I don't read VNs a lot and was a bit reluctant at first before trying it. Turns out it was actually fun, and you incorporated the theme in a simple and natural way: usually VNs' outcomes depend more on the player's choices so they're just a "click the option you never clicked before" simulator. Here the wheel and the mini games kinda stop that (though some of those really have no cue at all which is fine).
Never realised that I do like my stories with a bit of RNG, great job on this.

Developer

thank you for giving it a try! I'm really glad you enjoyed it anyway. I also agree that we should add some sort of cue for the minigames, especially the typing games. We definitely plan to polish the game up after the jam ends. Thank you for your feedback!

What a charming little game!  Great fun all around.  Cute little story.  The art for Stella was impressive, and I got a real kick out of the art style being so different for the other characters.

I also think you did a good job balancing reading versus interaction.  The little mini-games were nice; not too difficult, and great to break up sections of reading.  Also interesting to have a little bit of RNG in the game with the spinners you just flip, instead of just presenting a choice like most VNs would; little differences like that made this stand out.

I wasn't expecting a VN for this jam, but I'm glad you went in that direction.  I really enjoyed this one.  Great work!

Developer

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. We definitely figured there weren't going to be many VNs in this jam but we were really excited to make one for our first game. Thank you for playing!

Loved it. After struggling in other jam games, this was a chill break xo

Gotta say, really hard to say who are the main characters, since EVERYONE is so detailed <.<

Did enjoy it tho. Felt like a very tiny version of bulders gate, with how the wheel works. I like the idea. And I got a date :)

Developer(+1)

Hey, it is hard to tell! I wrote the dang game and I thought Stella was the main character . . . all of my friends played and turns out Ryder & Ford are the true main characters LOL. Thanks for playing, I'm right there with you about struggling in some of these other games. Tons of great submissions in this jam, but some really highlight how bad I am at games!

Submitted(+1)

Really wholesome game! I love the aesthetic and the vibes overal. I love how only Stells is fully detailed and the rest of the characters are all just uncolored lol. I'm not usually a visual novel gamer but this was really fun! The writing was really good and I love how there's multiple endings as well! The skill check on the spins is very fair but losing 1 skill check in a whole game and having to restart to get the best ending can be a bit frustrating sometimes (but its completely understandable). Overall, fun and wholesome game! Great work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Unfortunately we had plans on the Saturday reserved for bug fixing, so there was no additional time for us to fix up our options menu. Most Visual Novels have a save/load feature or a rollback feature, something to let you cheat your path. For our game, the initial idea was that after beating it once you would be able to turn on "cheats" and instead of having to play the mini-games, you could just choose X route. This would let you quickly explore all the different story paths + endings. Unfortunately, time wasn't in our favor and we had to submit as is. Also yes, the uncolored characters vs. Stella, a not-so-subtle clue about how our protagonist has his eyes on.

Submitted(+1)

I'm glad that you already thought of it which is great! Comepletely understandable for not being able to implement it on time during a game jam! Its highly common and thats okay, your game was great anyway and you guys should be proud!

Submitted(+1)

This game was so cute! The writing was great and very interesting, and I had a lot of fun reading it! It's really a cute and very serious visual novel, and I will probably keep playing it later to try and get to the other endings!

Developer

thank you so much! I'm glad you like it and I do hope you try to get the other two endings if you have the time. The bad ending really makes me laugh and the perfect ending is worth it. Though once the jam is over I plan to change the perfect ending to actually have a kiss. It's a little difficult since you have to get perfect emails. Unfortunately we didn't get our cheat system working before submission 😭.

Very cute, loved the art!

Can't say I have played this sort of game before, but I'm sure it is a prime example of the genre. Only slight issue I had was I failed the first "type" of minigame each time due to not knowing what it was expecting me to do. Which I suppose taught me how to do it for the next times it came up, but locks you out of the perfect ending on your first run. Maybe that is intended and normal for this type of game? I have no idea, but apart from the areas that I assume you just ran out of time for (the poor uncoloured souls) it's really the only thing I picked up on as being off.

Wheel done! All ROUND great effort.

