This was a fun little game.  I'm not sure I understand how the bazooka works since I don't think I've successfully destroyed anything with it, but I still liked dodging everything.  It really ramps up as more things spawn in, but I appreciate that you give a good amount of warning when something dangerous is about to spawn in.

On one of my runs I got really lucky for a while and could just stand in place and jump every so often, so it might be worth considering whether you should spawn something intentionally near/on the player (not every spawn, but occasionally) to force some movement, just so that the optimal strategy doesn't become "find a safe spot and stay there."

The core loop here is fun, and it's somewhat addicting going back and trying to beat your score.  I like that things ramp up so quickly; being a small time commitment makes it really easy to say "just one more run."

I also feel like some more-detailed background art and some sound effects could really help establish the atmosphere.

All-in-all, a really solid jam entry.  I had fun with my time with it.  Great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing!!! I appreciate your comment here. It is really detail and have so much good advices that I could follow. I'm really glad that I could create a game that feel addictive, fun and challenging. I did my best to implement everything into the game. Right now, it's not everything, but I'm happy with this current result. As you can see now,  this game isn't finish yet, so, I planned to update it. A lot of things could make a lot more sense after the update. It will include the background, improved environments, and things to fix the feeling of "finding the safe spot". But until then. Wish you the best on the jam voting, and thank you again for playing!

...i didn't even last a minute :D i really liked this, super addicting and i want to keep trying for a better time. this made me realize that i really like dodging stuff. nice character model & animations!!

Developer

That's the spirit! :D I poured so much effort into the character's model and animation and all. Glad you like it! And thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Not bad not bad. The arcade style gameplay is pretty good. The connection to the theme is a little lost on me, but there are quite a few interesting spinning elements. Visuals are nice although I’m not the biggest fan of the game environment’s styling. Audio is nice, nothing jarring. Bazooka Boy seems pretty serious to me. Good Job!

Developer(+1)

Glad you like most of the elements I put in here. The background and most of the environment right now seem kind of boring. I'll try to fix that in the next update. Anyway, thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! I love these types of dodging games, especially since they are not often done! the character design is amazing, and I wish there was more sounds than just music. I also haven't figured out if I can destroy anything with the bazooka or if its for movement only. I'd like to see this taken further, have a larger arena, have some collectibles to go for, an in game timer and leaderboard! You could also check "disc room" on steam for inspiration (not the same gameplay but similar in concept). I enjoyed my time and the furthest I got was 40 seconds, but those turrets are insane!

Developer

Thank you for playing! And honestly, these additions are making my head spin (to win), but they are also on my have-to-add list too. Right now, the game doesn't have anything much, so that's why I plan to update it! The update announcement will be made as soon as the jam voting ends. It will include the content I want to add and fix. SO, if you don't wanna miss it, you can follow me on itch. And I'll be sure to check out Disc Room and learn about it. This comment is really helping me out. Thanks, really, and I wish you luck on the jam's voting. I'll see you later!

I like the design of the character a lot and the animations are fun and stylized. Wish the bazooka some explosions. But the concept is really cool, and it gets really hard trying to stay alive. I like how you have some warning when a new obstacle is spawning.

Developer

Thanks! I really pour so much effort into code and animations, and all. Glad you like it, and thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Fun and challenging!

Developer

Happy you like it. Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Very addictive and hard! I liked the animations and gameplay concept, only wished there were more SFX. Overall great game!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you're in the flow! More sound effects will be included in the next update, and thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

who doesn't like a good bazooka :D this was pretty fun, but holy hell is it hard lol
it felt pretty good to control, and it's challenging but fair, though there was one tiny thing with the spikes where they can hit you while you're in the air

Developer(+1)

Yeah, that's one tiny spot I've missed. It probably happened because I forgot to code the spike to damage the player when they're on floor or when they're falling not when they're jumping. It's impressive how you noticed, tho. Nobody has mentioned it before. I must say you did a good job finding the bug! Don't worry, I'll fix it on the next update. I'll also release the devlog about the update too! If you don't want to miss it, you can follow me. Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Moved around and died a lot. At least I can shoot stuff.

