How does your game meet GBJam's theme
I interpreted "Old Gold" in two ways:
-as a literal old treasure
-as memories of a time you can't go back to

Strong atmosphere, great way to start the game with the death and the apology. It immediately creates interest and mystery. The melancholy story, music, and palette all work together really well, and the long shadows give the world a great sense of depth.

I also found the battle screen interesting, would have liked to have seen some animation there.

I did get a little lost at times, but I think that mostly added to the mood. Very cool interpretation of the theme, and one of the more memorable entries I’ve played.

Very happy to play this one on gameboy! (still haven't figured out what this button is for)

Woooww!! It's so cool seeing my game in an actual console! Thank you for showing me this!
I agree on the battle. I wish I could have made the characters move but I think it will be too difficult.
If I rework the game I may add some sort of light VFX to spice it up a little.
Anyway, thank you so much for playing or for taking the time to comment!

As for the button  [SPOILERS] :
The two puzzles have to be resolved to access buttons, which, once activated,
allow for one of the doors in the dungeon to open :-) If you finished the game
no need to worry about it! The button opened what it needed to!
No secrets! Or at least not that kind of secrets.

I really wish I *had* played this one on-stream.  I loved it.  Great atmosphere, melancholy story.  I thought it was odd there was a turn-based fight at the beginning of the game but then never again.  Was I just lucky, or was that intentional?

Still, great game.

Developer

Thank for you for playing and for your kind comment!
You can fight the old woman too and, originally,  I wanted to add another mandatory battle and another npc (which could be killed),
But didn't have the time! That's the reason why battles are not a big presence.

Oh, one issue I found when replaying it on stream... it is possible to go through one wall, walk into the next room, and get stuck in the corner.

I had to restart the whole game to get out of it.

Congrats on sixth place in the Gameboy Soul category!

Developer

I have been notified for that bug! Sorry you had to restart! Thank you for taking the time to play it on stream!
And thank youuu :-))) !!!

What a story, it was a nice gameplay. At first i was a bit lost but I got the gist and went on a journey.

Developer

Glad you liked it!
Thank you for playing!

the game glitch is actually more immersive and detailed as if you are loading the old save file of the jrpg game that has already been beaten a long ago

Developer(+1)

That was the idea!

Whoa, I felt like I was playing Zelda and Undertale at the same time!!! Awesome game. If you want, you can rate my game :)
Developer(+1)

Old school Zelda was one of the inspirations!
Glad you liked it! And I will if I find the time!

woww the atmosphere in this is so well done. i really enjoyed the theme and writing, the art style looks amazing too! nice colour palette, the golden yellow looks really good against the cool tones. even the music fits perfectly. i got a little lost navigating the map but i figured it out eventually. cool game, thanks for sharing!

Begin lost is intended! (to a certain degree)
Thank you for playing and taking the time to write a comment!

I loved it. I'm always a sucker of getting thrown in the middle of a story we have to piece together.

Stunning environment with a very good palette, probably the best environments I've seen on gb studio :0 It fits perfectly the game boy aesthetic while providing depth and height. The moments where we have to cross the desert with no indication of if we're moving or not really adds something to the whole tone!

The music fits the game perfectly, and the theme interpretation is very touching, and also very cool!

Altogether an amazing entry! The rare kind that feels complete in a gamejam xD

Congrats to you! Hope this was as fun for you to make than it was for me to play!

Aww thanks!! Glad you liked it so much <3

There is a nice dreary feeling to this I enjoy that is echoed with the long shadows. I sometimes found myself confused on what was wall so I wonder if there may have been another way to get those cool shadows. I loved the introduction and the mystery around this. Very cool :)

Developer

Ah, If I revisit it I will try to see if I could make the shadows more clear!
Thank you for your feedback and for playing!

i would love to play this and yet, i seem not to be able to start the game by pressing enter (in the browser). does anyone have a similar issue?

Developer

This error is intentional! (On new game just let the game do it's thing and press A to continue from an existing save file)
If you select new game and continue you will arrive at the same point.

The palette is really good, the music is pretty nice, in a way it reminded me a lot of System Erasure's VoidStranger.
The twist of having a game that has already started is pretty good too, and I like the effort of putting little scripted sequences to emphasize the idea of a world long gone (probably because I am working on something similar atm!)

All in all, chapeau bas! :)

Developer

Thank you!!
I'm glad I managed to convey the idea of a lost world :-)

Cool game! I really like the color palette, music, and the authentic Gameboy feel. I found it pretty unclear where to go or what to do, but exploring was fun anyway.

I noticed a couple bugs:
- I'm getting an error when I try to start a new game (after that fails, it seems Continue allows me to start a new one)
- I'm able to walk through a few different wall types, which causes me to get stuck where I shouldn't be

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you! And yet I may have made it too cryptic haha...

The first bug is intentional!
The second one...not so much.
Do you remember where that was?

Ooh that's interesting! It must've gone over my head haha.

If you start from the beginning, head south until you enter the next part of the map, then immediately head west for a while. You should pass the skeleton that sits on the cliff above you. Shortly after that you run into two "layers" of cliffs. If you step just between them, you're able to start walk on the cliff tiles themselves. Below is a screenshot showing an example where you continue west, walking along these walls until you jump to this other part of the map and get stuck.

Hope this helps!

Developer

Aw shucks!
Thank you for telling me!
