We liked the randomised position of the portal thingy. It would definfinetly be way easier if it was in an pattern, good job with that. it definetly gets hard as you go though, but it's still really fun. :)
Thanks a ton for playing my game!!! It's such an honor to have you play, and yes I would like to make the portals more pattern based with a little randomization just to make it predictable :)
This is a lot of fun! My best was 314, though I’ve only given it a few attempts. Generally it wasn’t too difficult to stay alive, but if I got caught on some moss or something and got hit, I found it could be hard to recover. I never really used the dash - the double-space binding for it felt uncomfortable to me, and it didn’t seem to be all too necessary for the most part anyway. Perhaps the game used arrow keys / Z / X or similar as bindings I’d find it easier, since I generally dislike playing platformers with WASD (that’s up to preference, though, so I don’t fault the game for it). My only other piece of feedback is that the game feel could probably stand to be improved somewhat; adding more sound effects, and maybe some screenshake when getting hit, could help add feedback to the player’s actions. Nice work on this!
Hey thanks for playing! I do wish I had some more variety on control schemes, I kinda just went with what i liked haha.. (whoops). I am curious though, I do have a screenshake in place, so if its not working for some reason thats something I'll need to look into.
Thanks again! <3
Oh wait, you’re right, there is a screenshake! Not sure how I forgot about that when commenting. Disregard what I said about that, then :)
A simple but fun game. There are a few details that I really appreciates, like how a machete is only consumed when you cut into a piece of moss but not if you just swing it through the air. Well made and well polished game!
Thanks! I tried to ensure there weren't any mechanics that felt unfair to the player <3
Very interesting little game. I like how the slowly growing plants adds a difficulty curve to each run, while you still can cut some of them occasionally. I'm not sure if the web version was bugged, but the jump is a little weird. It seems to always jump if I'm holding it, not just if I pressed it, which led to some unintentional jumps, and I didn't really like having to hold the sprint button the whole time. I didn't see a reason to not hold it. I think I would've preferred if sprinting was on by default and shift was the dash. Overall very well made though!
Hey, thanks a ton for the feedback! In development, I was considering adding input buffering to the jumps, as initially pressing the jump would sometimes lead to it not registering, and that felt worse than simply jumping if you hold the button. I didn't have time to implement the buffering, but I definitly will keep this in mind! <3
It took me like three tries until I remembered the J for slashing! I think that is part my fault :) but also that it’s not needed until quite a bit into the game and thus easy to forget and the UI isn’t super clear what it is. I felt like I was doing a decent job getting the score I got but I see I’m nowhere near the level of other players. Still even with my limited skills, it was quite enjoyable jumping around and collecting swirly things.
Play-through:
Thanks for playing, and I'm sorry about that! I wish I had incorporated a tutorialk, but unfortunately ran out of time </3. Thanks for recording your gameplay, I'll definitely take a look!
The mechanics are really good. I especially like the emphasis on using two hands on the keyboard. It felt quite comfortable and I got a handle on the controls really quickly! I wish there was a bit more of a progression system as I got to about 650 before I decided to move on (trying to smash out game ratings before voting ends hahaha). Great job though! Oh also, I really love your thumbnail - it drew me in!!
Oh damn that is a HIGH score! I'm super glad someone shares my sentiment in controls, I love using they keyboard like a big controller! I was planning a LOT of progression in this game (shop, boss, tutorial), but unfortunately this was all I could manage </3. Thanks for playing!
Completely understandable!! 4 days is not a lot of time omg
Ooh this is one of my favorite ones this year. The character feels really good to control (and I like their design) and zipping around from point to point is super fun. Having the attacks be a limited resource you need to choose to divide between enemies and the algae is really smart and means you have to think carefully about what you’re doing all the time.
I keep getting about 500 points, though in my later runs I’m getting it faster, which must count for something! I think in my last run the dash broke—I’m not totally sure what happened, but I couldn’t do it anymore.
Anyway! Great job, and thanks for sharing it with us. :)
Wow, thanks a ton for playing my game! I'm so happy the mechanics reached you in such a deep and dynamic way, that was my intention and it kinda just came together at the end!
Those are some high scores too, I don't think I've gotten that far lol. And thanks for letting me know about the dash, I'll have to look into that <3
Overall a pretty fun game. The basic move and jump controls felt good and the image to demonstrate the controls makes understanding the controls nice easy.
I found that trying to use the dash with a double space was rather awkward and I didn't really end up using it because I was expecting to jump higher instead of dashing left/right. This also seemed to apply a little inconsistently - was there a cooldown for this I wasn't aware of?
I also felt like running out of time took me by surprise, since I was concentrating so much on moving around, I didn't notice the timer changing. Some extra player feedback, whether that's audio, or changing the border colour might be a good way to help with this.
The short increment the blue bobles give makes for a brutal, but entertaining challenge. Great job!
Thanks a ton for the feedback! The dash itself needs some explaining (I didn't have time to give a tutorial), but it relies on the direction you are aiming. I put it in the description, but essentially if you hold W while doing the dash, you do indeed go pretty high up! As for a cooldown, it falls under the same umbrella (I reaaaallyy wish I had a tutorial), but once your timer falls bellow 15 seconds, you can no longer dash.