Developer(+1)

That's the way to be, man. Thank you for trying it, tho!

Submitted(+1)

I like the combination of 3D and 2D! It’s fun with plenty of obstacle-based gimmicks. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you had fun! I planned to make this game in complete 2d but I'm just to lazy to do some of the sprite, so I'm just straight up mixing them together. I'm really happy you like it! And thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Game controls well and all the deaths feel fair. Pity no fighting back for our cool little guy

Developer

Glad to hear that! And yeah. My boy here right now didn't have an ability to fight back is not justified. So the next update I'll change that! Just you wait. Thank you for playing!

this is insanely addicting! i love the simplicity in its design and how quickly things ramp up. the longer i played, the more i appreciated how the obstacles interact with the player in terms of forcing the player in doing certain decisions. at first i didn't really feel the need to use the bazooka, but as i kept playing it became a pretty nice lifeline to have if i was in a tight spot! i also love the art of the game a lot, though one point feedback is that i think the a lot of the obstacles share similar colors thus blending both into itself and the background (especially the sawblades and cannon balls from the wall guns). maybe having them be more differentiating might help with readability, though i do like the color palette you're going for with the aesthetic so maybe a simple red color outline might also work?

got pretty into playing the game, wanted to avenge my partner phyrion but kinda inadverdantly found a meta strat xd. ggs and congrats on the submission!

Developer

It's a great honor that you've tried my game! I honestly don't know how your feedback could be any better. Many of the things you said make perfect sense. I'll take that into consideration and make improvements! And thank you so much for getting so engrossed in the game and surviving for 3 minutes! I couldn't even do that, thank you so much!

Submitted(+1)

np np, i see a fun a game, i play it xd. if you're planning to make improvements on the game, then i should mention the method i got a highscore in since its a bit exploitable.

i think you did a really good job on having a lot of danger areas which require you to constantly keep moving and not stay in one place, though there is a relatively safe-ish spot if the player is comfortable with dodging within smaller spaces and that is the bottom left and right corners. mostly during the 40-50 second mark, when the level becomes a bit too hectic i usually default to going over there and just short hopping the cannon balls that come my way. my player is immediately next to one of the cannons so i can easily see when they're about to shoot, so all i'd need to do is watch out for the other cannon ball coming from the other side of the level. the saws going vertically up and down the walls are small enough to allow the player to not have to move out of the corners when they come near, so i mostly just need to be careful about the positioning of everything. i wouldn't say this is necessarily an exploit or a bad thing to have, it still is difficult to consistently survive and spikes do spawn at the corners eventually, but it is a safer spot to be in compared to other places in the map, with most of the game taking place there like 70% of the run. though yeah this is just an opinion of someone that got a little to into the game xd. this might not even matter depending on if you add some mechanics that change how the player engages with the game (i saw some comments about using the bazooka to attack things), but thought i'd point out just in case!

but yeah, now im bracing for my highscore to get beaten any day now lol.

Developer(+1)

Understood! It's quite amazing that you can find safe zones in my game. To be honest, I know there are safe areas there, but almost every time I test the game, there are always spikes spawning there. So I thought it would be balanced with the other areas of the level, but it seems you're lucky enough that they never spawn there. Therefore, I will definitely try to fix it! Let's see how I do that, and thank you very much for telling me this!

Submitted(+1)

Nice little game about survining in a room against traps. I wish to use my bazooka to kill stuffs instead of dodging. I manage to survive about 48 seconds. Maybe  in futurue you can add  more objectives.

Developer

Thank you for playing! I was planning to update the game eventually, but adding attack mechanics is gonna be a tricky one because I have to rebalance the game a lot. I'll give it a try! Adding more stuff could be something that could improve the game's balance, actually. Thanks for the idea!

