How does your game meet GBJam's theme
The game takes place in a lost dungeon. The dungeon contains lots of "Old Gold" to collect. The golden curse drives all residents of the dungeon to a gold fever madness and seems to infect those who perish there. The doors themselves require a payment of old gold only dropped by residents to progress further in the dungeon.
In this game you have to defeat your enemies, after they die, they would turn into Old Gold. But be wary, if you also die in this dungeon, or waste a lot of time in it, it can be your fate as well!

Great little gameplay loop! Nothing too complicated to pick up and the upgrade system is great. Prices up pretty quickly but I guess you can't have us getting too strong... Great ending!

I loved the gameplay loop here! Very rouge light and addicting as well! the graphics were great especially for the Gameboy feel! The soundtrack was  a bit too modern for me to get that Gameboy feel, with that said I got a very Donkey Kong Country vibe that was pleasant to play to! Very good idea and execution overall though! The only bug I encountered was I broke a pot covered by walls and after I broke it I couldn't move to gain a coin(I assume the collision was still being detected)! Overall great work! Good job!

Thanks for the info!

good job! The music is a little non gameboy esc but not bad at all. It could also use some sfx. Otherwise I enjoyed it and hope to see if there will be anymore levels. The pixel art and style is very much like a gameboy game. Except the little guy I found in the secret room :).

Developer

(we don't talk about the little guy...) 😶‍🌫️

Great job! I really liked the tutorial screens in the beginning! I did find it confusing that i hit select to choose an upgrade rather  than 'A' so I wasn't upgrading for a bit when I thought I was. Just a small thing though.

I liked the upgrade system. Every purchase makes you feel stronger, which motivated the mining and fighting loop.

The art has a great original Game Boy look too.

Tough little dungeon crawl, but fun!

Mining! Slaying! Struggling as I may, but it was all for naught. I, in the end, became what I hungered for.

A good ol dungeon crawl with some pretty neat music! the only thing missing was the sound effects and it'd be golden!

Nicely said!

Great game! Love how each upgrade immediately shows that you became better! Also i can see it being on the original gameboy, great job!

The color palette really reminds me of playing on an original gameboy DMG model, I enjoyed the game loop and upgrade system.

The sound effects didn't quite sound gameboy-like, the graphics certainly looked the part (in a good way) overall this was really fun.

I just wish it was an actual gameboy ROM so I could keep it saved on my flash cart :)

The colour palette and the 16bit was really a really challenging constrain. Makes it so you have to really  focus on the key details to make the characters or tiles looks like what they should look like with minimum detail. Glad you had fun playing our teams game!

Yo I love the upgrade system, honestly great game overall! sfx would be nice but barely felt that they were missing. One thing that wasnt clear is that if in the 3rd level you were meant to just time out and die like all the other enemies on screen or if there was anything else, but I think the becoming gold death animation + the "Thanks for Playing" works (unless there is more then i didnt know haha)

Sweet game, I found it a little difficult also its missing some much needed sound effects. I found the controls a little tricky to but i'm probably too slow. Well done on the art!

Developer

Yeah, I was even thinking about restricting diagonal movement but it would be wayyy too hard

Thanks I really enjoyed working on the art!

I really like this one.  It's tough, but the power-ups help.  Buying power-ups seems a little unintuitive. (I'd have thought it'd be A to buy the power-up and B to exit, rather than Enter and A)

The music sort of sounds like a 2000s Flash game more than a Gameboy game (though I know that sounding exactly like a Gameboy game was not required, but it just had the wrong vibe for the setting), and there were no sound effects.

Also, last issue was odd hitbox on the player's attack; the animation lasted longer than the actual effect.  The enemies could walk through it after the first couple of frames, even though the visual was still on screen.

Was the last room (at least, I think it was the last room) meant to be meta-commentary? If so, very clever.

Overall, good game.  I can't wait to see how it develops.

Developer

Thanks! I almost didn't make it with the last room. I finished it two hours before deadline :o

Agreed on the buying power-ups being unintutive

Nice gameplay, clean game design.

I would have preferred music closer to the Game Boy sound, along with some SFX.

Developer

Thanks! (I did the levels)
