Very ambitious scope, turn based strategy is a hard genre to tackle in such a short time. I liked the echolocation mechanic, and the idea that you can lock down enemies by finding and staring at them.
That being said, to me it felt like I needed more than one frog with offensive skills, or at the very least some way to display/manipulate the turn order.
Still, very impressive for 9 days, good job!
I didn't get how the theme connected but it was a cool idea. Like fire emblem. The problem was that if theunicorn died u were cooked.
The explorer frog has the only real way to track the Mothmen in the darkness, which is an echolocation croak, which brings back a sonar ping signal.
We had originally intended for more than just combat goals, and the first level was intended to be the post tutorial level, where you were going to run to an escape area... sadly we ran out of time, and where the death victory conditions still worked for the final map (checking on the king's health vs the moth's health) that didn't really work for the fist map where you could get in a slow-painful-loss condition once the Unicorn Frog was downed.
Having played so many turn based strategy games (X-Com, Battle Brothers, Menace, Xenonauts, Phoenix Point) I'm still ashamed I've never checked out any of the Fire Emblem series.
Dylan and I played the game and really enjoyed the concept of an attack-and-move strategy game. It was an interesting idea, and we had fun exploring the different mechanics. However, it took us a little while to understand each frog’s unique abilities.
Feedback: Consider introducing each frog and its abilities through a tutorial level. This would help players better understand what each frog can do and how to use their abilities effectively. :)
Oh, completely agree -- We had planned for two more levels (1 tutorial, and one mid-level between first and king level) but just ran out of time (another project had 16 hours of bugs show up on Saturday). I tried to jam in what I could with text in the game's web page, but nothing can really replace a tutorial and decent tooltips (even have the text for tooltips in game, just never managed to get them hooked up before the deadline).
Froggycorn 😍 was a bit hard that you can have only one character that is able to attack and the king is a bit risky to put at the front. Nice game
Are we allowed to swap between frogs? I'm not seeing any controls options? The frogs and tileset look gorgeous!
The frogs are gorgeous, we got them from here: https://kelano-studio.itch.io/wild-frogs
All the units (both frog and moth) take turns entering their orders. You give two orders to a frog, then the next unit goes (exceptions being that the King only gets to do one thing per turn, and the Spotter frog is speedy and can do three things a turn)
Cool! Thanks for the explanation. After that I was able to play much better
