Lets talk about games

What's your favorite (indie or not) game?

What's your favorite game genre?

Is there something you would like to play, but won't bother making?

  1. Stardew Valley, pretty much all of the Lego games, and all of the Luig games on itchio
  2. Cozy Sim and Puzzle Games : )
  3. I'd love a cozy Cafe sim where instead of running a cat Cafe, you have pet slimes and other typical dungeon monsters that you have to tame

I like puzzle games too, but I don't play a lot of sim games.

- Baldur's Gate 3
- RPG ( fantasy theme )
- game with no combat or action, focused on exploring a location and uncovering its secrets to piece together the story of a fallen civilization.

Games about story is good to play, but they take a lot of time to make. I once tried making a game about a wizard exploring his mind to find secrets about his past, but gave up after making about 3 locations.

Three locations could be the whole game, not the abandoned tutorial :) A wizard's mind doesn't need 40 rooms; it needs one memory that hits differently on the way back.

I'd try one object that changes meaning across those three rooms: first a strange key, then a clue to who owned it, then the choice to keep or return it. Reuse the rooms after that reveal instead of building more.

That's the small-story problem behind P.S.Me, our personalized gift-game project: the person matters more than the size of the map. Your wizard premise sounds like it could work as a tiny finished story.

I didn't make a proper engine before I started. It would take hours just to add something new...

Ah, the wizard wasn't trapped in his memories. He was trapped in the codebase :)

I'd start with one reusable interaction rather than a whole new engine: an object has a name, one line of text, and a flag it sets. Then the same object can show a different line once that flag is set. Adding the next memory becomes writing a few lines instead of wiring another special case.

What were you building it in?

JS

Then I'd keep the three rooms as plain JS data and have one function render whichever room you're in. Each object can carry its text and an optional flag name; keep the flags in one state object. That won't build the whole engine for you, but it keeps the next memory from needing its own special-case code. Small enough to try on one room before rewriting anything.

It's too hard for me to pick favourite. But I'll start with the one that never gets old for me which is Choice-Driven Visual Novels. I don't know the "official types" of games so I'll just give you examples. Games like Criminal Case or Carmen San Diego that has mini games but add to the story. Games like Farmville, I believe it's called Farm/City Management 😅 I also love Vector, Shadow Fight 2, and Trials Frontier (I don't like their newer editions though😅). I didn't even start on PlayStation games because that'd be endless 😂. And I'd definitely bother make any/all these types of games, no matter how hard and long it might be as long as I do it with my friend. 🤩

What about yours? 👀

Legend of Zelda series was the first 3d game I played, and the best. I also found something very good called Narrow One on itch. Otherwise, I like puzzle games.

My favorite genres are: 2D run 'n' guns, turn based RPGs and tactics, metroidvanias and puzzle games.

When it comes to making any of them, I have made all of those except for turn based RPGs and tactics.

You made a lot of games.

(+1)

Anything with a good story/story centered. But more or less my personal tier list is something like this.

1) FPS and TPS. Like CoD, Max Payne, Half Life, GTA, so on... (I also include horrors like RE and SH)

2) RPGs: The Witcher, Fallout 3 and after, Cyberpunk 2077, so on...

3) VN's and Graphics adventures. Like  The longest journey (trilogy), The wolf among us and Telltale's The walking dead

4) Walking Sims  not much, but i found some I liked like 'A second before us', 'What remains of Edith Finch' and 'The vanishing of Ethan carter'

Some of the indie games I like are from Warlines Studios, Revevoodoo ,and there is also the Cursed trilogy there are more games ad makers of course but i don't want to make a wall. :-)

That's a lot of genres! My favorites are puzzle or combat, and I like them in clean/almost minimalism style.

Tough question. There are many obvious masterpieces or games that have impressed. Like Portal or Baba Is You. Some games would stand out, simply because you can play them again and again. But does that make them the favorite game?

So I would go with Eternal Darkness.

I have no favorite genre. I tend to like turn based a bit more than action games, but I do play action games too. Including things like Dark Souls.

I never played Enternal Darkness, but the story in the link looks good! I don't like turn based games much, just easy action games.

You can watch a playthrough of the game on yt.

I actually do not like the classical turn based rpg mechanics as seen in all those rpg maker games. I prefer mechanics like in Darkest Dungeon or Monster Train. You still have time to think, but it is not a chore to control the commands.

What's your favorite (indie or not) game?

- Not indie: Amnesia

 - Indie: Akash Path of the five

What's your favorite game genre?

 - Visual novel with romance/horror or fantasy.

 - Rpg too

Is there something you would like to play, but won't bother making?

 - I like playing open-world games like Skyrim, but I don't have what it takes to make a game like that... Neither the time nor the coding knowledge D:

(1 edit) (+1)

Very well! I think that open world games are good too.

I really like this one game called Super 10 Pin. It was basically a what-if scenario if Acclaim, and the devs that made the old Turok games (Iguana Entertainment), made a bowling videogame for N64. Everything from the font, the twist on bowling, and the music feels ripped right out of an old N64 game by Acclaim. I love it. I enjoy bowling videogames, especially ones that make playful twists on the formula. Bowling Hills and Impossibowl are two others that are pretty fun twists on the normal Bowling formula. I think they're all worth a play.

I'll take a look.

I play a lot of games, but my top 3 games I always come back to  are Rimworld, Starsector and Factorio.

It's really hard to pick a favourite but I have been really interested in 2d  games that have some kind of cartoony style recently.