Thanks a ton for the genuine feedback! I'll be sure to write all of this down and learn from them <3
Great presentation and maybe the best thumbnail I have seen. Fantastic controls too, I like the warping on the sides.
I think it can be improved if the blue orbs were mathematically guaranteed to be reachable, at least with some leeway. Also I was going to praise the "mold" as a cool enemy only to notice later they were platforms lol.
Oh interesting, thank you for the feedback. I didn't consider making the blue orbs mathematically reachable, but that is definitely something I'll be looking into. As for the mold, it is kiiinda like an enemy! If you get caught inside of it as it grows, it'll wring the poor little slug guy out, and you'll be taking damage as it does. You can also slice through it with your sword!
Once again, I really appreciate the feedback!
art and animations are really fluid! i enjoyed dashing around
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the dash mechanic!
Overall I love the idea and think it is a really solid entry. The art is nice and the sound design is fine too.
The controls themselves could be improved, Having to double jump to dash is a bit weird and even then it doesnt trigger, I think having either sprint or dash would be much better. I would also prefer a different button for sword, J I thought was maybe a bit weird.
But even still the controls were smooth enough to enjoy the game. So the game is really nicely done.
The movement definitely needs improvement, and the controls were a giaant oversight lol, I like using my keyboard like a big controller but I have learned that's not a shared sentiment.
I'm a bit curious to know when the dash doesn't trigger. Few key things I wasn't able to teach was that below 15 seconds you can no longer dash, and the dash depends on the direction you are moving (hold W to dash upwards). If it isn't working outside of these conditions, that's something I would definitely like to look into
Okay I was under the impression that it doesnt work below 10s. Did not know it was 15s. So yeah that is not a bug.
The cover art is SOOOO GOOD
Thank youuu! I took a lot of inspiration from spelunky artworks! <3
Really well polished platformer with solid game mechanics :D
Nice jam entry!
Thanks! The mechanics are preeetty basic so I'd like to improve on them a bit more!
Simple, but engaging gameplay, the movement felt smooth and I liked the sprite work and nice contrast between background and foreground - very readable. Also having controls displayed at all times really helps.
Now for the more critical part :D I don't see the purpose of sprint button. It makes character move faster, which I want at all times, since the game is timed, so it would seem that I want it pressed constantly. So it's rather pointless, the character could just move at increased speed and nothing would change. The music was nice and atmospheric, but when time was running out, the switch felt a little jarring (though I know it's hard to make a smooth transition, especially in such short amount of time).
Overall, great job, this isn't anything major :)
Hey thanks for the feedback! I do recall trying to implement a transition but in the end ran out of time, and I 1000% agree, my pinky just ends up cramping quite a bit
Clever idea of bushes growing and serving as platforms. I couldn't not to think of Terraria boss fights if this had horizontal scrolling as well!
I couldn't imagine an empress of light in this game. Thanks for playing <3
Gosh this game is really well polished. I really like the player character, very cute and silly :3
I honestly dont think i have any feedback or critique about anything here, it was just really well made and everything fits together nicely :3
Aww thank you so much that is very sweet <3
lol really fun..quite addicting.. max score i could get was around 700..had lot of fun..little guy's movements are really smooth..everything makes sense..Kind of perfectly balanced game..really nice green buildup mechanic..it add more tension to the scene..Bro i think you didnt mean it intentionally..but when little guy swings the blade it looks a little idk check it and you will know what i mean..lol ..Great work i loved the game!!
sorry about the joke but i couldnt help it 😭😭
LOL NOOO!! During development it looked a lot worst trust me! Thanks for playing, thats a stupid high score
REALLY solid movement, I think this is some of the best feeling platformer controls I've played in jams. The game is kept quite simple and the movement carries it so much. I also love the pixel art, it's very simple and charming and does its job well. Although it was easy to get into, I do think the game would benefit from a bit of a smoother onboarding process or tutorial since I had a bit of confusion but it cleared up pretty quickly (I'm also aware it's quite tight to add that to a jam game lol)
Great work!!
Hey, thanks for checking my game out!! The platforming was the one thing I took a lot of time to get as right as I possibly could, it's not perfect but it is what it is!
And thanks a ton for the feedback! I truly wish I could've built a tutorial, but I'm glad you were able to pick it up quick!
The alge mechanic is very creative and I like how you have to choose what to use your sword on. good job🫡
Thank you! I'm glad you found the mechanics to be dynamic, that was a big challenge for me.
Really cool and fun game! I loved the movement and natural difficulty increase where if the moss gets bigger and bigger, you’d have to find your way around it and if you don’t deal with them early on, you’d have trouble getting them blu bobles (idk if it’s bubbles), but while playing it i realized the most efficient strategy was to hoard bats to jus dig in the moss whenever one pops in there (i dunno if that’s intentional or not). Also a dash disappearing at the 15 second mark was something i had to play around (which was also fun), Overall a solid and really fun play ^v^
Thanks for playing, I'm glad you liked it!!!! That strategy is one among many, I've seen some people try to get rid of it before it grows, some hoard them to kill the birds, and some are strategic and hoard them until the time is right! Also nice score!
