How does your game fit the theme?
So a doodle's story fits the theme "outside the box" both literally and thematically. Doodle is a draft character who was never meant to exist in "The Legend of Transformation". They've just wandered their broken level and glitched into a finished game. Not being from the world they "broke into," Doodle can't properly interact with the environment, glitch the game's system transitions, and fundamentally change what the game was supposed to be just by taking the place of Nox, our hero.

I have a ton of ideas on how to continue this idea (like taking inspo for Inscription and having the player uncover hidden files, documents, and artifacts scattered throughout the game world that slowly reveal the real world outside. Who owns this copy of The Legend of Transformation? What does their life look like? and how Doodle's existence is affecting things beyond the screen.)

But basically, to summarize. The "box" in our case is the game itself. its rules, its intended story, its finished state. Doodle is outside all of that.

Hope you have fun, and give me your honest feedback! <3

(Also, a side note! I do really want to continue this project, but depending on how this jam goes, I may or may not continue. SO that means if you want to help/be a part of this project and join the deranged solo dev, feel free to contact me!)

This is a really cool concept. The ability to swap between characters on the fly, and their mechanics being functionally different is such a unique idea. I really enjoyed the artwork, and the story was intriguing. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here!

Add more motion into the game -> example:

If player do no input -> currently there is almost static image (not so good)

To fix this there are some options I would recommend to consider:

1 ... animated full screen shader

2 ... wind

3  ... fullscreen particle effect (rain is good example)

4 ... more animated map elements

5 ... camera movement by slow margin (like small slow shake)

I really like the switch mechanic! It reminds me almost of Mario Odyssey or Nobody Saves the World. I think my only real note is to be careful of mixels in the art, good job!

The switching between doodle and hero form is a cool mechanic. Everything feels polished. Very good job

This game is awesome! The visuals and animation were phenomenal, and I'm super interested to see where this goes. Nice job!

Woah this is cool as hell man the animations are BEAUTIFUL?!?!?! The character swapping gimick is rlly cool aswell and the book animations were legit mesmerising to watch (i seriously was just flicking back n forth for about a minutes its so damn smooth) . Pls Continue on this theres SO MUCH MORE POTENTIAL MAN KEEP GOING WIT IT!!!

This is really cool!! Though admittedly I felt a little aimless at times, though that’s definitely just a me issue I think? Not sure, but regardless it is absolutely gorgeous, and is really well done honestly

This was a pretty fun game to play though. I really like the idea of switching between different characters in order to do different things. I think you should continue this project, there's a lot of potential here.

Very neat little demo. I wish I could see what else you had planned since the premise of the game seemed very interesting, but I think getting something done was a massive accomplishment in and of itself!

The artwork is really cool, would love to see this expanded in the future :)

Web build had a weird issue with constant flickering, so I tried the download and that had a weird issue with it defaulting to displaying in windowed at a higher resolution than any of my monitors, so i had to right-click the application in my taskbar and move it with the arrow keys to click fullscreen and have it be playable.

The game was fun once I got into it, though. I really enjoy the concept of turning into different forms to do different platforming sections, and it had similar vibes to Drawn To Life, which I adore. I think the sound design could use some work (namely with the transforming process just not having any sound), and things feel a bit floaty all around, but it's a really neat idea and a fun, short and sweet demo.

Oh, that's super weird. I will admit the downloads are probably not the best... (as I have almost no experience with that), but the constant flickering with the web is new. Would you be down to let me know what browser you're on? (and thanks for your feedback!)

I'm on Firefox on Windows 11

possibly a skill issue but i couldn't for the life of figure out how to kill the third skeleton, got him to stand up though! Either way, its clear the music and art in this game were beautiful, and it felt very polished and made with love - the dialogue windows, the environment, the enemies and npcs, really really well done and could easily see more of it - also the 'really?' on the right side of the map got me xD

Try exploring the library and the tutorial island :D

Perhaps it's the jetlag, but what are you supposed to do? Talk to the robot, teleporter doesn't work?

Developer

Have you tried interacting as doodle?

Submitted

Oh I see you can switch back

This is stunning. (I have literally no idea how you made the visual glitch effect at the beginning in Godot)

Not to mention the incredibly polished tile and sprite work, I really do think you should continue this! I think the gameplay was buggy at times (I somehow managed to make the characters moonwalk (????)) but never in a way that made the experience bad! I think the music was very decent and fit well, the sound design was great most of the time (the exception being I would prefer a delay in the follow up sound to match the swords swing, unless that wasn't the intent) I also really liked the idea of swapping characters to use the teleportation, or get to places that the others can't.

Overall though, this is really cool! Great Job!

Thanks for the compliments and feedback! The SFX and animation bug are fixed in the most recent version, but it slipped by me in the game jam version T-T

Submitted(+1)

It's cool, there's interesting mechanics and the art is very well done, my game kept bugging out after killing the third skeleton and I couldn't interact with anything, but it's a cool game with a good concept!

Developer

Oh, weird, I've never run into that with playtesting. If you could let me know what you mean by "not being able to interact with anything" (like, can you still move, did you do anything other than just killing the third skelly, etc.), I'd love to know.

Submitted

I could move and attack, I could not interact with doors for example

Developer

Interesting... I've never had that happen. There is a debug reset scene with R, so try that, but I'm sorry to hear you ran into what seems to be a big underlying bug

This is cool wowzas

Developer

Thank you!

Really fun game, I can't play too much of it as I am terrible at platformers, but I really really liked this one, cool mechanics and just a good time, I will play more later to try and not suck

Developer

Thank you, hope you beat it!

In all seriousness, this is a lovely looking game with lots of potential for a full release!

Developer(+1)

Muahahaha! And thank you for the kind words. I'm working on a dev log, and I plan to make a full demo to see if there's interest.
