I do agree it's a little too hard to start with, I'm probably going to triple the starting health but increase some enemy damage to compensate too. I wanted a ramp up in progress as you get upgrades but that's no good if you can't even leave the castle with your money!

So cute! You did a great job capturing the feeling of being a little kid lost in a new big place. My one critique is that the camera smoothing made it a bit hard to see what was in front of me. But I had fun and I would love to see more of this!

I love the art design. You captured the Japanese atmosphere very well. Had a lot of fun playing it, keep going!

Developer

Thank you, I'd love to expand the game a bit with new power ups and some more to do in the hub area like side quests.

I liked the Japanese castle setting, it gives the game a nice atmosphere, and the unusual palette gives it a pretty distinctive look.

The cover art is really nice too!

Developer

Thanks! I had to be a bit creative with how to colour things since there is no black in the palette. I'm glad you liked it.

I really like the dreamy vibe and the palette used. I think I found a bug that lets you buy everything from the shop without any gold 😅

Thanks for letting me know! I'll see if I can re-create that bug.

I like the japanese aesthetics you went for. Also i like the gameplay. Great job!

Very fun game with great combat. The shooting enemies feels a bit OP so it would've been better if their shooting range was a bit lower.

Developer

Thanks! I agree actually, those guys did my head in when I was playtesting! I might decrease their range, or at least let you destroy their projectiles by attacking them.
