Sharing my party strategy for playing this game - Character Spoilers included-

I've now played this game through to the final boss.  I can see many places where people might have difficulties so I wanted to share some insight into the characters and strategy I used to get me through.  I would love to know what people are doing with their characters and how they are producing the big numbers I love to see.

My MVPs throughout the game were Laka, Elina, Vahn, Jasmine, Vera, and Ami,  I am not discounting anyone else or saying they aren't good or have no value at all. There so many characters in this game that everybody has their shining moments and ability to shine.

Laka - As the thief of the game, most of the best items at any point of the story are Boss Steals.  While her damage output is decently low throughout the game, she has a few spikes with some good dagger weapons, and her status effects can really change the tide of battle.  With her insane speed she always went first for me in battle, which let her use items/utility magic immediately.  Hastaga can put your medium speed characters ahead of the enemies, and since she goes first, she can bump them up to have priority before an enemy attack and change the pace completely.  Steal first, do whatever the party needs after.  I can't stress how much steal is one of the most useful skills in the game.  Random enemies, absolutely everything, always steal.  Finding shards and gear early fixes money problems quickly.  The only time she ever came out of the party was if I knew I was fighting a mark or something that had nothing to steal.

Elina - Early to midgame her aoe healing is just hard to go without.  Some bosses throw out insane amounts of damage, and her spamming her highest cure on the party can just make you ignore most things and keep on bashing away.  She does get a few items that allow her to get some dps spells in the mid game opening her up but her damage is always low tier and she excels at magic defense and the white magic.  In the mid game for me I found other healing on character abilities so I could swap her out for a higher dps class and keep the aoe healing.

Ami - She is a little bit dependent on Laka early on to get her abilities.  While they can be dropped by enemies, its very rare at the moment, and a lot them can be stolen off enemies.  If you are the Gygas Arena ahead of your level/story, you can obtain a bunch of her incredibly strong abilities earlier in the story and she becomes capable of carrying the party.  She gets one of the best toolkits out of any character with her range of elemental aoe abilities and the ability to heal/buff the party as well.   The only thing bad about Ami is you only get 4 slots in your party and she was a 5th place member for me at the end.

Jasmine - Who doesn't love a good monk with anger issues?  I spent A good deal investing in her with the nethercite and leveling to raise her vigor as much as possible.  The item that breaks her is the sniper scope.  By making her attacks unmissable, her Pummel becomes an auto 5 hit bash scaling on her vigor, which can then crit as well.  I did not built into crit but just built straight into vigor. She is an absolute glass cannon that was the first character to break into new damage heights for me and took the crown of hardest hitter for most of my game.  She did not start this way and had to have the right investments.  You can do the moogle hunt 50 times to purchase the combat sash for her which gives +80 vigor, and at the Dojo you can purchase a Juzu that will double her vigor.  Behemoth Mask +75.  Sniper Scope and +Vigor% accessories.  End of game she has about 1500 for me, does 4k damage per pummel and can crit 10-11k on each hit. (normal armor enemies)

Vera - If this game had crowns, I think I'd call Vera the Queen.  While she doesn't really get her abilities until the mid to late game, theres a reason for that. Most of her skills are just absurdly broken.  She single-handedly handled -most- random encounters in my mid to late playthrough, as she was consistently the highest aoe damage out of any character I had.  Earlier on she doesn't have many options to rotate around to for abilities, but she still hits like truck.  Once she gets her Ifrit/Ramuh, she becomes random encounters worst nightmares.  Push harder in world one and you can get Leviathan whos on another level, and Bahamut is exactly what you expect him to be.  She works great with MP reduction cost and really need a large MP pool to not have to chug potions constantly.  fortunately ethers are in near infinite supply in this game, so you can just pay to win and offset her weakness by chugging a potion every few battles while she just makes everyone else watch.  Ultimately, she can AOE Haste, AOE Heal with 2 different summons, Do Fire/Ice/Thunder/Holy/Water/Non-elemental Damage in aoe form and scales super hard off her magic stat.  Odin can beat alot of the Gygas Arena battles before your party is technically capable of them.  Whatever the problem is, Vera has the element or solution to it generally.

