hey jammers! as i write, we have three days and seven minutes left until the jam officially begins. are you guys getting excited? i sure am!!!!!!

this thread is for everyone & anyone to post their daily progress. figured out a tough programming issue? nailed part of your final sketch? got a cool feature you want to tease? share your triumphs & troubles below!

please feel free to double-post, edit your own post, etc. :)

If I understood correctly we are free to begin with this even before the jam started, so I began today. My game will be about parenting a robot. So I drew a placeholder robot and made it talk. Say Hi to Robo. He is a good boy.

i love that it's a robot! i want to pet the robot

Submitted(+3)

Hi, I actually started last month when I found out about this jam (I saw the rules that it's okay to begin earlier + I was worried about developing a game while balancing a daytime job lol). I wanted time because it's been a long LONG time since I tried developing a game again & I'm trying Godot out for the 1st time...  Been working on this simple game everyday after work, and finally managed to get it all running! Just some more things to fix, if all goes well I should be able to publish the game & submit it to the game jam close to the starting day...if that's okay?

It's a simple game about petting the dog, get hearts, & use said heart to buy items (food & toys) for the dog!

(+1)

looks simple and cute! i love this art style

(+1)

i hope godot is treating you well lol, honestly good call getting a head start on learning a new engine because that gets HARD. the hard black outlines and pastel colours reminds me of the look of the old macintosh UI, which is a lovely style.

Submitted

Thank you! Yes, lol even at the end stages of development, I'm still finding new settings to toggle in Godot... How many settings I missed & ended up brute-forcing through (jumbled up) code I wonder... ;)

hi! i'm lina and i also started early. i was already thinking of making a pet sim and when i saw this jam i felt so inspired and excited!

i wanted to make a post here today to mark what has been done before the jam starts.

you can already:

- choose between 3 eggs (that have horns because that makes sense)

- there are three "species", each with two evolutions (a lot of art still needs to be drawn)

- you can choose your room type and pet name

- you can buy and use items

- pet your pet, be nice or mean to it

- improve your pet's stats

- there will be 3 minigames (the first one is working, second is WIP and i haven't started the third)

for the visual style i wanted to reference a lot of online spaces and old web!

that's it, as i'm a solo dev i hope to use this space to interact a bit with other devs and see what you're doing, as sometimes it's easy to forget things outside my own game exist

Submitted

Ohh, you nailed the old web artstyle! It looks great XD. Many features (even stats) too! :0

good to know, thanks ^^

yes!!!! i love that it looks like a web game from before the flash era! not to sound evil but all simulator games these days are missing the option to be mean. this is so inspiring to look at, i'm curious to see what the pet stats do because that's my favourite part of pet sim design. also jeez the fact that you've already gotten minigames working is crazy.

okay good to know there are evil people out there, i was worried no one would go at that option

Oh your game looks amazing ! Love the artstyle and general idea. If you ever need some music/sound I'd be happy to help :)

just started prototyping today after brainstorming my idea for a few... the basic premise is a reverse digital pet, where you play AS the digital pet. the main idea is a loosely karma-based reincarnation mechanic, where living "better" (or more accurately, "naturally") allows you to accumulate points that unlock new species to reincarnate as. right now, the only real thing you can do to gain karma is wiggle around as an egg, but the system is functional way faster than i expected, LOL

(+1)

A REINCARNATION SYSTEM!! awesome!!! i feel like trying to figure out how a new species is meant to live its life after unlocking would be a really fun kind of trial and error, like a pet sim roguelike almost.

(+1)

i love this idea! i've never seen anything like it

PET THE DOG

Pet, feed, and play with your virtual doggo!

https://acsis.itch.io/pet-the-dog

It may be early, but the game I created for this Pet Jam is now out! :D

(+1)

meowwww

i think i got some good brainstorming/story planning done for today

a little vmu doodle...

i think this project will be a kinda... multimedia vn/comic scifi thing... i gotta hammer out some semblance of an outline, i think the first week will mainly just be focusing on that and drawin out concepts

(+1)

I didn't do anything yesterday and I didn't do anything today except draw unrelated pictures. I'm listening to the pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky ost while painting and thinking lots about Unity and game mechanics.

