Many good ideas here, but i think the flow is unengaged. Instead of having to go through lenghty tutorial, should just put them into action with a default ship with decent setup. Then after player know the purpose you can make the first ship unavailable (damaged, captured by enemy or sold to debt collector), then player will have to build from basic. Also the dialogs are rather technical, should just make it casual but still have plot/tast points. Love it if the dialogs shows the character personality too. I love ship building game, and can't wait to play the improved one. Good idea, dev!

Thanks for the feedback! Right now, we're setting up dedicated tooltips for the tutorials, as there is definitely a lot to learn when getting started with the game. This should hopefully reduce a lot of the bloat in the VN and improve the dialogue experience. The ideas around why the ship is unavailable is also really helpful, and we'll definitely incorporate it into the dialogue + story. Thanks again!

The game looks and feels very solid, and the amount of technical work you guys pulled off for a game jam is impressive. Your game ran into a similar problem with mine in that it would be a great game if this werent a game jam. Many game jammers usually give a game 5-10 minutes (in general) of playtime before making a decision since there are about 20 games we need to play. Your game is quite unique and fun, but since there is a lot of information and things to figure out with the game it makes the game unintuitive (specifically for a game jam). If this were a commercial release (where the audiance didnt have much pressure to play a lot of games) this game would be a hit!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback, and for playing our game! We definitely felt that way, and we hope that people will come back after the jam to play the updated game in its entirety. We're working on reducing the information overload at the start of the game and adding better tutorialization,  which should hopefully help with getting into the actual gameplay much faster!

Peak sound track, peak art style, and also i like these semi-sandbox type of games.....and the cat girl.

Thank you for your feedback, and for playing our game!

Had a difficult time figuring it out, but seems like there is something there. I would agree with MintyPython. Could you put out a video on how this is supposed to be played? Would be interested in trying it again :)

Developer

Thank you for taking the time to play our game! We've now updated the page with a first 15 minutes of gameplay - this should hopefully give you a better idea of how the game works (As a note, some of the machines in the jam version are bugged, so progression through each of the tech trees is currently limited). We're also working on putting together a more concrete in game tutorial, which will be implemented once the jam is over, and hopefully reduce the bloat in the VN. Please let us know if you have any other advice, confusions, or suggestions!

There’s a lot of good stuff in here, but I think some of it works against itself. Ordinarily I’m all for a game with a focus on dialogue and narrative, but since the tutorial itself is buried under an avalanche of unrelated dialogue, it’s very difficult to actually learn how to play the game. After figuring it out, I did enjoy flying around and fighting and the general gameplay loop is enjoyable, but the VN sections don’t feel like they contribute as much to the experience.

I tried not to at first, but I found myself skipping large portions of dialogue just because what was supposed to be a tutorializing conversation goes on multiple tangents and doesn’t actually end up explaining the new mechanic. It made it harder to get endeared to the characters when I was actively choosing not to read what they say. It’s a matter of personal taste but I also wasn’t very fond of some of the kinds of humor present in the game too, especially around the robot assistant.

As for the actual gameplay itself, farming resources is fun and the combat is good too. I especially like building the ship, and I think the hangar is the best part. I like how the shape of it has a real effect on how it handles and behaves when you’re flying it through space, and I REALLY like the tetris-esque aspect of getting all the weird hull shapes to fit together logically. But as good as the hangar is, the UX in that section definitely needs work. You can’t delete pieces or edit the behavior of an attachment if you’re holding a piece, and I couldn’t find a button to deselect what I was currently holding, so I needed to leave the hangar entirely and re-enter it just to interact with it properly. That UX flaw also I think will lead to players not understanding the collection mechanic, since it requires setting up the grabbers to react to meat in order to beat the first objective, and they get blocked from doing so while holding a spaceship part with their cursor.

Thank you so much for taking the time to play our game and giving us such detailed feedback! I definitely agree with most of your points (particularly the one about factory builder UX). After this jam, we plan to add more in-game tutorial/explanations for how the factory builder works. Given your thoughts on VN-tutorial integration, we might go for a more traditional tutorial that guides the player through all the UI and mechanics in factory mode. We're also in the process of making a video walkthrough tutorial for the initial stages of the game!

For the VN, the intention was not for it to be a slog, so we will definitely take your feedback into account and probably trim it down a bit. I also know it is annoying that your progress resets when you close the game, so we will (attempt) to add a save feature somewhere down the line.

Thanks again! We really appreciate you for getting so far into the game despite the wonky UX lol!

PS. Here are the controls for factory building. We forgot to mention it into the actual game 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
de-select = Esc
rotate = R
flip = H

Its very pretty and I like the idea, but I had a difficult time figuring out what I needed to do. I recommend adding some tooltips on hover perhaps to explain what things do and then some tutorializing to walk the player through the gameplay loop.

For sure! After playtesting it a bit more, we realized we may have over-scoped the game a bit 😭. We're thinking of putting together a tutorial video for the initial stages of the game so it's a bit more clear what the player is supposed to do. Generally, you're supposed to talk to the NPCs to unlock quests. After you complete the quests, you can unlock new factories and expand your ship. You can then take your ship into space to gather materials for NPC quests. Definitely let us know of any bugs, problems with gameplay mechanics, or other suggestions!

haha "overscoped a bit" the story of game jams for sure :) <3
You could probably add a plain text explanation on the page notes pretty high up as well in the mean time - something sort of like what you just told me in the reply.
