How does your game meet GBJam's theme
churro is a real cat. one of our team found him in China, brought him home, and has treasured him ever since, so he's literally their old gold. the coins in the game stick around too, so gold from wave 2 is still lying there when you eventually get a vacuum, and anything you hoard ultimately becomes part of your score.

the art alone is amazing i really enjoyed playing this

Such a nice warming story for the theme interpretation!

I liked playing the game until wave9 and than I lost. Maybe I was too reckless (or didn't like that the hearts spawned away, when they are in a bunch of enemies).

I liked all the enemies and the elites where very good programmed with unique attack patterns. Maybe the game was a bit hard (could be skill issues). I also didn't see much good with the ghost fish cause it never hit anything it was always on a place where no enemies where when I flipped.

I loved the art and all the sounds and music really charming and cute.

Before playing I looked at the game's page and I liked the page design having all I need to know there. After playing for a few minutes, I found the few types of enemies didn't have me unforce by memorizing attack patterns—and I liked the attack pattern of the elites being an expansion of the original. Also I liked how I can still differentiate the enemy sprites when clustered together.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I'm glad you made an endless mode too- I was sad when the original mode ended but Miles scratched the itch. I would buy this for my gameboy, easy.

Ahh It made me want to play vampire survivor again, nooooooo....
Anyway very cute and very well made, also kudos for the itchio page, it's very pretty!

As someone who put tons hours into Vampire Survivors, I dig that you made a bite-sized version that would meet with a Game Boy requirements in terms of gameplay and visuals. The game's length already has replay potential for different power-ups and that "one more try" feeling when you lose (which is easy to do if you're reckless), and the enemies are unique with their own special traits. Almost made it to the end and beat the final boss but this was still cute.

Great job making this. The only thing I would add is if there were more weapons and you could only hold three at a time. This would add a bit more attack variety, but as is, the game is fine and challenging enough with more fish. Would've been 11/10 if I pet Churro, though.

If you like, you could try out my game about a forgetful goldfish.

First time playing this kind of a game, what is this genre called?  Soooo satisfying gameplay and the sound effects add to it so much.  The color palette choice is perfect, its soft and vibrant.  Plus for the cute cat :3 Good job!!

Most people would call it a “Survivor-like” based on the popularity of a similar game called Vampire Survivors, but I think my design bias has a lot of Action RPG DNA too. I’m happy to hear the SFX were good too - we actually produced just over 50 custom SFX, the majority within the Furnace GB tracker for authenticity, it was a significant portion of the work considering how “invisible” it is to most players.

Catfish survivor :) Nice game, very addictive, nice ideas. I've seen for 80 coins second fish ability, but when i finally able to purchase it - it never showed again :( Great job!

I’m not a fan of Vampire Survivors but this game is so polished and well made I couldn’t stop playing! Terrific!

I made a concerted effort to make each enemy unique and challenging in its own way (and moreso in combination with one another), and tried to make sure combat felt more engaging with active abilities and a skill-based attack system to avoid things being too passive. Glad to hear it worked out as well as it did!

I like the idea of fighting off bees as presumably the game designer's cat.

Listen, the theme was gold, this little screaming dork makes my day into gold.

Great job on the gameplay! I also love the graphics, specially like the box art made hehe. I like the feedback when getting hit and the tells on the direction of enemies attacks, I think that was well thought out! Sadly couldn't get as far despite multiple rounds since I'm pretty bad at these games haha. We had a dog named Churro too (who's sadly passed on) so I'm glad that Churro at least survived here. Thank you for making this game :)

Loved the graphics and the intro screen with the cat and the bees. I am a bit tired of vampire survivors xD but I still loved this one. Having a cat as main character helps a lot in loving it more. Great entry!

Interesting seeing a Vampire Survivors type game in a Gameboy format. I enjoyed the focus on positioning and the ability to reverse the rotation of your attack works really well, good job!

Having also submitted a cat game, I really appreciate the approach you took to rendering our feline friends in 8-bit form. It reads really clearly as a cat, and the way you communicated the fur pattern and little paws was really smart. Believe me when I say it took a lot of tinkering to get my cat down as small as I possibly could.

The whole vibe felt really chill, and I think a lot of that came from the graceful run animation. I mean, you’re also whacking bumblebees with a magic fish, which is cute in and of itself, but the movement just felt really light and graceful.

What can I say? I love cats. And heck I love this game! Great job!

Thank you so much! Thats really wonderful to hear! Game jams are all about making a thing, then making the thing good. To be honest there were a few stages of the animation for Churro because it wasn’t a perfect thing the first try. Here’s an early sprite sheet workspace I had before I was committed to the black border and pushed for churros fur pattern. Honestly at first I was only with him appearing solid orange if it read better as a cat. ❤️ Thanks again for the kind words c:

Thank you for sharing this! It’s great to see the earlier iterations. The work paid off  :)

Probably my favorite game I’ve played in this jam! The graphics and music are super pleasant, the gameplay is fun and well-balanced, and there’s even an endless mode! Really awesome work!

This is peak. I was so happy when I was graced with the real churro after defeating the queen. There are a lot of really nice design choices in this game. The dodge and differing attack patterns of the different enemies makes it just a little more active to play than other survivorlikes. The art is also great with a lot of personality coming from very few animation frames. No notes, this rules.

Cute! I love you, Churro. Loved the colors used and the different attacks of the enemies.