Developer

thankfully the only thing that determines the endings are the email games. You get the regular/true ending as long as you get at least one of the options right on either email minigame. The other minigames only really determine the dialogue that follows. We really wanted to get a cheat system and save system working but it all broke before we submitted :/. As for the side characters, it was definitely a risky maneuver but we felt it'd be really silly to keep them funny looking. Especially to emphasize Stella as the MC's main focus. I do agree that if we fully flesh this out after the jam that it'd be nice to clean them up. Maybe have a toggle for silly and serious mode. I'd also like to implement an in game tutorial. Thank you for trying our game! We appreciate the feedback and glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

A lot of lovely stuff going here! I really enjoyed the minigames they were great! I'd love to see more of the typing game if ever possible. Stella is very sweet and I love how the title comes to play in the perfect ending! I like to think that the reason why everyone is not as polished as Stella is because the protagonist is so solely focused on her that he renders everyone else less.

Developer(+1)

thank you! I'm so glad you liked it. You're also spot on about the side characters. I purposefully kept them silly since the MC only really cares for Stella.

HR will be hearing about this…

Developer

Nooo!!! They're so in love! We can't let HR ruin it!

Very Serious dating story.. But i'm not sure if she's into me or not.... Maybe i need to replay to be sure.

Developer(+1)

hmmmmm good point, it's always best to take a double look and make sure you like it... lol I hope you enjoyed!!!

Submitted(+1)

This game is so impossibly cute, the art and dialogue are so on point. I can tell the devs had fun with it (also Ford is my fav). I got the ‘perfect’ ending on the second try, and this line hit like a truck in the context of the jam, amazing job.

Developer(+1)

Yayyy! Thank you for going for the perfect ending too. I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's really funny though because when I drew Ford I couldn't look at him, ever. I didn't like the way he looked at me and I couldn't take him seriously. He's so funny. We absolutely had fun with it lol

Developer(+1)

double reply since this account is shared between the two of us . . . hi, blake, I did the writing. THANK YOUU! I KNEW that line was a BANGER so im happy someone else spotted it. :3

So first try I tried playing on mobile because it didn't say it wasn't compatible, and the wheel worked by typing (for obvious reasons) didn't. (The spinner effect was very fun on mobile, so maybe that would be a fun platform to add?)

First the small concerns: the is the text is really small and the sprites are too, it's a little hard to read (my eyes are bad lol) and I'd love to get a better look at the art because it's so cute! It was also difficult to read some of the wheels for the same reason.

It's a nice touch the truly random wheels don't seem to effect the ending, maybe that could be explained at the start? I would've loved to see my rival because that sounds fun, but I was worried it would ruin the confession at the end haha! Some harmless randomness can add a lot of personality to each run, so I like those choices being there

Overall very cute! I liked it a lot!! The main menu looks amazing too, I love the design of it.

Developer

thank you for trying it! Yeah, unfortunately when we made it, we did not take mobile in mind so everything is sized to a 1920x1080 monitor. When we come back to it I'd like to explain how to play within the game as well.

Submitted(+1)

A few in-game prompts/instructions would be nice. :) I eventually stumbled into how to play the games, but not knowing how to play them definitely took me a second to adjust! I realized after the fact that the page gives instructions on the mini-games, so maybe that was on me. I have a habit of just diving straight into games.

Really cute story. Visual novels aren't really my thing, but this was cozy and nice, and I was glad to have experienced it.

Developer

thank you for trying our game! I do agree it would've been nice to have something showing how to play in the actual game. When we come back to it I would like to try and implement it!

Submitted(+1)

This game was amazing! I have played a few vn's but so far this was the most fun of them all, especially due to all these interactive choices and minigames, which kept me engaged! the characters were very silly, and stella definitely made me want to get that perfect ending :). All in all, one of my favourite entries, and definitely the best VN of this jam! I'd have liked if there were a few more choice which would affect the ending besides your performance on the emails though.

Developer(+1)

thank you do much!!! I'm so happy you liked it. I completely agree with the more choices interacting with the ending. It would've been really nice to not only implement some more interactions but also some more dialogue. Especially ones that would affect the ending.

