Skeleton sprites are brilliant, and the soundtrack suits it perfectly

This is quite nice overall, I just think the enemies can mob you way too much on your way to the boots + their projectiles lingering after their death/no projectile throw telegraph is pretty punishing at that resolution and movement speed. Hitbox on the projectiles could also be a little smaller.

I quite like the presentation and the nods to Zelda. The plot is actually quite quirky, and the theme interpretation is also excellent here - all supported by the game mechanics, instead of fighting them. Quite charming!

Great job!

I loved your take on 'old gold', it was fun to play. I felt it was a little unfair when the enemies could still attack you even when they were not on frame, I died a few times because of that, but not that big of an issue once I realized you could grab hearts from burning boxes/barrels.

Thanks! yeah will try to tweak skeleton attacks in future!

Very fun game. I like the inspired take on the old gold theming. The sprite work, especially for the skeletons is delightful and everything had a very gameboy feel to it! Surprisingly very difficult but not in a bad way.

Developer

Thank you, very kind! Glad it felt challenging but not too unfair :)

I finished something old, something gold and had a good time with it, even though the gameplay is rather limited.

The things that shined most for me were the visuals and sounds.

Sadlilbirb chose a good palette and made good use of it too, keeping the sprites simple and clear. The sounds were also minimal but I feel like it captured the gameboy feel very well! In general, this game feels like a true gameboy game and it adheres to all the limitations of the Jam, as well as does a good job in portraying the second theme.

The game itself is rather short and the fighting at times feels a little clunky. Like I said though, I still had fun playing this game and would love to see where, if anywhere, it goes in the future! The UI was really nice though. I like that you didn't need bullets for the gun but you did have to wait for the reload. It made combat feel a little more interactive. The fact that skeletons blow up when you beat them with the hookhand was funny but felt hard to avoid sometimes.

All in all, good experience and a solid base that is commendable for spending only ten days on it. Well done!

Thank you very much for the detailed review, glad you liked the music and sound! I think the death explosions are perhaps a little too fast/untelegraphed yeah, will tweak those if I manage a post-jam update!

Hey you added the other idle animations. Definitely makes it easier to position myself and attack, but these skeletons death explosions are pretty punishing. There were times I went from full HP to dead in under a second, and I think invincibility frames could help the sense of fairness.

You did a great job with the music, especially for your first go at it. Sprites and UI have a nice 90s aesthetic, and for tiles the staggered planks and the grills are well done in how they break up the sense of repetition. Overall, a vibe.

Thank you very much! I do think the explosions could be a bit slower or telegraphed, and yeah i considered invincibility frames but just didn’t get time to try to figure out how they work!

I like this. I feel like enemies attacking you from off screen is a little unfair, especially the screen with mr bones as it is such a small area. Soundtrack was nice and it definitely feels like a gameboy game

Developer

Thank you kindly! Yeah I did try to mess around with the aggro range of the skeletons to make it a little fairer, but couldn’t crack how to get them to only attack if you could also see them so we ended with offscreen bones flying at you!