Vahn - Oh boy, He's the star of the show for a reason. This guy can do it all.  He gets the main character treatment and wears the crown for a reason.  Consistently one of the highest damage Non MP based Jump early on is just great damage and awesome evasion. Leaves your party hanging out to dry but oh hell its almost always worth it.  Later on he gain's Reis's Wind, which is one of the best healing spells in the entire game.  Its always Half or more of the partys maximum HP values throughout the game, and its only 16 MP so with a few miracle fruits Vahn can just cast for days.  This was the reason I didn't need Elina anymore, and Vahn was able to cover that role easily with the ability while dishing out insane damage every other turn.  He consistently gets high damage lances throughout the game. Gets heavy armor with shield, and is generally tanky/strong against most anything.  At my end game hes my single hardest character consistently, 2nd fastest character to Laka, and Heals for 4k AOE on the party if not more.  His two best skills are Holy Based and Physical Based, so he always has one or the other as an answer to maintain his high damage.

Shout out to------ Coral!  While she is not the best in combat, she has some very useful moments when she can prevent your party from taking debuffs....Or the enemy from getting theirs.  Her Pharmacology ability works out of combat regardless of if she is in your top 4, so you can use ethers/potions out of combat with the triple effectiveness.  Considering how plentiful items are in the game, this became the most efficient way for me to just run and gun.  Mega-potions/Hyper ethers out of combat were my portable tents, so I could just go all out offense, take a few hits, pop some potions and keep on moving.

Throughout the game I rotated people in and out to test them, but once I found my squad I pretty much stuck with them the whole time.  Seigfried and Darius had some good power spike times with weapons and abilities that were useful.  Sometimes I had to bring someone like them just to tank hits and not have a super low hp/squishy party.  Oalston had a really good spike when he got his lvl 2/3 spells.  He could tap weakness's and clear entire fields, but when I had conflicting weakness enemies on the field, Vera just out-performed with Unicorn/Leviathan/Odin.  My end game Oalston is up to almost 2k magic, so I will have to go test him a little bit.

I do love how many characters there are in this game, with the way the story flows, it spikes very much at times with difficulty so I had a hard time rotating and figuring out builds/abilities because I was already comfortable with my crew and setup.   If you took the time to reach I hope you enjoyed and maybe learned something.  Happy to help out the community in anyway I can. I've enjoyed this game greatly so far and am glad for all the efforts the creator put into making it.

Thanks for sharing your setup. I just wanted to add that Oalston is indispensable for bosses as well as for random mobs once he has learned Meteo and Ultima. You can choose to teach Oalston one of these spells by completing a certain side quest, and my guess is that Oalston learns the other one when reaching level 99. I gave him Meteo after completing the side quest, and then he learned Ultima when reaching level 99, but I don't know if it works the other way around.

Meteo is a 5-hit Fire elemental spell against a single target, and if a max-magic (2000) Oalston is up against a boss without any Fire resistance, he can easily inflict 50000+ damage each turn. Ultima hits all enemies with non-elemental damage, which easily adds up to 20000+ damage when used by a max-magic (2000) Oalston, who is already a valuable asset against random mobs even before learning Ultima (once he learns Apocalpyse, which isn't that much weaker, but an Earth-elemental skill, which makes it useless against certain enemies). I can't imagine traveling the game's world without these two spells ever again.

After posting this I went back and tested Oalson with Flare. It was doing 22-25k damage with max magic.  Apocalypse was about 22k consistently.  The issue I had with the mages is that there were some fights they just couldn't survive the damage that was going out at them.  I am always going to build damage first, so I wasn't really willing to sacrifice the magic gains on nethercite for some HP for him.  Now in  hindsight, there are some opportunities to steal/farm for stat items/money sink stuff in order to purchase some shards and things to raise HP up sooner in the game.  His damage output might some of the highest in the game.   I could have swapped Jasmine for him in my playthrough as she was my raw dps in my team, but oh boy he did carry hard for me in the pyramid by just blowing everything up non-chalantly.  Thanks for sharing the info on him I appreciate it!

And here I am wondering how any of you made it through the desert dungeon where you have to switch teams. The  bug has yet to be fixed.

I feel ya bro. Eager to get back into it, stuck in the same situation.

what specifically is the pyramid bug? Does the game crash/free!e do you only have fewer party members. Not too familiar with that one

When the game tells you to complete Esto Yensa (the pyramid) and Osteinchyl in any order, if you complete Osteinchyl first and then visit Esto Yensa, an unknown game-breaking bug will prevent you from switching parties there (party-switching is necessary to travel through the dungeon).

