Reminds me of a very old Snoopy game from over 30 years ago. Didn’t notice that going from room to room dropped the timer, so when I switched between rooms very rapidly because of failing jumps, the end came too fast :( Still had a good time though!
I loved the dialogues, and the silly characters. Spoiled milk couldn't stop me from finishing your game!
A very ambitious and interesting platformer! I also ended up in the locked room, drank the milk, got sick.
the sound of jumping is cute! i climbed the tree which reminded me the feeling of playing game Dizzy on Sega Saturn i believe... i ended up in the locked room, drank milk, got sick and turned off :D
Yeah, it's expected to get stuck or die in Dizzy-like games in the beginning. I was thinking about making it easier so one cannot mess up but then told myself... no! you must learn! ;D but after the tree there is only one location you can die if you don't have the right thing to use. Originally it had 32 rooms, then 30 rooms but the 14 days, well, 14 minutes (which translates to 84 moves) were super tight to finish and I wanted to keep the "14" reference to the deadline (in both game and jam's two weeks), so I lowered it to 24 rooms (removed some hallway rooms) to give you some moves left, like on a second or third run you can definitely finish it in time. Right now I am working on improving character animations and graphics, so the rooms are less empty and hollow. But I will update it only after the end of voting, obviously.
the game is very basic and feels stiff in control/movement...
but on the other hand it has the undergoing mood and feeling that emerges i dont know from where. it reminds me that retro era perfectly because of these flaws. it can be a hardcore game if polished or just you know like keep it basic in some aspects. today many games are just smoother, with advanced graphics in comparison to old retro games, but those old were the ones we continued playing. now players are changed, experienced advanced games. so i think balance of modern and retro in these aspects would help you. which aspects of retro games difficulty should it keep?!
The writing had me grinning — the old scientist's 'I don't remember random stuff' line was a highlight, and the retro pixel-art Dizzy-style presentation fits the tone perfectly. One small UX note: I had trouble advancing dialogue with Space/Enter and had to click directly on the speech bubble — might be worth checking that the keyboard shortcuts are consistently wired up.
Thanks for your nice comment and the UX feedback. It's probably related to /t/902383/option-to-prevent-keyboard-page-scrolling-for-embedded-... I am not sure if I can upload a new version during voting (will ask on Discord) but as a temporary fix try pressing E instead of Space/Enter (or going to Fullscreen and then ending fullscreen) or try the Wavedash version (link in game description).
Try it now, please. The updated version with preventDefault() on keydowns for space, enter, etc. has just been uploaded (with permission from the Game Jam host Paweł). On my Windows laptop it catches space and enter correctly in game when you click/tap on the game's "Run game" button and the game is active.
Went down to the room with the locked door. Didn't have the key. Drank spoiled milk. Couldn't get back up.
Had to restart the game. 😂
ZX Spectrum memories unlocked. Thanks! ❤️
A nice, little adventure game! I made it just in time, but luckily I managed to clear it on my first try, which made me really happy. No spoilers, but I spent the whole time thinking the elevator was just a shortcut. Nice work!
strong oldschool + Dizzy games vibes. Absolutely love it
