Very cool concept. I think it needs some work on the execution, but I can hear what you're going for and I really want to hear more of it, but with more refinement and polish.
This goes for the composition and mix, like some of the sounds are still a little harsh and not mixed super spatially. I.e. you really want to hear that delay between the left and right ear to simulate the position in space, IMHO. That is what makes a composition like this really stand out more.
Very cool idea and very good work. Keep working on your sound, I really like where it is heading. Foxhyode gives really good feedback if you ask for it, though he sometimes holds back during jams. I'd definitely post this in the critique your work to get some pointers, because I think a lot of the things needed to take this track to the next level is going to take a good ear.
Great job!
Thank you so much for the feedback! I'm really glad you liked the concept and vibe.
Your advice on the spatial mix and delay between the ears is super helpful—I’ll definitely work on refining those harsh frequencies and spatial placement in my next mix. Thanks again for hosting this great jam!
Nice work! I like the vibe you settle into. I'll agree with others that it doesn't sound very ambient at times, but sometimes it does. I think it's the lead synth and sometimes the percussion pulls me out of it sometimes. A little EQ and mixing magic would help a lot. Overall great listen!
Thanks for taking the time to listen!
Good point about the lead and percs pulling away from the ambient mood — I'll definitely keep your mixing and EQ advice in mind for next time.
Appreciate the feedback!
Hey there. This was pretty cool and interesting. You really did hit the vibe of a Japanese lake haha. Sounds very experimental haha. Though not strictly ambient, it was good. I liked the traditional instruments you used but that youwhoo was perhaps a bit loud? It was good just maybe a too loud. All in all, very mysterious! Good work here.
Thanks so much for listening and for the kind feedback!
I'm really glad the Japanese lake atmosphere and the mysterious vibe came through! And yeah, that voice shout might have been a little too loud haha 😂
Thanks again for listening!
You are most welcome!
I can hear boombap, but also traditional instruments. At times it sounds like yakuza gang music.
Thank you! “Yakuza gang music” was definitely not what I expected, but I can kind of hear it now.
Very experimental. I love the unexpected shift right after the 1-minute mark. Great job, cool piece!
Thank you! I'm really glad you enjoyed the unexpected shift around the one-minute mark. I wanted to make the piece a little unpredictable.
Cool percs, pretty innovative, you started pretty modern and than transitionned to a more organic sound palette, cool experimental stuff I would not have think to mix those. Some small EQ on the drone synth at 0:50 would be nice I was glad it changed somewhere else, there is lots of small ear candy like the classic japanese voice shout, cool track.
Thanks so much for the detailed feedback!
I'm really glad you noticed the transition to the organic textures, as well as the little ear candies like the voice shouts. And good catch on the drone synth around 0:50! I'll definitely keep your EQ suggestion in mind for next time.
I also really like the title "Yūgen" — I'll definitely check out your track!
Thanks again for listening so closely!
Doesn't sound too Ambient, but it sounds very interesting & Experimental. Pretty cool to hear the Soundtrack!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the experimental vibe. Thanks for checking it out!
You're welcome!
Super cool visualizer, I think it's the best visualizer I've seen so far in the jam. I really enjoyed the vibe of the track. I definitely thought the Taiko drums we're a cool touch. I wasn't expecting this interpretation of the theme but enjoyed it all the way through.
Thank you so much! Really glad you liked the visualizer and enjoyed the percussion vibe.
Appreciate you giving it a listen all the way through!
A lot of motion for a single ambient track. It's not really giving Japanese with the 808 toms and synthy bass, but it's not a bad track at all.
Based on the DAW screenshot it kind of seems like you just took existing loops and attempt to write over them, which works totally fine but you need to write for loops like that instead of attempting to write over them and hope they fit what you're creating.
Thank you for taking the time to listen and leave your thoughts!
Just to clarify one thing: I actually didn't use an 808 tom at all! The percussion was built from acoustic percussion loops. Hearing that it sounded like a synthesized 808 might be due to the heavy reverb I put on it—it was really interesting to hear your take on that!
Also, rather than just writing over a loop, I thought it'd be fun to EQ-split a few different loops across frequency bands and stack them together just to see what would happen (💦
I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the mix and overall atmosphere. Thanks again!