I'm not sure if this is it or not, but I went back, and if I switched parties while NOT on a save marker, I was able to switch parties and complete the pyramid.

If it wasn't "being on the save marker and switching parties" that was causing it, then it has to do with party composition when you split up the teams.  I forget the split when I was getting the crash, but the split when I didn't get the crash was:

Team 1: Vahn, Oalston, Siegfried, Nombasu

Team 2: Vera, Elina, Darius, Ami

No change in version - originally experienced the crash on 1.12, and didn't get the crash on 1.12 and got through the level, and now onto the merged world.

where do you find bahamut and odin summon?

Odin is at Horsemen's Rest.  Bahamut will be on the world map after a certain point in the story.  Because I was pretty overpowered at the time, i was able to take him out earlier than most and then used him to carry throughout the rest of the game.

(1 edit)

My final setup for the end boss was: Vahn, Oalson, Jasmine and redmage. Vahn and jas were doing 25-30k dmg per turn while Oalson about 50k. Beef up Oalson with tabs and you'll be fine.

Super solid squad.  Oalson for me was too squishy for most fights which was kept him out of my main squad.  I did get to revisit him after I got his magic stat and yeah he was doing 25k easily.  Very strong character and I'd probably mess around with him more in another playthrough.

If you haven’t tried Nobumasa yet, you are seriously missing out. He has completely earned a permanent spot in my main party over Vahn. Here is a breakdown of why his kit is so ridiculously good if you build him right:

  • Insane Burst Damage: His self-buff turns him into a complete powerhouse, allowing him to hit like an absolute truck for 4 full rounds.
  • Top-Tier Sustain: He isn't just about raw damage; his healing ability is incredibly reliable, easily ticking for around 4,000 HP per round to keep the party healthy.
  • The 3x Attack Combo: If you equip the Genji Glove on him, he attacks 3 times per round.
  • The Crit Build Payoff: By stacking a critical hit build (getting him to about 35% crit), those three attacks trigger crits constantly. Early on the 3rd map, he is already bursting down enemies for a massive 30k damage per round!

My current lineup is Nobumasa, Jasmine, Laka, and Ami in the main party, with Vera in 5th and Vahn pushed back to 6th. It’s an incredibly fun way to play the game.

Quick question for those using Jasmine:
Since she is the definition of a glass cannon, I’ve been playing it safe and equipping her with the Hero Ring just to boost her survivability. However, I'm tempted to lean into her high damage. Do you guys think switching her over to the Sniper Scope is a better move, or is she just too fragile without the defensive stats?

Nobu is a rockstar. I gave him too many levels with +spirit nethercite because I thought that would be better, so he lags behind for me, but you are 100% on.

As for Jasmin, Combat Sash and Prowess Band take care of hit, so you can use that third slot for Hero ring or whatever.  You can use the head and body to get more Def/Spirit and evasion. She still gets wrecked on heavy magic bosses, but you get the Minerva Bustier, or put the right resistance ring and she's good.

Nobumasa has become absolutely insane in my run. Right now he’s sitting at 1100 ATK and 450+ SPR while using the katana that cuts Luck by 50% (painful, but worth it). Once he casts his self‑boost, every single stat jumps by a huge margin, and he basically turns into a hybrid monster—top‑tier burst damage and a reliable emergency healer. (heals a lot more than vahn)

With my current crit build (~30% crit, though it feels higher), he usually crits 2 out of 3 hits thanks to the Genji Glove giving him triple attacks. His crits land in the 18k–20k range, and the consistency is wild. He’s easily one of the best burst characters in the game and doubles as a backup healer when things get messy. He usually goes first too. (fastest char in the game)

I’m trying to refine Jasmine’s setup too. Does anyone know where the Prowess Band drops and what stats it gives? I was hoping she’d eventually get an upgraded version of the Combat Sash—something like a “Master’s Sash"—especially since she doesn’t get any ancient‑type weapons at all.

My current Jasmine build:

  • Behemoth Mask (the Spirit penalty hurts… badly)
  • Minerva Bustier
  • Power Sash
  • Bone Belt (+35% STR)
  • Hero Ring (+15 to all stats)

This puts her at 1100 ATK, ~260 DEF, and 170+ SPR.

Since she’s basically the female Sabin of the game, I’m wondering: Do you guys also invest in her magic stats? Her arts scale off both ATK and MAG, right? Or whichever stat is higher?