added food types and basic foods, as well as some testing species! also started work on trainers/owners, making "digital pet" an accurate description of the player creature, LOL.

my next steps are:

  • popup alert labels when karma is gained (green) or lost (red)
  • working on karma progression balancing for the two mechanics that currently exist (eating and moving)
  • expanding trainer functionality (spawning food to feed you, taking you to run errands in town)

smaller update so i'll just reply to this post, but..........

the base trainer is officially functional! they now have a chance to drop food every 15 seconds by default; 100% if they didn't drop food last tick, and 50% if they did. once there's more... game in the game, i'll be able to tweak these odds depending on how viable foraging turns out to be.

additionally, there's now a shopping_threshold that gets checked against the current size of their food inventory; once food stores get low enough, they add a "grocery shopping" event to the front of their queue, which will make the next event a "grocery" event. grocery events also ignore the event queue cap, and can be added to the queue even when it's otherwise considered full. as i explain this i'm realizing i should add a check to make sure the next queued event isn't ALREADY grocery, otherwise they might queue a ton of shopping trips...

while events can be queued and technically triggered for testing purposes, they don't do anything yet except delete themselves. working on that is the next step because it involves drawing another background, LOL

Submitted

True, a lot of times we remember stuff we should be checking in retrospect 馃槀.

Is the trainer the white guy? Who are we playing as? Seems like we aren't the trainer? 馃

A photo of an unfinished sculpture of a bird monster hatching from a Tamagotchi style egg.

I was really charmed by the "clay sculpture" idea in the post ideas here thread, so here's my little guy in progress.

I've never made an articulated sculpture before (if you can even call it that, cause the head's just a separate piece that slots into a hole), so we'll see how this ends up working out. Possibly I will built a tiny VN or a zine or something around this guy, or possibly I'll just sculpt and paint it.

Submitted

Genuinely I don't know what this is, but it looks really cool (really!). The lower body looks kinda like a tamagotchi...?

It's a tamagotchi hatching like an egg into some sort of physical creature! Maybe if you raise it well enough, it will become real.

(1 edit) (+2)

Forgot to post about last weekend's progress, but today's progress on my entry : some 3D modeling (somehow took almost all afternoon to make text follow the curve of the model...), some shader stuff, and a sketch of the 2D scene on the screen! The goal is to make something like a tamagotchi with which you raise a magical familiar!

this looks really impressive. will moving the sphere also affect the moth in any means

I didn't plan to at first, but perhaps! I'm still not sure of what I want to do for minigames, so adding one where moving or shaking the toy is part of the gameplay is a nice idea (initially i only added the rotation to be able to see the whole model and the parallax in the screen :>)

Submitted

The color & shape of the model looks so cute! Virtual Familiar XD. What's that on top of the model?

Thank you! You can't see it in that gif since it's pretty zoomed in, but the model is actually a bottle, so the top part is the neck :>

this looks so pretty!

working on a mouse game where you can build a house of whatever size you want... sort of.

I want to make a pet game where you can make several mice (4 for the limit) live togheter and you can out furnitures feed them, bath them. you get the idea and even put furnitures so they can interact with it like in animal crossing. i still got alot to do and i feel that time is not on my side but i will add what i can before halloween. of course, its not the best game nor has the best pixel work (crappy one if you ask me), but what can you expect from a novice developer like me? on the bright side, the game is comming as dandy.

(+1)

The mouse is very cute! I really like the concept of the game too, it has the potential to be very adorable. Don't be too hard on yourself, making a game is so many skills to learn, so whatever you make you can be proud of it :D

well. i guess you are right, thanks for the commen

Submitted(+1)

Wow, it looks interesting, so many features to choose from :0. I don't think it looks crappy at all, I'd say it has charm like retro games! :)

update of game. i've been adding game objects and descriptions on the store. the items will work as, "while you left the game idle, not closed but idle, the mouse can self take care... that is if they move toward the item you just placed".  3 arcades based of 3 mice/rats games where added. just for fun. the description of each can give you a hint of what game is trying to describe.

the food items are ALL cheese related meals. because yes! (WARNING: DO NOT FEED YOUR MOUSE/RAT PET WITH SOME OF THESE, YOU MIGHT MAKE THEM SICK OR KILL THEM).

