[RPG][Game Development][Team Wanted] - Building an original 2D fantasy RPG together

About the Project

Hi everyone ! I’m a developer looking to bring together a small motivated team to create an original 2D fantasy RPG.

The goal is to build an adventure set in a rich fantasy universe, featuring multiple species, memorable characters, interconnected storylines, mysteries, and a world that feels alive. I want the narrative to be more than a sequence of disconnected adventures ; characters, events, and discoveries should influence one another as the story unfolds.

I’m particularly interested in creating a distinctive turn-based combat system, drawing inspiration from different RPGs while developing mechanics and an identity of it’s own.

The project is still in it’s early stages, and that’s intentional. I want to find the right people to help shape it’s fondations rather than make every major decision alone before assembling a team.

Who I’m looking for ?

I’d lovee to bring together a small team of people with complementary skills :

  • Game developers and / or programmers : People with experience in game engines, gameplay programming, or the technical side of game development. I’m a developer myself, so I’d especially appreciate collaborators who can contribute technically and exchange ideas.
  • 2D artists and / or Game designers : Pixel artist, illustrators, character designers, environment artists, or animators who would like to help establish the game’s visual identity.
  • Writers and / or Narrative designers : People interested in worldbuilding, character development, dialogue, quests and interconnected storylines.
  • Music composers and / or Sound designers : People who would enjoy creating an original musical identity for a fantasy RPG, from atmospheric tracks to character themes and battle music.

You don’t need to fit perfectly into one category. Versatility is welcome, and having people who can contribute in several areas would be a plus.

A collaborative creative process

I don’t want this to be a project where one person makes every decision and everyone else simply executes instructions. I want everyone to have room to propose ideas, discuss mechanics, imagine characters, explore narrative possibilities, and contribute to the overall direction of the game.

For example, even if you aren’t an artist, you can suggest character concepts or sketch rough ideas. The artist can then develop the concepts that the team decides to pursue. Likewise, a programmer can contribute to narrative discussions, and a composer can help shape the atmosphere of a location or an important scene. Everyone would bring their own expertise, but creativity and constructive collaboration would be shared.

The broader fantasy universe has already been developed to some extent through a separate creative project. However, this RPG will take place in a different galaxy, with it’s own story and room for new ideas. The existing universe provides a starting point for consistency, not a script that everyone must follow blindly.

What stage is the project at ?

This is an early-stage project. The main narrative, protagonist, gameplay details, and initial playble scope still need to be developed. I’m not looking for people to join a finished concept. I’m looking for collaborators who are genuiely interested in helping turn an ambitious idea into a real game.

The plan is to begin with achievable goals, experiment with gameplay and narrative ideas, and gradually work toward a playble version. The long term ambition is to release the game in Early Access and continue developing it toward a more complete release, but the scope and milestones will need to be defined realistically with the team.

Commitment and expectations

I’m looking for people who are genuinely interested in contributing, communicating regularity, sharing ideas, and making progress together.

You don’t need a huge portfolio or professional experience. Personal projects, experiments, enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to learn are all valuable.

At the same time, I want to be honest : This is not currently a paid position, and I cannot promise future income. Availability, responsibilities, ownership of contributions, and any potential future revenue-sharing arrangements would need to be discussed openly before we commit to a long-term collaboration. I’d rather build a small, compatible team that makes steady progress than gather a large group that loses interest after a few weeks.

Interested ?

If this sounds like the kind of project you’d enjoy helping build, feel free to leave a comment or contact me !

I’d love to hear a little about you, what you enjoy creating, your experience or current skills, and what kind of contribution you’d be interested in making. You don’t need to have everything figured out. Th point is to start a conversation, exchange ideas, and see whether we could build someting great together.

Thanks for reading !

This is a French-led project, but speaking French is not a requierement to join the team ! However, being able to speak French would be a plus.

Nelson ;D

Hi Nelson, I saw you're looking for gameplay programmers for your 2D fantasy RPG, and the turn-based combat system sounds like a fun thing to build from the ground up. I'm a gameplay programmer working in Godot and Unity, and I led a six-person Godot team. I run ThirdAngle (hence the account) and also take programming contracts. Is this a paid role, and which engine are you planning to use? If it sounds like a fit, feel free to reach out.

Hi Thanks for reply me.

I’d like to clarify a few points regarding the game engine. I don’t really plan on using a standard game engine. I’m currently developing my own editor, which will eventually evolve into a custom game engine. However, I can’t rely solely on my editor to handle the project’s needs at this stage. So, naturally, I’ll be using external tools ; specifically Tiled for map management. I might consider switching to Unreal Engine if the need arises.

Of course, this is an unpaid collaboration proposal. It’s not that I fail to recognize the value of potential partners, but simply because I have absolutely no investors or funding for this project. That said, if the project eventually generates revenue, everyone will receive their share.

I hope this answers your questions.

Thanks again!

Nelson :)

Hi Nelson! Your Idea is interesting, really would like to know what style you are sticking with. Sadly, I don’t speak French, but I’m from EU and atleast we kinda got similar timezones :3

I don’t really use any game engine, because i love experimenting with graphics from low level. I’m ready to learn if any game engines in use. so… yeah :P

Wanna highlight my “Framework”, which is not completed but still working as intended.

Hi ! Thanks for your interest.

I haven’t decided on the visual style yet. I have a few options in mind that align with the vision for the project, but I’d prefer to make the final decision together with those who join the adventure.

As for French ; that was never a requirement, so no worries there !

Regarding the game engine, nothing has been chosen yet. If one ends up being necessary for the project, I would lean toward Unreal ; but only as a temporary solution. Ultimately, I intend to work with my own custom-built engine (currently in development).

Thanks for the framework suggestion ; I’ll consider whether it might be a good fit for the project.

I’m adding you on Discord under the name “Kairos”.

Looking forward to learning more !

Hi Nelson! This project sounds very exciting and I would love to help as your narrative designer and writer. I am an emerging writer with an academic background in medieval literature, as well as a huge enthusiast in fantasy. I am based in the U.S but have done previous game projects with international teams without any scheduling trouble.

Hi ! Thanks for getting back to me.

A medieval specialization could be very useful, especially if you’ve also mastered the fantasy genre. However, the project I’m working on isn’t strictly medieval-focused—just something to keep in mind.

I’m adding you on Discord under the name “Kairos”.

Looking forward to discussing this further with you.

Nelson ;)

Hey Nelson! This sounds like an interesting project, I want to help with shaping the distinct turn-based combat system. I can also help out with game programming if the team needs it. Please check out my page on here if you're interested!

Hi ! Thanks for your proposal.

I’d be happy to define the scope with you.

I’m adding you on Discord under the name “Kairos”.

Looking forward to continuing the conversation.

Nelson :)

Hi, not planning to join the project myself but as a solo dev who’s also been working on a 2D fantasy RPG with its own editor I’d be happy to offer technical advice if you run into trouble along the way. I’m not always going to have the time or be in a state of health where I can respond, but if that sounds like something you’d find helpful feel free to poke me.

I’m huguesross on Discord.

Good luck putting the team together! For the music and sound side, I made a free site where you can browse composers and sound designers and hear their stuff: https://composerscout.com