Haha. Now, now, let's not brag ourselves too much. What if someone suddenly gets a record of an hour or more? We can't waste that much time. There's still a lot of submission for us to vote, fellas!

Submitted(+1)

Managed to sneak in a 68 second run!

Am curious how the cannons are animated, is it rigged with a series of bones or maybe shape keys of some kind ? Found it quite amusing how the moved hahahaha

Developer(+1)

Congrats on surviving longer than a minute! That's huge!
Behind the cannon's animation is just a simple 3-bone setup with no rig. These bones aren't actually connected to each other, but are parented. I'm doing this just so the cannon can stretch freely when I'm animating. You're really welcome, and thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

the fact that you can avoid the minecart even if you are in the upper part of the arena with the bazooka is just worderful. great game! also my record is 67 seconds

Developer

Right?! Avoiding the minecart even on the upper part is totally sick! And congrats on surviving for... Alright, dude. Thank you for playing, tho!

Submitted(+1)

Really cool bite sized game! The game's premise is simple but it gets chaotic very fast! Though I do find the minecart very unforgiving (but it could just be a skill issue on my part xD). The visuals are quite good and I love the 3D character in a 2D environment which made it look more stylized! I do wish there were more audio feedback on the game but completely understand of the time constraint! I would say its kinda serious as well. Great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! The minecarts were added because I think the upper half of the level is just easier than the lower half, so I included the minecart there so the player won't stay up at the top for too long and losing sight of the fun they could have in the bottom half. It's unforgiving? yes! But also really entertaining? Absolutely!

Submitted(+1)

The character looked 2D but was actually 3D, i love how it blended with the environment, it just flowed.

I lasted for about 21 seconds as i was trying to figure out what i was supposed to do, looking back at the games title before realizing i'm probably only supposed to "evade"

I'm curious though, does the bazooka have a use? cause i  noticed the little animation that spins the weapon and got me thinking i could probably deflect some of those incoming projectiles.

Developer

You can only use the bazooka to help you break away from an area filled with obstacles. Using the bazooka to deflecting the projectile is like a thing to do, but unfortunately you cannot do such thing, yet, You can aim the bazooka by holding right click and shoot it by pressing left click, and left click again when not aiming to spin the bazooka and reload it. Hope that helps!

Submitted(+1)

yeah it does, i'll make sure to try it out again.

Submitted(+1)

That was a chaotic experience! I love the design of the character and the movement of the cannons.  Didn't survive for very long but it's addicting to try again. I wasn't entirely sure what the bazooka's advantage over just jumping was, except maybe a little bit more height. Maybe if you could only reach the shorter platforms by jumping and had to use the bazooka to get to the higher ones there would be more incentive to use it.

Cool game!

Developer(+1)

Glad you like the character's design and the silliness I've add to the cannon! Now about the bazooka, surely there's a different between just jumping and using a bazooka's knockback. For example, you can use it to reach the upper platform without jump onto the small platform, or if the mine cart are running and you don't want to get down the upper platform, you can use the bazooka to avoid those things. Hope this helps! And thank again for playing!

Submitted(+1)

this is so cool! i love how chaotic and hard the game instantly gets!

cool hypothetical basooka mechanic idea: when you successfully hit something with ur basooka, its destroyed. you could play around with this a bit and color code things as destructible and not destructible, so its still chaotic, but controllable.

also, i feel like screen shakes and audio cues when the basooka is released and/or hits a wall would make the game feel more complete!

overall, this is really fun to play!

Developer

Thank you for your comment! And you know what? 90% of your idea also are mine too. I planned to implement those into my game, but due to the time limit, I have to create what I am capable of at that moment. BUT don't worry! I have a plan to upgrade the game to be more complete and release it on Newgrounds as soon as the jam's voting ends! Just you wait.
And of course. Thank you for playing!
