Great concept. Time loop stuff is always impressive to me, and adding different characters that can do different things is pretty cool. Managed to beat the game too!
A few points of feedback, though:
- The actual "spinning" part of the game felt really annoying. It was pretty shoehorned in, and, at least for me, the later puzzles I found were very confusing, making me have to spin over and over. I ended up having to go through every room with every character to understand what you're supposed to do. The fact that you can't stop the wheel immediately and the fact that the bird removes a bunch of spikes makes it so that every mistime is amplified and takes what feels like years to go and fit yourself into a little hole and die in the egg room.
- The mole/capybara/big rat thing was really underused and confusing at the start. The symbol on the wheel for it doesn't help either. If the symbol alluded to digging or breaking walls, it would have saved a lot of struggle.
- The switches shouldn't be able to go back. There was never any reason to switch them back off, but the fact that you're able to made it so that I would flip the switch, not know if the input went through, and then spam switch and go see what changed in the world. The fact that half the time, the switches don't affect anything I could see was really annoying.
- The "impossible" jumps aren't impossible enough. Every time there was something that a character barely missed, a jump, a ledge, a rope, it felt like it was really close, so I ended up trying it over and over. The one headhitter near after the first water room felt like it was just really hard, not impossible.
Otherwise, it's a really great game. I enjoyed it tons at the start (though I lost a bit of my wit near the end of the game), and the cozy/horror vibe here is great.
Good work!
Really liked the art, the music and the concept!
Personally not my type of game but seems to be quite unique from the other games submitted
Some feedback:
1- The spin mechanic did not feel fun for me, I did not complete the game since it kept giving me a random creature that I could not advance with and made me need to restart all the time for a spin in hope of getting what I want, also the quote everytime I died made the process slower each time
2- The jump feels a bit off? I don't know if that is the vibe you were going with but seems a bit off, maybe it's too fast? not sure to be honest just based on feels
A very well made, artful, and overall interesting piece - all qualities I like to see in the games I play.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it too far due to a few things - I rolled the mole like 7 times in a row (which is very funny) and simply could not progress out of the opening area after going underground the first time. Then with the others, I could make incremental progress but if I made a mistake and died, I'd have to wait until I rolled that creature again. This is not inherently a flaw, as if I had really spent time with it I'm sure I would have made progress and it's a part of the core idea, but I didn't find the platforming inherently fun to engage with, I would call it underbaked. If I had to offer a recommendation it would be to make each animal able to progress independently of each other, making rolling any of them be about taking you down that animal's path rather than gating progress behind a mix of them. Then, at a later point, they could converge and have more difficult routing.
I only bring up these critiques because there's a lovely tone and atmosphere here, with beautiful pixel art and made with clear intention and mood in mind - the game is good enough to warrant some critique. So I think with a bit of mechanical richness, there's something here. Reminds me a lot of Animal Well, which I'm sure was an inspiration.
Great work! I look forward to what you work on next.
One of the few games I played to completion. Incredibly polished and I can easily see this being successful on steam with a full release. Ironically, the only thing I feel like was holding it back was the spin mechanic. The draw of this game is definitely the mystery of figuring out what each animal does and how to sequence their abilities to progress. The spin for the first few times is okay, but eventually it does get repetitive and becomes more of a chore as you become more comfortable with knowing which animal you need next. Even though you can stop the wheel early, its kinda hard to track the symbol until the last second when it slows and then half the time u miss it. I spent a lot of time just ending myself immediately cause I rolled bad. That being said, that's not nearly enough of a hiccup to make me not want more of this amazing project.
A very fun and immersive game despite the wheel being rigged against the lifeforms I want. Discovered 2 of the sequences, will definitely complete it later when I have time. Unfortunately the theme had to be added to this game in the most annoying way but in all other aspects, you did a fantastic job.
The control choice is a bit weird (X, Z (inverted here in germany to Y) and R? And i think the footstep sound effects for the animals is not the best choice, but other than that, it's well implemented. I miss some ambience music or some tutorial/controls ingame, because i was lost af haha.
