Yup 💀

I've added a whole lot of new features and polish now

Yeahh lol, it's been wild

I've only had to cut two major corners, and if I don't have time to fix those when the time is almost up, that just proves that it was necessary.

First corner I cut was accidentally making the train sprite too big. That resulted in me just sizing it down instead of redrawing it smaller and doing all the animations from scratch, which led to a wonky look of that specific sprite

Second is that I just don't really have time to polish my particle effects yet, but it's a pixel art game, so square particles look enough at home

I got unlucky ;-;

Got half of what I needed to do today done and then got stuck for hours fixing a game breaking bug that seems to have been caused by Godot sometimes renaming things when nodes are reparented

But hey, I got a shop mechanic working, added new items, added a new functional type of item class, added train stations that the train automatically stops at every x amount of units, and now I just gotta give the train stations their functional purpose, which includes NPCs, which means I can finally start adding in the theme and half of the main gameplay, at day 4...

In my experience, "I think I can cram it into one day" ends up taking 2-3 days 🥀

I'm already expecting having to sacrifice less important features I wanted, like a color swap shader for player character customization

I may have time for the shader, but it's near useless without a menu to control it.

What if you make a game where you walk in a crowd of NPCs and a few of them pull up a pistol or shiv if you get too close?

Aesthetic could be very noir and shadowy with the player being a pure white or red color, making them stand out and easier to locate

Would probably work well to have a few levels all with a new crowd layout, so it might be a remembering game or similar

Not using the idea so you can have it if you want

I'm personally really stoked! I might even finish the majority of the gameplay loop today! Assuming I'm not unlucky atleast

No, I didn't start working on art or sound. And yes, the gameplay loop has taken me 3 days so far lol

Will likely have to add the element for the theme either tonight or tomorrow

Remember to stay hydrated and take breaks!

Feel free to share your excitement about your projects so long as you're not giving away the whole game idea!

Sort of had the idea a few hours before the theme was voted in

It happened to work perfectly with this theme and one other

Can't wait to submit the final result! Assuming I finish in time that is 😬

I make everything from pixel art to code and sfx myself lol

I added a mechanic for the player character to basically be burnt to ash. So in a way, we're the same... 😌

It happens. Game development takes time, even during game jams! Hell, you feel even slower when you're in a hurry.

Good luck with that! The hard ones to implement are usually the most fun when they're worth the effort(or something like that)

You guessed right lol

Although the controls are slightly wonky as I plan on adding couch co-op to further follow the theme(if I have time), so you don't exactly aim with the mouse but rather just how the character is facing. I might change that for singleplayer if I release on steam

Tomorrow I might finally be able to start following the theme as I've sort of finished all the other important stuff

This was end of day 1 lol

End of day 2 progress

Feels like I'm going at a snail's pace when I'm in the zone, but then I see the end of day progress logs and get my mind blown

Just ignore the visual artifacts and the train cabin that was obviously scaled down in a hurry. We're all on a deadline, so it's to be expected lol

The shop UI probably won't be staying for any longer than it takes me to make a better alternative tbh

Thanks! Way too much time spent scratching my head over the weirdest most enigmatic game-breaking bugs tho x.x

Yeah, I feel ya. Same issue here!

I'll personally make the menu last. It's always good to prioritize core gameplay features in game-jams as you never know how close you'll be cutting it

I've been there, believe me. Still sometimes get stuck there! Also, progress is good! Finally have something more than just a pick-up and throw mechanic, and it's starting to look more and more like a proper game every hour!

Thank you!

The thing I do is to just rid myself completely of any competitive spirit
I acknowledge that the best thing about game jams is what you learn along the way, and that way I'm not even all that bummed if I don't finish on time, and even if I am, I'm not too stressed about the deadline. Hope this helps!

Huge upgrade from the first image lol

How are other projects progressing? Everyone in high spirits?

Pretty much my view on the theme yeah

In the end I feel like this theme improved my game idea by a lot tho(instead of the opposite), so I'm happy!

I don't even know where I'd start with one

It was one of the 3 themes that worked with a gameplay loop I wanted to make, so I'm not unhappy. Would've preferred "Alternative Uses" tho, truth be told.

I'm having luck, but who's to say if it's good luck? 😭

Best of luck to y'all tho

Also

So much panic-induced spaghetti coding 🥲

But damn I'm gonna be busy

I just hope I can finish it all before next sunday fr

How's everyone else doin'?

Or is it an inherent disadvantage when it comes down to voting?

You too!

If you barely know how to use godot, that's even more of an excuse to try the gamejam out! The no. 1 reason for joining game jams is to learn and improve!

Pro tip from someone who's been doing this a while:

Don't skip learning shaders. Took me way too long to realise how important they were.

I wish you the best of luck! I still remember my first game jam. It was probably over half a decade ago now.

I feel ya. I'm so rusty that I had to look up how to export my projects into web format... I'm so cooked! 😭

10 years of coding experience, and for what? 💀

Yeah no problem at all! I understand how it all feels aswell.
