Really cool vintage theater art style! The idea of showing HP through a sword hanging from above is super interesting! Brilliant job!

But I really miss seeing the enemies' HP! Or is that intentional?

Developer

Thanks for playing, Im glad you enjoyed. The lack of enemy HP is on purpose. We tried to go for a more vague health/damage values and directions like the original Binding of Isaac.

Nice antique setting. Really good art. Overall great game!

I really enjoyed the deck building aspect and theme. I really felt the weight of the sword coming down on me. :D

Would have loved to see more story elements of the hero's journey!

Developer

Thanks for playing, I am glad you enjoyed. Yeah initially we did have more of a narrative arc/progression in mind, but a lot of it got cut out due to time constraints

Ahh yeah, same for Jeevis. I did opening and closing cinematics with voice over but they didn't get implemented. :(

Nice work. Loved the art style.

yoo that's so cool! That's really interesting to see different games made by differnt teams but with the same inspiration.. I really love the art style and the calmer pace, it's pretty clean for a jam game, well polished. Good job!

Submitted(+1)

WOW! this was so good! also that's a " POT OF GREED " 😂

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, I am glad you enjoyed :)
Also, for legal reasons, it's actually the "Vase of Greed" haha

This is unbelievably good, and would be an impressive full release let alone a jam project, you should be really proud! Such brilliant theming and satisfying game loop that leaves you wanting more, I hope you develop this further because with an extension to the overall objective/progression, you could have something very successful here.

Developer

Omg thank you so much :)) Our team worked super hard on it, so it feels amazing to see people enjoying the game! We are thinking of developing further, not sure if we will reach a full release or anything (I am incredibly bad at working on games past the jam haha), but definitely want to add more cards, enemies, and just generally create a stronger sense of progression

So well made, so beautiful and so addictive! The sound design is absolutely peak and the art too! I love the choice of the theater inspired artistic direction and it recalls exactly how you cannot change the outcome of the story in the end.

Developer

Thanks for playing and giving such a thoughtful response. I am glad you liked how our art style fit the gameplay/narrative. You might have been the first to notice that motif, or at least the first one to point it out xd

Submitted(+1)

Polished and create game. The concept was well executed. Great work!

Submitted(+2)

Wow the theming is amazing. Really polished entry overall

Submitted(+2)

such a creative concept and theming, i especially love how your health bar is represented. the entire game has such a cool aesthetic and i absolutely adore it!

i wouldve liked to have seen a little more strategy in the combat since you can just play all of your cards at once, maybe a mechanic where you can store a card from your hand for the next turn?

overall an incredibly pleasant experience, would love a post-jam version :)

Developer

Thanks for playing and I am glad you enjoyed our take on the theme :)

There is actually a way to save cards for the next turn. There is a card called "Avarice" that makes it so that you don't discard cards at the end of turns. But we noticed that it is pretty inconsistent on what cards people get offered in their playthroughs, so a lot of players unfortunately end runs without seeing 3-4 cards even once sadly. Looking forward, we are thinking of a more "controlled randomness" type solution to make sure people get to see and play every card in their run

the papercraft coliseum concept is such a cool idea! the visuals git the game well and the animations are satisfying. i especially liked the sword of damocles falling slowly as a visual indicator for a health bar, + the audio chosen for it whenever it would fall lower was perfect! i did run into a bug (?) on round 2 (after getting the first new card) where i couldn't use any shield cards no matter how much i dragged, even though I didn't have any active. not sure if i just missed some explanation there on my part though!! nice work!

Developer

Thanks for playing the game and for the thoughtful comment. It sounds like you have run into and used the "Hubris" card. The description says something like "Break all defenses," which includes your own! At the cost of not being able to cast any more defensive cards for the encounter, all your enemies take double damage basically. I am sorry this wasn't communicated clearly haha

Submitted(+1)

oh my!!! Thank you for the explanation, that makes so much sense haha

Submitted(+2)

Really loved the artwork and the sword slowly moving down when you take damage was a really good touch!

Submitted(+2)

peak game, would love to see you develop the concept >w<

Developer

Thanks for playing, it was fun watching you play the game :))

Submitted(+1)

The ancient Greek vase art style looks absolutely stunning and having the descending Sword of Damocles replace the health bar is such a genius thematic touch!

Submitted(+1)

I think having damage values on the cards without knowing how much health an enemy has makes it hard to do actual strategy, but the style and animations of this game are really good, and the theming is on point. I wish there were definitions of some of the terminology somewhere, which might have been clearer if I had played Slay the Spire before maybe? But I unfortunately have not. Cool game!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, I wish we just didn't have damage values in the cards at all. We wanted to go for the old-school roguelike feeling of trying to figure out what things do by playing them. The terminology is vague on purpose to encourage multiple attempts and experimenting, haha. The first change I wanna make to the game is just remove all the numbers from the game basically xd

Submitted(+2)

I'm crying, this is incredible!! I can't believe such a masterpiece was created in just 96 hours!!:))

Submitted(+1)

I was wondering where my health bar was at the start of the game, then i saw the sword coming down after a bit of damage, that's a really cool way of depicting a health bar. All the mechanics were easily understood, it's a very simple game but has a lot of room for complexity.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and I am glad you had fun :) We really want to keep building more complexity and content for the game in the future, hoping to break my bad habit of not doing post-jam updates this year lol

Submitted(+1)

What a gem! Genuinely insane this was made in 96 hours. The art and gameplay is amazing and I am a HUGE fan of roguelike deckbuilders so this was right up my ally. I loved the gameplay, my only feedback is I felt I didn't have to think about what cards to play since you can play them all! Overall the vibe and core gameplay loop is phenomenal, well done!!

Developer(+1)

I am happy you enjoyed our game, we put a lot of hard work into it. I agree, I wish we could have made more strategy and unique interactions for the cards and enemies. But our gameplay loop got finalized pretty close to the deadline, and we definitely did not playtest & balance enough hehe

Submitted(+1)

Really really solid game. The art is wonderful and the vibe is perfect. Took me a little while to understand the strategy but once I got it I had a really good time. I'd like if it were a little more obvious that there was a sword lowering above me at the start though.
Good game!

Developer

Thanks for playing, im glad you enjoyed the game :) Yeah, we hid the sword on purpose because we wanted players to miss it initially and then have like an "Oh crap" moment once they realize, but that concept didn't really fit a jam playthrough that well haha
