Description
Released as part of the Impressions Composing Jam Community, "Secret Lakes" / "Ambient #4" is a conceptual ambient album inspired by the artwork of Koho Shoda.

The synth strings are a little on the harsh side. There are some plugins to soften the sound. I use ReaFIR in Reaper, some people use Soothe, but multiband compressors are like magic for reducing harsh overtones.

The bass is clean and pleasant, though.

Oceans:

I feel like I want that higher pitch sound to be wetter and farther away, like it would be floating above the scene, giving it a more spatial, lush feeling. It could also use a little softening on the overtones.  Maybe slightly quieter in the mix too.

Ponds:

I like the sudden shift. I think the reverb could use some EQing, and a larger reverb like Valhalla supermassive would really drive this effect farther. I love the vibe here.

Rivers:

Maybe a little muddy on the way some of the frequencies are coming together, but I'd need to troubleshoot your specific mix in this case.

Entity:

Describes an entity well. I think I have similar feedback on this that I do to ponds. I love the little rising and falling synths in the background.

Sacrifice:

I like the feeling on this one more.

I have redundant feedback for the last two tracks. Overall, the vibe creation and creativity was on point; I think it just needs some more precision and time in the mix to get that "its dirty but it sounds so clean" sound that would make this whole set really land.

Great work!

Damn this is cool! Moody and dark stuff.  I like all the tracks. Lots of unique textures. Oceans/Ponds are probably my favorite. Parts of Entity/Sacrifice seemed a little louder for me and I needed to turn them down a little. Also, I'm floored by your ability to produce so many well-crafted and unique sounding musical pieces in a cohesive set. I remember in a previous jam I joined you did the same thing so you probably have it down to a science but it's really cool to witness :)

I've been making music for games and whatnot for a couple years now. I find it so much more fun to do jams like this with clear themes and challenges versus more traditional music for other things. I've always found it easier to do conceptual albums than just genre specific things, especially when ambience is the setting.

Sounds really nice! Good work 😁

Thanks! It's nice to hear from you again.

Very cool set of tracks here. But I am going to be honest. They were way to loud for my taste. And they kind of felt just out there. Like nebulous. In any case, this is some really solid work here. The sounds you used really brought out some good textures and sounds. They are for sure, soundscapes! Almost like snapshots in time. Very cool concept. Great work once again.

Developer

Could you elaborate a little more with feeling these are too loud?

They're at the same intregated loudness as the rest of my work and I've never heard anyone say they're "to loud".  Like I'm at -1/-14 TP/LUFS. Which makes me think you mean loud in another sense?

Really cool selection of sound design experiments you got here. "Oceans" and "Rivers" were probably the ones more related to the theme, and in terms of song writing, "Lakes" is the one which I am taking as a reference to rate the Composition category, as the others feel more like short ambient segments which might work very well for specific settings, but which don't seem to have the intention of being developed as a full song.

Ratings:

Execution: 4

Vibe: 4

Composition: 4

Listenability: 3

Correlation to theme: 3

Your mixing is clean and consistent, and the grainy textures in the tracks complement the edit you've done for the cover art nicely. The cyber-esque direction is a bold choice, but works very well for an ambient theme.

Good stuff!

Each track is presented with its own identity, but they all add up to a cohesive collection. There is a pleasant variety of sounds and effects from track to track, which keeps me engaged in the music without my ear feeling the need to set the audio aside. Great job!

I have no specific comments on the first few tracks other than I loved all of these and they felt distinct yet united. Great submissions!

Entity: specifically the popping/clicks happening are kind of taking me out of it. Generally pretty harsh sounds in the high end overall in this one so that kind of takes it over the edge for me.

Sacrifice is the better version of entity to me, much easier on the ears generally while still being pretty spooky and distinct.

Worth: I can see the tie in from the previous track here, pretty similar sound. This is the only point at which I’d say “this sounds a lot like the last one”. I feel like the rest are distinct.

Drown: oh I’m loving these descending drones, very cool.

Great work!

Cool textures, all the tracks have its own different sound to it which I like, if we talk purely compositions this was more researched on pads sound design than actual musical composition but I like the experimental approach, the best track was Ponds for me, I appreciated the creativity used with the small reverb percs and the lush chord in addition of the quick eerie chord switching the vibe from time to time, I like the cohesion it feels like a real album and not just multiple tracks that has no association with each other, I can feel the research and sound palette you put into your craft, well done !

I like how Dark all the Soundtracks sound like, and they are very Simplistic! A lot of them sound like they are just a few Drones. Very well done on a simplistic take!

Oh man, great atmospheres you got there. The tracks feels a little bit repetitive towards the end. But they are different enough and each one serves a different purpose.
The mix is kinda busy but it's a relatively easy thing to change.
Good job.

Developer

Thank you!

Like I said in another comment (and will probably say some more, lmao)

Two of these tracks (last two I believe) were at one point a single track. I split it because I was concerned about the legnth and felt more comfortable submitting 8 tracks at 9m30s than 7 tracks at like 9:59. Cutting out a chunk of each helped me get everything mixed in a way that felt "unique" to each track and flush the run a bit.

It's a very interesting proposal. It instantly creates a solid feeling of mysterious atmosphere and sounds really well produced. It also feels like a cohesive block of music. Maybe it could use a bit more variety, I don't know, but in my opinion it's a very well done soundtrack!

Developer

Thank you!

I wanted to fit a bit more into it but didn't wanna overstuff it, I'm totally happy keeping things simple and true to my brand and style of ambience.

really good coherence between the tracks, it follows a story, but i would like to hear it all in one track, the only bad thing is that its so coherence beacuse all the tracks are really similar, i mean you can note the differences between each one but they are kinda redundant, you could have shorten it by a third and make it all one track and it would feel the same or better

its one of the best that i heard in this jam but i have to be constructive with my comment

Developer

It's funny you point this out because two of the tracks at one point were a single track but I split them because I was afraid of over working it and hitting 10 minutes. I split the track and work them down slightly and am thankful I made it just under 10 minutes with eight tracks, lmao.

And I won't say much now, but I talked to Alex about releasing it after voting ends but I will likely have a mix of the whole OST as one major ambient piece (seamless ambience between the tracks, ect)

I didn't want to do it for the Jam itself cause it would 100% push me over 10 minutes plus would have felt "unfair" to have a "jam version" and "official" versions elsewhere.

I like when I place high in these jams but I'm not going to go out of my way to do an entire pro-mix of my submission for the sake of releasing two of the same thing essentially, you know?

I appreciate your comment and am thankful for your listening!

This is cool!! Atmospheres you've created in each track are top notch, really puts me into that world. There's solid unity through the whole album, but also each track feels like it's own room I'm walking through, I think it would work really well for levels of some kind of horror exploration game. At times it feels a little too static and then abruptly ending. Fine for ambience looping, but I think you could create more interest/variation without distracting.

You should really elaborate instead of just vaguely saying "they are overdone"
