Pretty fun game! I like the art, but cant seem to get enough Candy to beat the game. Its really fun though.
Hi PK-Mace8,
Hehehe, thank you very much for playing the game! Your game is also great, I really enjoyed it.
Others have said it before, I liked the minigame having an impact on the rest of the game! I don't know what fleeing or pleading does, I didn't really try those options as no clear benefit is presented for those options in the tutorial section. I like how you made different sprites for the talking hat as it speaks, it makes the game feel more alive! :)
Seeing as you mentioned quite a few youtube tutorials in your game page, I take it that you are at the beginning of your game dev journey, so welcome aboard, and well done for an impressive first game! I genuinely had fun playing it.
Hi Quertie,
Thank you for giving the game a try!! I really appreciate your kind words. Like I said in one of the comments below, the turn-based mechanic is, if I be honest, extremely unbalanced right now. I probably will make some adjustments to that in the future (not some time soon, 'cuz I am having another project on my plate). But yeah, I did aware of this when the game was still in-dev, so I tried to make those options seemed appealing as much as possible, like cutting the candy cost or making the description "eye-catching", but it seems like my plan does not work as I expected. However, to jam is to learn and I have gotten loads of invaluable feedback from you and other fellow jammers here to plan for some of the improvements for the game.
Sorry for being to wordy here, anw again, thanks for playing the game!!!
P/: This, infact, is not my first game, but instead my first GameMaker game. I have had a little of coding fundamentals under my belt so I could get familiar with the IDE or coding environment pretty quickly. However, other GameMaker tools like Sprite Drawing, Music, and especially the turn-based genre itself was a real challenge for me because I have never worked on any of those things, so yeah those tutorials really helped me a lot along the way.
Concept: cool, I really like turn based RPGs like this, the story's also very nice.
Gameplay: I like how of the starting minigame determines the budget you work with for the rest of the game. I feel like the turn based combat is not deep enough though, I made it through the entire game with only using the attack option, defend just didn't really feel useful at all, especially since you can't see you what your enemies do.
Art: it's pretty good, has a good style to it and it feels consistent all throughout.
Audio: the music nice, though it's lacking some sfx.
Nice little game overall.
Hello Pff,
Thank you very much!!! I really appreciate your comment. The lack of sfx was intentional because I "accidentally" left the soundtrack choosing part until the very end of the development period, so as a result, I did not have enough time for the sfx anymore and I had to cut it out of the list. hahahahah dont be like me :)
Great game! I had to try a couple times, but I finally got past Grimble. He's tough! I really the idea of having a skill-based minigame to start that dictates how well you'll do in battle. The art is super charming and fits really well. The story-telling is also really well done. I feel like it invites the player to wonder and imagine a bit about the player character and the world. Really well done!
(Also, I'm going to check out those tutorials you posted. After playing this, I'm sure I can learn some more about using GM.)
Hi BenignChaos,
Congratulations!!!! Hahahah thank you very much for putting the effort to beat the devil out of Grimble. He is real tough, yeah, even I could not beat him in one of my playtestings. Those tutorials that I cited are specifically about turn-based, so if you want to make smt similar to those, you are more than welcome to check them out. But if you are aiming to make smt else, I believe the official GM channel also does provide all kind of vids for beginners, and other channels as well. So yeah, try them all out and see what fits you the best.
Thank you very much for playing the game!!!
I have been thinking about trying a turn-based game, so I think they'll be useful resources. I really like the official GameMaker yt channel. I've learned a lot from their videos and even the little quizzes they post.
I really enjoy this kind of gameplay! Unfortunately I couldn't beat Grimble even though I tried different options! Good game!
Hi Katsun96,
Thank you for playing the game!! I am glad that you like it.
I think my comment didnt get post it's strange, i'll rewrite it:
Funny little game, i really love the art it has it's own charm and i love it !!
I couldnt beat Grimble bc i didnt have enough candies tho (im not used to qwerty keyboards)
Hiiii Martninn,
You really made me rethink of my decision. Should have gone to Art instead, CS has been really toughed these days. Just kidding, hahhh. Anw, thank you for checking the game out. I really poured my soul into every single line of those sprites, heheheheh.
