I had a ton of fun with this one, so satisfying to obliterate your opponents!
Fantastic work, wish there was more variety but it is a demo after all.  Whatever you come up with I'm sure it'll be great! Really nailed the vibe, from the sound to the visuals!

I will say, I'm not sure if the difficulty was working or if I misunderstood what it was for but they all felt just as easy, extreme maybe felt like a bit more of a challenge but no by much.

What an absolute blast! Pure chaotic fun, controls were smooth and responsive, graphics were solid, music is high energy and fits so well.
Would love to see more tracks, more selectable characters, and possibly a career mode. I still couldn't get the grasp of drifting nor how to execute it properly.

Hey! With FQ9 ending soon, I wanted to let you know that I won't be able to cover your game until after the event. If you're okay with waiting, just keep the game on the event and I'll be getting around to it over the next couple of months or so. :)

no problem at all buddy take your time!!

Had a lot of fun checking this out! We ran into some visual text bugs between the races where the speed desc kept mentioning slowest when we had the fastest selected - but this went away if you toggled away then returned. When we turned on the cheat to fly at the end I found an area near the pool with an item but I didn't notice a way to get up there normally. Might be good to have something in-game in the options to see the controls. Admittedly, I get super tunnel vision when playing racing games for the first time so I didn't notice a lot of the UI at first (I commented about the UI while playing then realized the things were there later). During the tutorial I did run into thing where I missed the item set twice in a row then tried to go backwards to get it but couldn't. It wanted me to use the items to take out an opponent but I ended up progressing after hitting them into a wall. 😅

It could be fun to have some sort of progression quests to unlock new skins or maps.

Overall, really fun! Looking forward to checking out how it develops!

This was fun! I ended up playing the steam version for steam controller support, it worked well with the steam controller but I did get a bunch of achievements I shouldn’t have?

Controls were good. I did normal, reverse, and mirror modes with 10 laps each and had a blast. 16 player matches are chaotic and so much fun, you can lead the pack for a solid 30s and then die and suddenly be thrown into the deadly messy middle. The splatters are really nice and make the crash cams a bit more colorful. The art style all around is really good, a few more characters and courses (and online multiplayer 😅) would turn this into a solid online game night.

I frequently felt like the track around the “dining: area was too nice, I’d rub along invisible walls without much care for speed. I’m not sure if the map is supposed to feel punishing like that, but I did feel like I had to try for the powerups I wanted because of how they spawned. I’m mostly looking for more reasons to crash because I think the animation is fantastic 🤣

Thank you so much for playing!! Yeahhh the achievements are bugged 😅 gonna get those fixed up soon! I do want to eventually make the next iteration on a racer like this with more content and game progress, etc, but I did consider adding a bit more to Hyperboard first!

  • GUI : Fine
  • Performance : Fine
  • Music / Sfx :
    • Music : Good
    • SFX : Mostly fine, some could do with tweaking, or additions
      • ....did I hear metal pipe?
      • Can become an absolute cacophony if you add 16 bots to the road rage mode as they all slam into one another, might need some balancing
      • Some sort of 'grinding' sound when braking / turning quickly
  • Gameplay : A hoverboard burnout , it's fine
  • Misc Issues :
    • You can kinda 'ride' on top of other racers
  • Notes :
    • Personally I'd say remove the 'quit to windows' options post-race , I muscle memoried it thinking it was a return to menu as that's where I'm used to that option being in most other racers I've played.
    • Elimination race would be a nice option [Drop the last person in the race every lap]
    • R-click on main-menu can close the game off , I thought this was a crash , might be good to remove that?
    • Game starts kinda loud, maybe lower the initial sound a bit and folks can raise it if need be?
  • Final Thoughts : Overall I do like this, but obviously there's a few things that could be done to improve, like a few more maps.

We had a lot of fun, just two things improvements needed:

1. I don't know why the camera keeps changing while I am racing, it felt like that belong to the ending review, not during the race, I crashed several times due to that until I practically memorized the track.

2. Wishing for more different tracks of different themes.

3. When you have the time/budget, a human model upgrade for the face meshes, that will make your game look very strong. Right now it still has the hobbyist modeler look, which you might want to move away from if you are going commercial with this title.

What we enjoyed:

The beautiful crashes, the items, the paint splat, this is a very satisfying game, look forward to trying more. I will try to make additional shorts to help you boost this title.

Hey!! Thanks so much for playing again! For the camera issue, I did see from the footage it kept looking either left or right for player 1, is that the camera issue you mentioned for? it could be a deadzone issue with the right stick (that's what makes looks around on controller). For the face meshes, is it the fact that the face's artstyle isn't fully 3D or you just want it to be improved in general? It's inspired from stylized games like A Hat in Time where the mouths for example are actually 2D artwork instead of super detailed 3D ones, I can look into changing it if it just looks cheap rather than retro or nicely lower-poly. Thank you for making shorts of the game!