I landed a date with Stella! Great story. I really enjoyed the humor in the mad libs style emails. Great submission!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad you mentioned the mad lib style because that's exactly what we were going for. Glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

This is great! I had a lot of fun, and enjoyed the story, too. Good visuals. I love that Ryder, Ford, and Celica are... the way they are. It's like I work at Wheel Co.

So glad I got the "good" ending. We actually had some similarity between our games! Mine is also a visual novel, except the "wheel" in your game is like the entire dialog brancher in mine.

If I had to criticize, I'd add more SFX (music was quiet, add sounds in response to dialog).

Developer

thank you!!! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I totally agree with the music and sound effects. We definitely made it a little too quiet. Appreciate the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Loved the twist of using minigames with spinning for the choices in this visual novel. The art was cute too, definitely fitting with the story and music. You had me worried that I'd have to play beyblades once or spin for the result at the end, lol.  Overall, nicely done. Hadn't seen a visual novel in the game jam yet!

Developer(+1)

thank you! We did kindaaa want to make a little interaction with the beyblades but we figured it was a silly little bit and kept it simple. Glad we did 😂

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

That was lovely!! I have never actually played a visual novel before so I got nothing to compare it to and also I don't read very fast so I figured it would be too big of a timesink for me cuz I want to play other games but I decided to give this a go while I was eating and after I finished eating I still kept going because I wanted to see the end! I'm guessing for a visual novel that's a pretty good sign!

Art and story were cute, there was juuust enough interactions to keep me engaged but none of it was super hard of course. I really wanted to see if Stella would say yes!

But I'm gonna deduct points because there was no smooch >:c (jk, I'm not gonna deduct points. BUT WE STILL DESERVE A SMOOCH!!!)

That was a great experience, I am very happy that this was my introduction to visual novels! I might give a few others a try someday too!

Developer

thank you!!! I'm glad it was your intro to VNs and I really hope you try some other ones. If you get a chance, I'd recommend failing all the emails and getting the bad ending. It's quicker than the other ends and I love the rejection face I drew for her. I know there's one I've also been wanting to try called Suds and Buds. I definitely want to try and get the kiss scene back in the game 😭. It would've been perfect.

Pretty neat visual novel! I liked the mini-game events, like the QTEs and spinning the wheel to make choices. That feels like a pretty fresh mechanic for the genre. Nice art too! I guess for the theme, you spin (the wheel of fate) to win (the relationship). Nice work!

Developer

Well I'll be honest~, your fate isn't too dependent on the wheel! That was one of the initial discussion points for us was if we wanted the mechanic to really drive the ending or not, and unfortunately I'm a sucker for a happy ending so we decided to ensure the ending was something the end user could still control / manipulate, so getting a bad ending is really a purposeful choice. That said, I really like that as a tag line.

"Spin the wheel of fate! Wheel you win her over?" or something cheesy like that, LOL.

Submitted(+1)

This game is so good!! I have zero criticisms

I saw in the comment below you said you might redo the portraits of the side characters but Ryder's portrait is too funny so I think think if you do, you should just leave his portrait as is. It would add to the seriousness.

Developer(+1)

Bahahaha, you're right. I think if any character is perfect as is, it's Ryder. Arguably the one with the least amount of detail / attention when MsNiimo drew him, and it fits his personality so well. He's just there!

Submitted(+1)

Whoaaaaa, so cute! I love everything about this! The mini games are a great way to break up the visual novel structure! Although unfinished? the Ryder and Ford illustrations made me giggle. Especially when it turned out Ford was going to be my best friend haha. Excellent Work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!!! There is definitely room to clean up a few things, primarily the broken play button after beating the game or getting our options menu working. We've also received a few comments about the other characters being "unfinished" illustrations. It was actually the intent, we felt by drawing them like that it would help characterize Stella as the main focus of the game, and well . . . the characters look so silly!

That said, I think if we circle back to this project and want to improve it, we'll draw proper portraits of the side characters and put them in full color, so people can appreciate Ryder & Ford in their full glory.