SPOILER!!!!!!!
Grimble is the hardest boss to beat tho, especially when your candy count is low. Wait, with my settings, will it ever be high?? :(
ahahah yea i figured this was the hardest but i want to now what's after but i cant manage to get more candies
Good job with the game! Didn't run into any issues and knew what to do. Sometimes that's the hardest part of making a game and you did it well.
Helloo Splashy Inc.,
First of all, thank you very much for taking the time trying out the game! I really appreciate it. Well, making smt finished, playable, and polished was my ultimate goal when joining this jam, seriously. That is the hardest lesson that I learned from my previous jam. Our team, we got a few feedback from fellow jammers about not knowing what to do or going into dead ends mid-game, so they have no ways but to exit the game and try again. The game was not bad tho, infact, I or we were pretty proud of what we were able to make during that jam. Its just we really did not have very much time to actually polish the game in the way we wanted. So yeah, literally did not want to repeat the mistakes, so I spent extra extra hours to playtest, playtest and playtest, all over again to make sure that, at any point when I ran out of time, the game had to be always ready to be released. And reading your comment made me feel like those hours were extremely worth it.
P/S: Well, at least not the turn-based balancing. That... that is another story, its purely my experience issue with this genre :(
Cool game! Cool mix of genres. The bowl thing at the beginning reminded me of a minigame in my game. Please feel free to rate my game as well :)
Hiiii ottermadness,
Thank you very much for playing the game! and absolutely, I will definitely check it out!!!

I liked the story and how it changes gameplay. I either was not fast enough with my drum beating or what, but I felt as though I never had enough candy, and the scarecrow was never impressed with me pleading for my life lol. A little difficult because of that, but I do love a good turned based game, and the vibes fit well with your artwork!
Hi Schnazzy,
Its great to hear that you have enjoyed the game so far. I really appreciate you spending time playing it and leaving kind words. And ahahah dont worry, it is totally because of my STUPIDLY BAD mechanic balancing. For flee and plea options, the successful chance is pretty low (maybe I should do something about that in the future) so most of the time, those options do not really work until it works :) what am I saying. Btw, yeah maybe I can make a little adjustment in the combat stuff in the future.
P/S: the minigame is called tapping bowl or bowl tapping or whatever, I dont really know its name either. I based it off one of the ghost-seeing methods in a Thai horror-comedy called The Eyes 10 (one of my fav childhood movies), because it is a Halloween festival after all, what you be doing if not all the spooky stuff, right?
Thank you Schnazzy!!!
This is a neat little game with a lot of charm! It's cool to see different game-modes combined like this. And I personally really like the artwork and retro style! Thanks for jamming with us :)
Heheh. Hi Theo,
Thank you very much for playing the game! There should have been so much more of the contents to put in there, but 48h did really tie my hands behind my back and I had to spend time for the best things so yeah, this version is all I got. Ummm.... for the artstyle, well... honestly, it was not intentional. I am not an artist so I dont really know how to draw. I just happened to "draw" smt, place it and call it a day. And, turned out drawing pixel art was SUPER fun and the results was good too. I found myself always came back to it whenever I was fed up with debugging the code.
Anw, thank you for leaving some kind words for the game!!!
Fun game with lots of content to it! I played for quite a while.
Well done for listing everything you used and including the tutorials you followed! Great job.
I think you picked your music appropriately, and the storyline is engaging and funny.
Thanks for joining our jam!
Oh my gosh, hi Chloe!!!
I have been constantly checking for comments on my game and finally got one. Thank you very much for playing the game! I really appreciate your kind words. I had to cut off a lot of things to meet the jam deadline but no worries, I will continue working on it in the future (if I have time :) ).
This game was my first time using Gamemaker so tutorials were always a must. Sleepless nights on how to adjust them to fit my game, but the effort did really pay off.
Again, thank you very much!! This is my first Spooky 2D Jam, and I am sure I will be joining it again.
