This is a really interesting game with a unique concept that relates well to the theme! I like the pixel art visuals a lot and found it fun to reap only the ripe souls. However, though it is intended for the character to move slowly, I would prefer if it was a bit less "choppy", as I have to hold a movement button for at least 1-2 seconds before the character starts sliding in that direction. Regardless, this is a great game with a lot of potential!

Supernice looking game with a very creative concept! The character moved a bit slow in my opinion, but I could also see the charm in having the character move like that. I also felt a bit stupid because I reapt the wrong souls my first playthrough, but I rewatched the opening cutscene for the instrtuction. maybe that could be said somehwere else as well? Other than that, very nice game!

Developer

Thank you! Maybe I'll put that in the game description, too, to make it harder to miss.

Aww, I really liked the art! Also the spinning was on point, slightly challenging, but I could get the hang of it.

Maybe the randomness (if it's random) could be tweaked a bit: sometimes I only had 8 ripe souls in a round, which meant I could only make one mistake. This meant that the second spin upgrade was quite a debuff as I was reaping everything. :D

Developer

Thank you! Yeah the randomness problem is noted. And you are the second person who didn't get value out of the spin upgrade so that's something to think about.

Very nice, love the art and audio. Took me a bit to figure out the best scythe movement, but was very fun. Great job!

Developer

Thank you!

Wow, it's incredible that you made a game in Pico 8. I think that the main mechanic is pretty interesting, having a spin that only harms enemies at a specific range, not too close nor too far, is an interesting concept. I did wish there was some music, but I straight up don't know if you can do that in Pico 8. Good job.

Developer

Thank you! You can actually make music in pico 8 but I couldn't figure out how to make something that sounds better than the silence so I left it out ;)

The spin took some getting used to, but it was a really nice little challenge trying to find the right timing / moving around to try to avoid the unripe souls.  Really fun little game loop, and the upgrades felt good, too.  The little animal sprites were super cute, too.  My only critique is that I feel like I wish that both the main character and the enemies moved a bit faster in general.  Oh, and maybe something to guarantee at least some number of good souls appear on each wave instead of pure RNG, since some of my waves I only saw ~5 good souls.  The sound was minimalist but good.  Would have loved some background music, but this is already quite a lot for a first solo jam.  I really enjoyed my time with it.  Nice work!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and for the feedback! The movement and the random enemy spawning seem to be the biggest issues for player so that is good to know for future improvements. Maybe I'll even figure out some music with a little more time.

weaving around souls is very satisfying! it would be interesting if the movement were a little less sluggish, so I can maneuver around the souls while spinning a bit easier! It is a concept that has a decent amount of depth to it

Developer

Thank you! I'll see if I can optimize the movement a bit.

The idea of the scythe spin is very creative and I liked how not all souls were ripe so you have to be careful and precise with which one you hit. A sound track would be nice but obviously time is limited.

Developer

Thank you! Yeah I've tried to create some background music for a bit but I had to make a cut somewhere, sadly.

The concept works pretty well. It creates interesting puzzle situations to be precise with the scythe. Although RNG can play a too big part: on most on my runs I didn’t score much simply because there weren’t enough ripe souls to pass by. I would wait 20 ore seconds before seing one. Didn’t felt fun nor fair. I was able to get 2 upgrades, but wasn’t patient enough to continue. I’m not sure the faster scythe was advantageous, given it makes precise movement more difficult? But again, a lot of the game-design would make more sense with more ripe souls to collect. I still had a pleasant time discovering it though. Good job!

Developer

Thank you for playing and for the helpful review! The soul spawning is definitely high up on my list of things to fix.

I really like the pixel art, design, concept and theme are really good. There is opportunity to make this even better!
Enjoyed my time

A really original idea with original visuals. Weaving the tutorial into the lore is a brilliant touch that keeps you immersed from the very start, and it's easy to get hooked quickly. Nice work!

Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it.

Great game! I really liked the loop and overall vibe of the game.

A short and cute game with an interesting use of the spin theme. Good work!^^

Thanks for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Really cute wee game! Feels like a nice balance of skill and luck, though I did feel like I was waiting a while for marked souls to appear sometimes. The sprites are great and remind me of the critters in Sonic :)

Developer

Thanks so much! I'll definitely have to fix the spawning system.

Very well done! The color choices are great, and the 8 bit sounds very enjoyable.

Thank you!

Fun game! I really liked the character intro and animations, and the gameplay was fun. It was really satisfying to be able to upgrade my speed after starting off so slow. One note, I found the first scythe upgrade (autospin) to actually be a downgrade — it was much harder to control, so I ended up reaping the wrong souls and my scores ended up being much lower. It would be nice if that upgrade allowed you to toggle the spin on & off with the x key, for more control. Great job!

Developer

Thank you for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm a little confused about you getting an autospin. That was definitely a bug I haven't seen except once while developing. It was just supposed to be quicker! D:

I'll have to take another look at that later.

This sounds like the spin of the scythe has to be the deepest drop of all time. Honestly, this game is very cool! Other than the scythe's sound, has to give credit to the game's name, which is straight up called "Sycthe". Like, holy cow. It's so cool.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Interesting concept! I liked your visuals, would have love some background music to chill on while reaping some souls, hehe. And maybe to be able to hold the movement keys down and not have to press them each time to move. But that's not important, good job and keep making games!

Developer

Thanks for playing and for the helpful and encouraging feedback!

I did try to make some music but I wasn't feeling it and decided to focus on the other stuff instead. But I'll see if I add some in the future. I'll also take another look at the movement. Thanks again!

Cool game, the scythe is a glorious weapon to spin.

Developer

Thank you! Glad you had fun spinning.
