You have to keep your camp fire burning whilst defending it from goblins and orcs, if they destroy your campfire then you will no longer be able to "Stay Warm"

Fun at first but gets monotonous quite quickly, also I kept getting launched across the map, not sure if this was intentional or not, but once it happens you're pretty much dead. Nice pixel art though.
The game is genuinely impressive! The animations, visual effects, hit combos, overall polish, and all the little details make it feel great to play.
There are a few things I'd like to point out:
- In my opinion, this is the game's biggest strength. Everything looks fantastic, and every action feels satisfying and responsive. You can really feel the impact of each hit, which makes the combat much more enjoyable.
- The game doesn't fully explain some of its mechanics. For quite a while, I thought the campfire couldn't be restored and that the wood was purely cosmetic. I was also wondering why blocking and rolling were necessary when the attack combo hits all nearby enemies and repeatedly stuns them. Since you're encouraged to stay close to the campfire, rolling doesn't seem particularly valuable. And because killing enemies quickly is so important, blocking also feels less useful. I feel like removing these two mechanics wouldn't significantly affect the combat or its depth in the current version.
- Honestly, I found this particular game jam restriction "Stay Warm" a little loosely integrated into the game. You could replace the campfire with almost any other object that needs protection, and the gameplay would remain largely the same. This isn't necessarily a flaw, but I think the theme could have been explored in a more interesting way. For example, periodic cold winds, heavy rain, or other environmental hazards could make staying warm feel like a more integral part of the experience.
Overall, I think this is a pretty good little game in its own right. It's also clear that the developer has experience from previous projects. A beginner would probably struggle to handle the artwork, animations, polish, and all the other elements at this level within such a short timeframe.
Please don't take that the wrong way - I actually find it really encouraging to see someone's experience paying off and translating into such a polished result. I'll be rooting for you and looking forward to seeing what you create next! ❤️
Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to leave a lengthy review, it shows you took the time to properly play my game which is such an amazing feeling!
To address a few of your points:
- Thank you so much, I usually specialize in game feel and graphics when ever I am working on a project with another team member. Typically on my Jito account (team account for game jams) I do all the art work whilst my friend does all the coding so you pointing out that is my biggest strength is a huggeeee compliment and lets me know I'm doing something right lol! :D
- As for the campfire restore, I unfortunately didn't have enough time to implement a full scale tutorial, however, there is a section in the tutorial button that explains the campfire and the woods uses, I do agree though that the game could've benefitted from a more in depth explanation.
- The rolling, in my opinion, is necessary for the game as a means of fast transport ( being able to get to far away trees quicker ) as well as being able to evade enemies if you are being overwhelmed . It also proves as an easy way to get closer to the fire faster if you accidently go too far away or even a way to get behind enemies and draw them away from the campfire.
- The blocking however is pretty useless - admittedly I've never made a parry system in a game before and wanted to try in this one, originally when I implemented it the enemies were ALOT harder so it served way more of a purpose, however, I had to make the enemies easier in the end as I feared the game would be too difficult which caused the block to become pointless, still fun to do from time to time though if I do say so myself lol.
- I also agree with the jam restriction being a little loose, I think I should have made the camp fire play a bigger role than what it did. Something like if the campfire is destroyed then the player will slowly start to freeze until its restored would've made for a much better limitation implementation.
Don't worry non of your feedback was taken in a negative light, I love hearing where I've went wrong and how I can improve for the future, I'll be sure to keep in mind a few of these points going into my next jam!
Thank you so much again for your review! :D
This is a truly, *truly* beautiful game. The art style is simply stunning.
Honestly, the art is beautiful (I wish I could make art like that), and the concept is great, just like Kingdom Games. I think it could be expanded upon easily, and what you have now is a solid game.
The art is cheff kiss. Looks awesome. The combat feels good too. Although I’m not sure about the slight slide on the movement and also I didn’t use the block at all. Awesome game!
dev i really like this game espiacially in 72 hours i don't know how but the game i made in godot can you rate it i wanna see that are people interested i i am 6th grader and i joined godot 7 days ago and immediately picked this game jam to learn in a deadline
i love this game especially the art and movement. only one time i attacked and flew in that direction very far. the tutorial felt like just text but i loved the gameplay and it looked amazing
Cool game! I loved the pixel art. The dragons flying around in the background and the trees growing into existence is super cool!
One thing for me was the tutorial was a bit too much of a wall of text. I just went in and tried to figure it out myself :D Took me a few tries but eventually I got it.
I like the mechanic of balancing your wood with your bonfire health, and having to cut down trees to get more wood. The combat was satisfying though mostly it felt like I just needed to mash the attack button and that got me pretty far.
Overal: Great presentation, cool little game loop and great attention to detail. Good job!
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a full review, I'm glad you enjoyed the gameplay loop despite the slightly lackluster combat, I always get worried my game is too difficult as I don't usually have any time for play testing so that balance can be a little hard to achieve, I attempted to make it a little more interesting with the multiple enemy types.
As for the tutorial it pained me to write just a full wall of information lol but I only had so much time to add it and thought it would be better than nothing despite how much of an eyesore it is ha!
I'm so glad you enjoyed my game in spite of all this though and thanks again for the review and kind words!! :D
Holy hell this one is hard, sometimes I got knocked away far from camp. Nonetheless, it is still quite fun
I love the art style and the animations. The combat feels great, maybe a bit difficult with a keyboard. I got slayed every time, strong armor but weak campfire ☺️