Press 'x' for honk!
yea i'm sorry. i totally forgot about keyboards having different layout sometimes ;-;
I think I found my favorite game in this jam. This made me feel so smart when solving the puzzles. (I am not smart)
I suck at puzzle platformers, but not having ANY clue what to do on the first part almost never happens, this game DESPERATELY needed a tutorial in game. I mean the art however was beautiful, but without any understanding of the game I just wasn't able to enjoy it.
very cool game. deltarune keybind = extra point
wow
Very neat puzzle platformer, I loved how you incorporated the theme. I only found out after I was done that you could actually stop the wheel wherever you wanted - I thought I was just skipping the animation when I did it. That would've fixed my main gripe of not getting the only animal I needed a bunch of times in a row, haha. I wish there was a bit more indication what animal works with what, I hit X purely by accident under the circle and similarly with the boxes and the chicken. Other than that though, really neat and you did a great job with it! :D
Metagame cog 65/126
Puzzle design was fantastic and really made me think... I spent far too long of a time without realizing some of hidden tools (not trying to spoil)
The spin to choose your character however was a bit frustrating at times... I really wanted to just play the game! haha
The game started as a 5 in enjoyment, i was having fun doing the puzzles, the mechanics were interesting, and while not too complex, the puzzles required some thought. the problem comes from the platforming, in some places the platforming was extremly tight and unforgiving, there were completly unfair deaths, which i guess adds to the theme, but as a player feels extremly frustrating, for example, the platform on the bottom right path is a pure 50/50 chance of dying or progressing, and unless you fail you'll never die again there, the top right path also had some problems, specifically a jump you had to perform as a human and then as a mole, with platforms above you and water below, i died so many times there that the time you had to wait between deaths was getting really annoying.
Even with all that said, this was a great game, and i still really enjoyed overall, i think the main piece of feedback would be to focus on what makes your game fun, in this case the puzzles which were great. I do have to mention i am really bad at platformers so maybe it was just a skill issue on my part.
On a different topic, the music was clean and nice, really fit the vibe of the game, the duck quacks were 10/10 i loved spamming them. The graphics were good and simple, perfect for this kind of game, even with how simple they were the animated flowers, water, rain and rope did a lot to give the game some more life.
I liked the theme too, it was pretty serious unironically, maybe the spin to win could have been incorporated better as the randomness didn't add much, i tried leaving the spins to fate at first but i towards the end (specially the right path) i needed a specific form after every step, so i started using the stopping of the wheel and the spinning lost a lot of value when it turned into a slightly inconvenient character selection menu.
This is a very good game, interesting aesthetics, fun puzzles and cool mechanics all form a very cohesive game. I like that you added a definitive end, something most jam games don't do. Also I like that you try to provide an experience. It's not pretentious, it's commitment!
I'm giving it a 5 in nearly every category. My only problem was the spinning wheel to select your character. Even after realising you could stop the wheel, over half my runs were suiciding as quickly as possible so I could try with the character I really wanted. Additionally frustrating was missing a jump and then rolling the wrong character. In puzzle terms, the time between realising the solution to a puzzle and executing was way too high.
Overall, very good and I hope you continue working on it after the jam!
absolute fire
My favorite game in the jam
WOW!! A very impressive entry!!
Enjoyment: 5/5
A very very interesting and fun puzzle game!! I have to admit i had a bit of trouble understanding all the mechanics at first, but the mystery and satisfaction in understanding how the environment works is very rewarding!!
Creativity and Theme: 4/5
Very creative take on the theme! I have to admit that maaybe you could've gravitated more on the spinning factor, as it's not quite the main focus of the game, but you still implemented spinning pretty well!
Visuals: 4/5
Very clean and simple visuals! My only complaint is the various forms having no animations when moving/using actions, which feels a little awkward, but other than that i really loved the simple yet very atmospheric style!
Audio: 5/5
Very good usage of the audio! The music and sound effects used fit the vibe very well! (+ bonus points for having the music be original compositions!)
Seriousness: 5/5
The game does, indeed, feel pretty serious.
FINAL RATING: 4.5/5
Very very solid game!! I loved playing through it and I definetly reccomend giving it a try!
I spent like 20 mins trying to get a bird so I got frustrated after already getting like three of the four lit up and just now realized I could stop the wheel wherever I want. I like the art style some of the collisions and character controllers could be polished tho. good art nice job :D
Spooky and puzzly. Reminds me of Animal Well in all the best ways.
Really impressive stuff! I love the simplicity of the art style.
