How to gain followers and promote my games.

I have seen some developer profiles that have 1k+ followers and their content is just a few projects and not very interesting.

I've made some games that I think are fun and that should interest at least 100 people on itch.io.

My problem is that I can't get followers. Followers are the first people who find your content when you publish it.

I only have 3 followers.

It seems that the "most played" and "featured" games steal all the attention and leave small developers in the background.

So my question is: How to get followers who receive my content, without my projects being "most played" or "featured"?

Thanks in advance

Advertise outside itch.io, obviously. You're not supposed to rely on local traffic anyway, and organic traffic is a lot more effective. Use social media. Whatever else you can.

Also post more in the community, because people can't know you exist if you're silent.

i just made a patreon but idk how to use it

About the last point (posting in the community) I guess it's more complicated for those who make nsfw content....

I don't mean to advertise your game. Simply talk to people. They'll want to know who you are, so they'll click through to see what you make.

yes, I've realized that and I'm coming out of the cave....

One question, if it's not too much trouble, is it possible to ask for feedback for nsfw content in the “get feedback” category?

Good question, you should make a separate topic.

To you. They are not interesting to you. A thousand people have a different opinion than you about this. Also, you do not know for which of the projects the accounts got followed to be notified of updates. Of course some follow to get notified for new games as well. But this ain't youtube. You do not need to post dozens of games to get followers.

and that should interest at least 100 people on itch.io

That will neither give you 100 followers nor 100 ratings. It might give you 100 page views. And maybe 10 plays, half a comment and half a rating. There is some thread here where people posted statistics.

To put it into perspective, I know games that are on Steam and have literally thousands of reviews, but on Itch they have less than 10 ratings. The account is older and managed to accumulate a whopping 100+ followers over time.

It seems that the "most played" and "featured" games steal all the attention

Makes you wonder how they got on those lists. Especially the popular ranking. You seem to think that this is like youtube. Post one video game, get 10 followers. Post the next video game get 5 more and get views from the previous followers. Post the next video game and get even more followers to catapult your next game on top of popular games.

While it is obvious that an account with 1000 followers will get some initial boost for posting a new game, I do not see this mechanic happening very much. At least not on the popular games. Maybe it happens with the accounts that have 20 games and 20 followers. But if you look on top of the lists, you will find that many might have like 3 games and 1000 followers.

I just looked at a popular account with 12000 followers. The hit game on that account has about 1000 ratings. But there is also a game on that account that only has some 20 ratings.

So my opinion is, while followers might help, the game itself is more important.

that was the answer I was looking for . thanks

Hmm. Ok. Mind that this is only opinion. Other people might think different or have experienced or observed it differenty.

But you can go to it backwards. Search similar games to your games - by topic (tags, description) and level of professionalism. Then take the most successful ones. And try to guess why they are successful. Can you find their promotions? Was it social media? Did a famous youtuber promote it? Does it look like they slowly gained followers and the game just accumulated popularity over the years? Is Itch just another outlet, and their main audience is elsewhere?

There is some kind of feedback loop evident on the comments of some popular games on Itch. Unknown youtubers make videos about the game and post on the comment section. It is hard to tell which is the chicken and which is the egg in those cases.

It seems like a good strategy to me. thank you

**"My friend, I am like you, but I have 0 followers despite developing Minecraft 2D and Super Duck and many moooooooore... 😊"**

So many projects. Why 0 following?

**"Maybe I am still a beginner or not very good at English because I am Arabic."**

English doesn't matter. I saw japanese developers. I think we should learn marketing before promoting something

Participating in a gamejam is a great way to get some followers. Make sure at the end of a gamejam to play and rate as many submissions as you can and leave a positive constructive comment.

Makes sens

gamjams don't do much.

I disagree:

FYI the jam had just 7 entries. https://codergenius72.itch.io/dualspace

what type of game is it?

and how'd you get that popular so fast from ONE game jam with 5 people? I'll put my game Gerbils in the Juniper dev jam with 10.7k people and hope.

you don't even have a website.

Dang.

The jam was only the 23 view one. Also I was surprised that the game did so well in the jam where 10 people joined

The jam was /jam/dis-may-2026-feedback-jam/entries

The jams seem based on luck, and it placed my game in #1 popular for no reason.

Another jam that I did better in, Sprint 13, with ~20 people only gave me 11 views, even though I placed #1 overall

The game was originally made for Brackeys Game Jam 2026.1 with ~9k people but only ~60 views came from it.

Dualspace is a puzzle game.

What I want to know is why did /t/6398595/mnus-three-plus give me almost 50 views?

The game that the person was advertising does not even exist.

I made a game and posted it on a game jam but i still have 0 followers over like 3+ months, are maze games just too niche of a genra??

You have to promote your game in social media. itch.io does not do that for you

I have no social media.

You need them

I disagree once again

I use reddit.com for promotion but itch.io still makes up much of my views. They are still important but itch.io  can still do a lot for your game if you use it right.

It works once your game received some traffic from Reddit or itch.io did promote your game from the beginning?

It requires mostly active marketing, but not so much external traffic. I have not seen people say the tags help until ~20k views. The community and game jams are providing me the most views. My strategy is to provide feedback on others games, and then ask for feedback for mine. This works ~70% of the time. /t/6398595/mnus-three-plus is my 2nd best referer somehow.

I actually tried relying on reddit.com for my first ~1250 views on r/freegamefindings. It helped, but these users were very unengaged. Those first users have ~10% browser plays and <0.1% rated. For the most recent ~650, I now have ~4.5% Raters and ~40% browser plays.

Interesting about Reddit. Those new stats (40% browser plays, 4.5% raters) are actually really healthy though.

Since this was necroed anyway...

I only have 3 followers.

Close to a hundred now. Your efforts seemed to have worked. Now you can give advice from actual experience :-)