If you build Nobumasa and Jasmine like that and there is also good old Oalstan, Vahn will have no place left in the party. lol

In my last run, I always wonder when Vahn will catch up with Jasmine/Sieg and boom, an OP spear come maxing his Vigor.
Imagine if Nobu and Jasmine were at 2000 vigor as well.

*My apologies for my last deleted post. I forget to go to the water shrine before looking for Chocobo.

For Ami, I’m using the Coliseum reward staff, which gives 1000+ Magic boost. With it, her Maelstrom hits for around 20k damage, while that blue scythe-like spell can hit for 30k+ if both strikes connect—though landing both hits consistently is pretty unlikely. Thinking of switching her for Vera, since Nobu is my backup healer as well. Are you using the same staff for your blackmage build too?

(1 edit)

I put that staff on my black mage with his meteor.
I used Ami as a boss stealer with mimic staff and HP buffer with big guard.
I noticed that big guard can be used to buff max HP multiple times. So, I used repeated big guard trick to bump the team hp to 9000+ to fight those Elite marks and any boss that I was under-leveled. At least she's a more useful Thief than Laka in any boss fight.
I think I don't have that blue scythe-like spell you mentioned. :/

For Nobumasa, thanks to you, I'll try Nobumasa's Genji glove build and Jasmine's Sniper sight this time. Vahn can sit around doing nothing.
I use Nobumasa as a healer all the time. lol my bad. Well, the spell is cheap and heal a lot! ...until it was not enough later. At the end, I replace him with the Red mage.

For Jasmine, I loved her. But her pummel was unreliable at times (I didn't think about the Sniper sight). She was replaced by Sieg's Flurry. Then, Sieg was replaced by Vahn after I got his cheat spear and the urge to use our protagonist a bit at the end. lol

Jasmine’s final setup has been such a joy to use. I’m running:

  • Behemoth Headpiece
  • Nirvana Bustier (I love the elemental nullification, especially since her Spirit isn’t great)
  • War Monk Juzu (double Vigor is amazing on her)
  • Power Sash
  • Relic Band (from the Relic NPC in camp)

With this build, she’s sitting at 31.5% crit and 1150+ Vigor, and she just goes off. Her Pummel hits crit 3 out of 5 times, and each crit lands for around 9k. She never misses, she never slows down — she just tears through everything with style. Honestly, she’s become one of the most fun characters to use.

Nobu continues to impress in every fight. His healing scales beautifully with high Spirit, and those endgame ninja swords give him a ton of it.

  • Without his self‑buff, he heals for 3500–4000+ consistently.
  • With the buff active (lasts 4 rounds), his heals jump to 6000+, and his crits land around 18k per hit, he crits 2 out of 3 a lot of the times....

He’s such a satisfying hybrid—massive burst damage when you need it and clutch emergency healing when things get rough. He’s become one of my favorite endgame characters.

How do you get meteo? I rarely play the blm so never bother to look for it.

(1 edit)

I think we need to get an ancient spell book in the late game. I cannot remember that book's name.
Take that book to an ancient library. That one house with 2 bridges close by.

The only one guy inside will ask you to choose only one spell between Meteo and Ultima for Oalston.

Meteo is a single target fire spell. With 2,000 Magic, it constantly deals 50k-60k to any bosses. Imagine hitting one weak to fire. lol

Ultima is an AoE non-elemental spell.

Thank you for the info! by any chance have you found all memoir pages requested by the librarian npc from branch? I missing 3 and im going crazy trying to find them...

In my last save file, I got 19 before beating the game. :/ And I deleted that save file during the confusion of the gysahl green. lol

In my current game, I got 6 of them at the Nideen village where Leonardo asks us to retrieve Pandemonium from Gilgamesh.

Going forward, I will take note of where I found each one of them. It won't be quick as my job is quite demanding these days. ^^"

It's Edea's Tome. The book you need for Meteo.

I had her on Ixion pretty much the whole time and I think the extra magic just isn't worth it, especially since it combines the 2 stats. Just jack vigor. I used Yojimbo almost exclusively on the martials level-up.

Prowess Band is from Dogna, the Accessory vendor in your camp. You recruit him in the Infinitarium when you beat the boss there.

(+1)

So far the best, early, high damage build I've found, is Vera with Shishpar for her weapon, and a Gauntlet and Genji Glove as accessories.  Hits twice for 1300+, try to add in some crit rate cause she can do 4000+.  Available as soon as you can reach Neirbrook.