Today I imported my model and some animations and started working on shader materials. I made the model and rig a while ago for a project that didn't pan out. I've learned a lot more about working in Godot since then and I'm excited to revisit this concept!

(+1)

looks nice, it reminds me to the one monster from "AAAAH! real monsters" is it an aline of some sort of?

(+1)

Thanks, you are not the first to say it reminds them of AAAAH! real monsters. Resemblance there is a coincidence though. It's not an alien, it's something worse

(+1)

oh. my god. this really is a precious miracle. if the full game is anywhere as bizarre as this thing then i 'm going to love it

(+1)

So weird (meant in an absolutely positive way)! A precious miracle indeed!

Made baby version :3
It's actually the same model, just with changes made to the rig and a shape key to make it more plump. That way I can age it in real time (rather than having it evolve in stages like a pokemon). It also lets me reuse animations (sort of, it's not perfect).

omg evolving in real time is such an amazing mechanic! i'm anxious to try it

Updated the shader material to make more skin colors based on logic found here: https://toneyalexander.github.io/inclusive-color-space/
It lets me change skin depth, flushing, and warmth independently. It works well for fantasy colors too at more extreme values. I had to make a new texture for this to work. I used only RGB values to map blush, pigment, and eye color respectively.

I also made a bunch of shape keys to modify physical features. Like weight, muscles, and a bunch of different eye, mouth, and jaw shapes (not pictured). Next steps are more variations, and a genetic system. Since a lot of these traits are built with sliders instead of being hard coded I should be able to make countless varieties. My goal is to make no two look exactly the same.

Hi! Been working on my game slowly, gonna be a chao garden/pokemon type thing. Game itself is just boring UI at the moment so here's some of the fellas I've designed so far:

(+1)

this look great, they remind me of digimon for its appearance.

Thanks! Yeah they do look like the baby Digimon lol

Submitted(+1)

Oohh, they look really cute XD. Seem like their color indicates their elements? 馃槷

(+1)

Thanks! Yeah these ended up looking kinda elementalish but I plan to make a big variety of them hopefully.

(+1)

They're so cute <3 If I was playing that game I would pick the electric one

Thanks!!

(+1)

Wasn't a fan of how things were looking so I scrapped it all lol, started over in a top downish environment and redesigned the fellas and I think its looking a lot nicer!

you have a talent for making these pixel sprites look so soft and squishy. very adorable! in unrelated news my game is also currently stuck with the godot default UI theme so we are twinning in that regard 馃馃 our games are cousins

Thanks!! Lol yeah UI theme always gets left to the end.

(+2)

i've been working on a prototype where you observe 2 characters living together like their apartment is a hamster enclosure. i have nothing to show because i've been focused 100% on the code and have not made a single graphic yet (the characters are currently 3d donut meshes living in a grey box ^_^) but as you can see from these git commits i'm giving them a wonderful enriching life

ooh, this sounds very cool and right up my alley. looking forward to seeing how these donuts progress(喋婈挸藡)喋煃┾湩is it going to be 100% observation-based or will the player be able to effect their actions somewhat?

i hope i can give the player a way to influence them!! depending on how much time it takes, interaction might be limited. i am fr just seeing where this project takes me without being very strict on myself lol

nah, observation's cool, too. like the couple are an exhibit in a human zoo, twilight zone-style, and the player's some weirdo alien tasked with watching (over) them. v. cute either way.

that's such a relief actually, now i dont have to be too worried about not having enough time to add interactivity. i can confirm with the more activities i add, just observing them is pretty fun ^_^b

(+1)

Finished a workable prototype that I can hopefully bring into Godot to grow into a home for a digital deskpet. Rn I'm planning for the pet to be just a plane mapped to a texture atlas floating in front of the 'screen' for max retro vibes, so no actual pet yet.

cough there was definitely no inspiration drown from monsters of any digital sort no siree cough

this looks interesting, i would love to see whats up.

It looks adorable! I wish it was a physical toy so I could hold it in my hands :0

(+2)

I finally have a bit more showable progress :') I spent way too long fussing over the menu system, added a litte gal, and did some "text"