Jam HostSubmitted (14 edits)

The issue is not the texture, your texture is fine, the approach to A Hat In Time works fine, but the face anatomy form is not correct on your model's face and having the cheek being too narrow, it has the basic "generic" anime look (it's a 3 star out of 5) without the subtle details in cheeks and form of the professional anime look, the shape is fine but needs a bit of cushion, the additional fat on the cheeks, especially with the large goggles, you may have to exaggerate that a tiny bit, if you have no form around the lips due to using texture, you need to lower the nose to be smaller, that's also a tiny adjustment, smaller but still visible enough for the goggles, for a child-like face appearance to not fall in uncanny valley. (link the video, sculpture is easier to observe those details.)

Area around the chest a bit too cartoony, need a hint of collarbone definition, if you want to get away with it, you can't sell boobs, if there's boobs, there are collarbones, they go together, legs need to be a tiny bit longer to match with the large hands and head size with the hair, these little things gives a hobbyist look for anime standard, now that you updated your graphics and icons, branding with new art, you need to match market standard on the 3D model as well.

Otherwise, it's lowering those standard as a whole to Mii level, which A Hat in Time uses as well, which uses a chibi proportion and low poly for all things. Main thing is the set consistency in art direction.

Right now your direction seems to be going for a retro anime look, but since its a new game, you need to find a balance between retro look and new releases as standards, I like the current look, if I were you I would just upgrade the assets to bring up the value.

The anime ready asset models will often be that of teenager size body and proportion, you will have to make sure you find adult ones or adjust it yourself. Also you might want to start adding different outfit meshes not just texture as well to start giving it the polish of a commercial title, then it will really compete in the game market.

Yes, that camera issue looking left or right on player 1 is the issue that was inducing crash on my end.

Developer(+1)

for the controller, can you do me a favor and screenshot the results of this controller testing the same the controller you used for player one? If the right stick comes back at 0 that's something (really) weird i haven't ever seen on the game (and i dont think i saw that happen to you last, the camera's funcitonality has been mostly unchanged since you last played) or it could be some stick drift. i could even try to implement adjustable deadzones so the existing deadzone can be increased just in case, as for the art thank you for the feedback!  https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad

aaaah a gamepad issue, I am using a new one, 8bitDo, my kiddo using the Xbox PowerA controller doesn't have that it seems, thats my old one.

oh wow now that's interesting!

this might help even more, I think this particular gamepad goes a bit further than others.

This game is SO RAD.

The aesthetic is so extremely strong that I was losing my mind just changing the color palette in the menu. The game also *feels* really good to control. Overall, everything just feels so polished.

It's really hard to give meaningful feedback on this game, because I feel like I don't really have any solid criticisms. It's super fun to play, and the game becomes delightfully hectic once you turn up the difficulty and speed. I could see people getting really good at movement techniques and speedrunning and stuff with the strong foundation that this game is built on, and I feel like it would be really fun to watch a pro play this game. I think the only thing more I could want would be content-wise; just additional race tracks and potentially additional racers. Other than that, though, no real criticisms! Great job on creating a game with a bomb ass aesthetic!

I played your game on stream around 2:11:25 (volume levels aren't PERFECT sorry bro!!)

Thank you so much for playing, as someone who also is attempting to stay relatable I'll say that  your commentary was that of a sigma skibidi rizzler from Ohio! It was really funny lol!
Since Hyperboard is a free vertical slice, i could bring concepts over for more content into a successor game, but I may look into adding a bit more to this one plus some improvements! I'm not exactly sure what I want to do at the moment but I'll think I'll figure it out 😎

Submitted(+1)

ooh i LOVE a vertical slice! That gets me super excited for whatever you'd pull into a successor! Good luck with whatever project you do next - i know your bar for quality is going to be soo high

thank you so much!! I'm hyped to see what you got cookin' up in the future!

[08th / 08th]

Understood. I'm out.

Developer

Before you're out for good, did you get a chance to try the game on Easy difficulty or practice in the How To Play tutorial mode? Also, which speed class were you on?

Submitted (1 edit)

Used all default. Finished 4th on Easy.

Indication of drifting is too weak - nothing shows me I am drifting or not.

[CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY] Gameplay: Turning on the road = select which wall to crash into. Drifting MAY let you stay uncrushed while getting stuck in the wall - I rather respawn once more. Moving away from obstacle = falling into the pit instead. Whatever you do is only to make you lose. Many ways. Many different ways. Many "fun" ways, presume? It's not.

Traffic is always on Your way no matter what. Or maybe I am SO unlucky?

"AIR TILT", whatever it is, does not work. Tried to push "Up/Down" many times - just nothing happens.

Pickup Items disappear too fast, so you are forced to use that right after pickup, not when you actually need it.

The game just consecutively repeats: YOU LOSE!
