I've kept the lovely format of RPG Maker MZ vanilla entirely, as I believe a good game can still come out of the basics. Around half of the character arts (Faith, Tay, Howard, Present, and many more) were fully designed and drawn by me through Aseprite. Other characters were modeled through Perchance but then altered through my own lens and updated to best fit the game. This is my first official game and I hope you like it. Please feel free to give me feedback, constructive or not! The full game is very close to release!

its a pretty cool game, i like the setting and aesthetic of it. the story with the kid with the teddy bear and his parents is kinda sad :(. i think the sprites and art is very charming, and the notes are also mysterious. maybe make the key to the locked room a little easier to find too cause most people probably wouldn't check that random drawer. also using ai for characters is a little controversial but its up to you to decide. overall though i think its cool and id wanna play the full release

Developer(+1)

I appreciate you taking the time to check out the White Tiles demo, and leaving an insightful response of your impression. I will say there is plenty more "sad" coming in this seemingly light hearted game. I try my best with the sprite art and the head shots, though this game is my first experience with pixel art work, so it's been quite the learning process. Because you directly mention it, I'll make the key easier to find! I prefer no AI because it owns connotations that I didn't put the effort I truly did into making this game, and for that I feel you all deserve something a bit organic. The game is genuinely so close to it's completion, as in within the week, and I look forward to what you think of it!

yo within a week? thats sick. even if it takes longer thats fine art is a thing that takes time. if the key (or other objects like that) isnt required to beat the main story i think having it somewhat hidden like that is a cool reward for exploration.  edit: i just realized the full game already released lol ill go play that right now

ok so ive been playing the full release and so far its been sick, i really love the relationship between faith and tay. the humor in this game is actually pretty funny unlike most games ive played. but it is a little confusing to know what to do next. i just finished exploring tays village, i went into all the houses (besides locked door in the back) and climbed to the top of the inn and now i can leave the village but i dont know where to go next. also i thought the game ended at hitherto in the demo cause i didnt realize walking on the cracked dirt would take me to the next room. so another suggestion would just be to have indicators like the rug in the alcohol house in the village as to what tile will make you leave that room. but what am i supposed to do right now after going through tays village T-T

Developer

I'm really glad you appreciate my type of humor! There is far more to explore, the game will have a credit scene play if you ever reach one of the seven endings possible, as to notify you when it finishes. I apologize for the confusion on where to go next at times, it's hard to know what a new player experiences as I have "expert blindness" for my own game and never used friends to test run it. Once you finish the Kant village arc, you will want to back track, see if you can explore things you didn't have access to before (such as the well, hint hint). I really advise you do EVERYTHING you can at all times, especially in the village, because that's how you get secret items which will change the game and it's trajectory. If nothing seemingly progresses you, go back to "the center of everything" where Present remains, and that will more often than not continue progress. If you still find yourself stuck, I'll be as attentive as I can to the White Tiles discussion board.

sorry for asking so many questions lol but i still cant find the well. im wondering if theres a glitch cause when i exit hitherto from the bottom exit it takes me straight to kaunt village. are you supposed to end up at the path in between the two places where there was the cutscene thing right before entering kaunt village? cause i cant go back to that area with the snow and stuff

Developer(+1)

That section with the cutscenes between 'kant village' and 'road end' is supposed to disappear after the first interaction, so no glitch, just making it quicker for travel. The well in 'hitherto' has a locked gate door on the left side. To access the door, you need to get the key, to get the key, you must speak with T.E.M 14 (bottom left of Kant village), and beat him at gambling three times. This should allow further progress for you!

Side note: I'm keeping track of all these confusing points mentioned so that I can implement a more player friendly version for future updates, so keep the questions coming!

(+1)

i have to beat him at gambling 3 times T-T ive already lost 6 times and i only have 200 gold left :( i guess i gotta go to the girl who gives me 1 gold every time i talk to her. i would recommend changing that part though because first off theres nothing that hints that he gives you the key as far as i know and second off if you get unlucky you run out of money and theres nothing you can do besides go to the 1 gold girl which gets annoying unless theres some other way to get money.

Developer(+1)

This is something I overlooked entirely. For some reason I assumed that the gambling game would be addicting and therefore cause someone to play it at least three times knowing they'd win money... but that was naive of me. The infinite coin girl was the last resort option so players weren't forced into resetting their run, but without me needing to implement a free mini game or mob killing area. I chose one coin each time so it wasn't worth using it to grind for the shop items... idk what I was thinking at the time. I will come up with something to improve this for future players!

(+1)

some more thoughts as im playing: i realized the robot guy actually isnt luck cause the color isnt random every time, but if you spent too much money on items you might not have enough money without having to grind for it. i just saved and reloaded my save if i got it wrong lol. also when i went into the well i chose to kill the guy cause i felt like it but i didnt realize there was a campfire to rest at so when i died i was outside of the well and i couldnt get back in which basically soft locked me so i couldnt progress. i reloaded a save so it was fine but i would make sure you can go back in the well until you talk to the statue in the next room. the part where you go down the ladder after going south from the center of everything and playing the game where you talk to the people was lowkey funny. the dialogue in this game is so goated. also the part after with all the white clouds is cool and the doors with the messages with backstory. the combat is fun too it reminds me of ff7.

