Look at this tiny naked dude defending the furnace! What a guy!

Normally I'm not a huge fan of pixel art, but I think it really works here, with the retro sound effects.

Gameplay wise... I liked your game, but the furthest I got was the third wave! But even at this point I've seen a nice variety of upgrades, weapons and mechanics!

I'd say your submission plays and looks pretty good, but there's one more thing. I can't really see how the game relates to the theme. Like... you are already there! There's no way home, and if you leave the immediate vicinity of the furnace, the way back is a short one!

Over all- good submission, but I'd focus on the theme more next time. Keep it up!

Developer

Thank you! My game isn't directly related to the theme, every run was supposed to be long and difficult, and then you had to do smth/pay to move through the waves and go to your final destination. Well, after I've worked on the project for few days, I didn't really liked my idea and drifted from it (a lot as you can see). But overall, I really liked my game and gave it a try in this jam. Even if I don't get to win, I wanna make it to Steam or Crazy Games at least. I don't know if it really hits the small markets at least, but I wanna try harder for this one. Just needed some feedback here, thanks.

This is a fun arena shooter type game. I liked the reactor and cooling mechanic which was a unique twist on the genre. The movement and shooting were quite fun and the enemy progression was also quite balanced (for the easy difficulty). The art was decent, but felt that the font was a bit hard to read and some of the in-game elements were a bit hard to figure out if they were harmful/ helpful.

On the theme - frankly i see no relation to long way home in the theme, maybe im totally missing something?

Overall its a fun game, and has a lot of systems which games in this genre have, which can be expanded on and polished.

Developer

Thank you very much for the feedback!
Theme is not really directly related, but every run should've taken a lot of time and effort in my goal for the theme)

THIS IS CHAOS, FIRE, MONSTERS, AND SOMEHOW YOU ALSO HAVE TO KEEP THE FURNACE ALIVE! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‘น๐ŸŽฎ

I really like the idea behind The Furnace. Taking the Vampire Survivors-style wave shooter and adding furnace management gives the combat another layer of pressure. You're not just surviving waves you have another system to keep an eye on while everything around you gets increasingly intense. The rare legendary weapons and enemies are also a great touch for giving runs those unexpected moments! โš”๏ธโœจ

The biggest thing I'd polish is clarity during the chaos. Making projectiles easier to see, reducing the amount of screen space taken by the UI, and giving the player a clearer introduction to the furnace mechanics would make the action feel much fairer without taking away the difficulty. The core idea is already strong, so a little more readability could make a huge difference.

70 HOURS OF WORK AND IT REALLY SHOWS! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ† Especially getting this together only 43 minutes before the deadline that's a serious final push. You've built a solid foundation here, and I can definitely see why you wanted this to be your most polished game. Great job, silicon_gamedev! ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽฎ

Complicated!

Gameplay wise this was pretty hard to grasp. I found the mechanics to be fun, but it was very poorly explained and I am still not entirely sure if I was playing the game correctly. The game gets overwhelming very quickly and while I understand why you went for that for a vampire survivors game like this, but the projectiles being fired at me were pretty hard to see, and combined with the excessively large UI, it caused me to take damage and die to things I couldn't see and it felt unfair. The game itself is fun, but there are some unfair elements to it, that make it feel frustrating at times.

Visually, the sprites and effects are all pretty good, but like mentioned previously, the hard to see bullets and large UI hindered the visuals a lot.

The audio was good but a bit loud. Also I got a notable audio bug. I set my SFX and Music Volumes to 25% and when I died and returned to the menu, the volume got reset to max, but the slider still said 25%.

The theme interpretation was frankly just confusing to me, and I didn't understand it.

I think the core of this game is great, but there is a lack of polish here. I will say that if it was there, this could genuinely be a steam release.

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! I actually added tutorial level so you can understand the mechanics. And I know UI is bit too large and projectiles are annoying, I'll fix it when I upload it to Crazy Games (maybe Steam). Yeah, there might be some bugs because I didn't have time to test everything myself. I tried hard to make it polished, as your comment suggests, I have more work to do than it seems. Thanks a lot!

this is a very fun game!

the sound, art styles and ui are a perfect fit, the only thing that was bothering me was probably how it is a really confusing game at first playthrough, i didnt know what i was doing

Developer

Thank you very much! You might want to play the tutorial first if you don't really understand

There is a lot going on here and I like the idea of having to fight while also managing the furnace. It makes it more interesting than just walking around and shooting everything.

My biggest problem was how chaotic it gets. On hard especially there is SO much happening that sometimes I dont really know what I should focus on. I think reducing some of the visual clutter or making enemies easier to distinguish would help a lot.

I also had a weird problem after choosing an upgrade. The water starts spraying immediately and I cant really control it for a moment. I think the game should ignore attack inputs while the upgrade menu is open and only start reading them again after the menu fully closes.

The water range also confused me a lot. Visually the stream looks pretty short but enemies much farther away still take damage. Id either make the actual hitbox shorter or extend the water effect so you can clearly see the real range. Right now its hard to tell how close I actually need to be.

The UI is also quite large and when everything gets busy it starts covering too much of the screen. Making some parts smaller or more transparent during combat could help.

Still a pretty cool game and I can see a lot of work went into it. With some clearer feedback and less chaos I think the gameplay would feel much better.

If you have some time please check out my game too! Id really appreciate a rating and some feedback :)