Developer(+1)

Correct, not randomized for the gambling for players who want to get all endings, they can still have some speed run ability. As you discovered, saving the game for rewinding progress is genuinely one of the most powerful things available for a player, I feel I should find a way to emphasize that fact more. Good to know about the killing Malice soft lock, I'll have a way to force the campfire activation before further dialogue. I tried a lot with all of dialogues and their possible versions to make a game that's engaging, humorous, and serious when it needs to be. There is a lot of intentional lore in this game as well, and often times there will be conflicts in the story line. This is because... not everyone is telling truth, at least, not all of it.

the thing about some people lying is actually cool, ive thought about making a game where people act like they do in real life instead of how they act in most video games. like a character could suggest you do something like go to a temple to find an object but there was actually nothing there cause they thought wrong. or like you said the story has conflicts because some people either lied or thought they knew the truth but it was actually wrong.

Developer(+1)

Absolutely, just as I try to make the humor semi-organic, I want to make dialogue organic as well. There should be a sense of realism in games if you want it to feel more realistic, and to do so, you require some sort of deception. The world doesn't always tell the truth so why should the games? I think pursuing that system in your upcoming games and other artforms in the future would be a great touch that's extremely underrated.

yes bro thats exactly what i was thinking, dialogue in movies and games these days feels so forced and unnatural.

yo i just beat the game it was actually sick even though i got whats probably considered a bad ending. i got the one where

spoilers (click to view)

tay and harmony were petrified and i ended up in hell with that other guy. its also cool how harmony is lvl 99 when she joins you. i like how the game is just so random too. like you walk down a path and you end up in the cosmos or whatever. present was a really cool character and i liked the lore of the game. it reminds me a little of omori if youve ever played that game. but i wonder if this world is actually a dream and maybe tay is his younger sister. i assume you could find more lore getting other ending. i also cant tell if present is actually evil or good. i might try to get some of the other endings another time. the music was also quite lovely.

anyone reading this you should play this game cuz its cool

(+1)

oh i also just rewatched the first scene when you start the game and it makes way more sense

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

You are the first person to reach an ending in the White Tiles official release! Thank you for your helpful feedback and for being my last bit of inspiration to finish this never ending project. The ending you got was one of my first and it even changes based on whether you manage to kill Malice before or not. I put lots of time and effort into this game, and though I'm no game developer expert by any means, it's fire that the vision was still able to become something real. This game is supposed to mimic Faiths reality, so your "dream" theory is really intuitive. You play as Faith, and the things you see and experience are through the lens of Faith as well. This is why different paths can change different game interactions and maps, etc.

lol sweet lets go. is it actually possible to kill malice? cause i kept doing 0 damage and he would like 2 shot me. i wanted to support this though cause im kinda trying to do the same thing. i just started trying to make video games 6 months ago using gamemaker and i understand the passion of wanting to create something that impacts people like major indie games like undertale/deltarune or celeste if you’ve played those. i started making an rpg but i got to the fight system and it was really hard to code so i started with a platformer that’s a little easier. using gamemaker over rpg maker is a little harder cause you have to code a lot more in gamemaker i believe so im trying to learn to code, make music and art, etc. it’s lowkey a lot of work now that i start and maybe theres gonna be like 3 people who play my game but still i think it’s worth it cause i can bring my ideas to life in a game and it’s also fun. was this game inspired by anything like other games or movies?

Developer

I have gotten close to killing Malice before, because there are some RNG related parts to the combat system if you get the right equipment, but to be honest, I've never actually killed him and it's possible that he's undefeatable without extreme luck. I kinda wanted to see if a player would be able to do it and prove me wrong before I changed his in-game stats. I'm glad you're looking at making a game yourself, there's so much creativity that can be put into your own sanctified world, and I look forward to what you're able to come up with. I have played Celeste and I know of Undertale, and Omori, and many other indie/rpg maker games. It wasn't obvious when I first started making White Tiles, that to be a solo developer you've got to learn so many different skills such as art work, BGM, coding, logic systems, dialogue writing, character development, combat systems, and so, so much more. So it takes a lot of time and dedication to make the idea something real. My inspiration for this game was the game I made before it as a very bare bones skeletal version called 'Rail Roads' of which I never released publicly. But, apart from learning from other rpg games I've played, White Tiles appears to be mostly original, inspired by a little bit of everything, akin to nothing.

Make sure to let me know when you release your game(s), even if it's just a demo, I look forward to it.

the game im making right now was also an improved version of a game i was making in a coding class in high school using python. i do like making music and i was trying to learn how to draw so i realized all these things im trying to do can be used in video games so i just started making some. i think games are cool cause they’re like the ultimate form of art cause they have art music story etc. my game might be out in a few months or smthn idk lol you can also follow my page on itch if you wanna that might update you too.
