Mouse controls are bugged, Sometimes I couldn't turn right or look down. It was really annoying. The game is probably good though

Developer

This is the first time anyone has reported this. Could you clarify more of what was happening?

Could you share if you were in fullscreen? If the screen had captured your mouse focus and which OS and browser you are using please?

This game made me laugh so much, it is genius!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing, I'm really happy to hear you had a good laugh. Appreciate you taking the time to play and comment.

Submitted(+1)

This one was super engaging, I got the Stanley Parable vibes right away. It immediately triggered the urge to defy everything I was told to do! I appreciated being able to rebind my controls as I'm not a WASD user, that was very nice to have in a jam game. The one bug I ran into was most of the controls I rebound gave me the duplicate key popup, perhaps because the first key I bound (P) was already assigned, though the others definitely were not. Fantastic work, I enjoyed breaking your game!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your excellent feedback.

I'm really pleased that you were incentivised to defy, it's be so interesting reading the comments from all the players and how some people are hardwired to comply and others are hardwire to defy. The creators of Portal and the Stanley Parable shared similar anecdotes at GDC about not knowing how people will respond, it's all been very interesting!

Thank you for letting me know about the duplicate key popup, I'm going to have a look into that today and see if I can get that fixed. It might be because it's just a dumb check that looks for any duplicates and not just checking the newly bound key. Regardless, I'll look to sort that out so thank you!

Thank you for playing and I hope you had fun.

I enjoyed so much playing it!! The voice acting made me laugh ; I made my boyfriend play so I know now that you have multiple endings, which I find actually impressive.

Thank you !

Léa  - La Piraterie

Developer

Thank you both so so much for taking the time to play. I'm so happy you got to see both endings as well!

I really appreciate your kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed my amateur voice acting! Thank you again.

A splendid Stanley Parable hommage ^^ I didn't go far unfortunately as I couldn't manage to press at 0s exactly (can we reach it actually ? I reached 0.01 like 8-9 times x) ) But I really enjoyed what I played and am sure the rest is as fun ! :)

Developer

Just in case you want to go back to it. You're not actually supposed to get the timer at 00:00. You can click the plug :).

I hope you're willing to give it another crack!

Aaaaah smart xD

Finished it with my girlfriend, we had a lot of fun ! Congrats on the game ! :D

Thank you for giving it another go, I'm happy to hear you had fun!

I lol'd at The Panley Starable :D Great game sorry for destroying it :P

Developer(+1)

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to destroy my game! Appreciate it :D. Glad you had fun.

I'm not sure if I broke the game but I couldn't do anything after jumping in the circle. The jump count wasn't going down and the voice stopped so idk if there was more to do. Found 19 coins tho. I thought the /17 was part of the joke but according to your comment below it feels like there were only supposed to go up to 17?? Also I wanted to break the game so I interacted with everything before the voice could explain, which means I had no idea what any of the minigames actually were about XD Maybe you want to prevent that to not confuse the player, even if it's their fault lol. For the bomb my cursor was locked on the center so idk what I was supposed to be doing, I just threw it on the wall at some point somehow. From the voice, I guess I was supposed to throw it out the window instead? For the jump circle, I just avoided it and went back to collect the coins, maybe that caused an issue? I'm a very evil player. Had fun tho.

I challenge you to break my game now.

Developer

Hi, it does sounds like you're the first person to actually break the game!

So were you jumping up and down over and over in the circle and the counter didn't go down at all? I'd really like to get to the bottom of what happened here. There was one additional room after that point, but you were nearly at the end.

No no that is part of the joke, you can get way over the 17 :D. The bomb was working as intended by the sounds of things. That is a 'bug'. But by bug here I mean an intention one that the 'developer' of the story accidentality left in.

I would really appreciate if you'd be able to clarify what happened with the jump circle. I.e. if you just jumped once, or you were jumping and nothing was happening. Thank you!

Submitted(+1)

So the voice presented the jump room, but instead of going to the circle, I went around and saw the coin counter screen. So I started going back to the other rooms to collect the coins. Still avoiding the circle. Once I couldn't interact with anything else (a solid 2 min), I went to the circle but nothing happened when I jumped. I tried jumping in place, jumping off the circle,... but nothing happened.

Developer(+1)

Oki doki, thank you. I'm just going to have a look into that and then I'll try your game out!

Developer

Unfortunately I can't seem to replicate the issue at all. The detection area / variables that allow jumping are not mutated by anything in the game that is outside of that room. What OS / Browser are you using if I may ask? And just to absolutely confirm, you went inside the circle, pressed the spacebar and nothing happened? The counter remained at 10 too I presume?

I'll check your game out now, and I'll have to explore this in more detail I think!

Submitted(+1)

That's right, that's what I've done. I'm on Windows 10, Vivaldi browser. Yes it stayed at 10.

Submitted(+1)

I also had this problem with the jump circle not working. When I jumped normally the number was not counting down. For some reason though, I was able to get it to work by jumping in a very specific spot while walking into the circle and spamming space bar at the back of the circle facing the counter. No clue how this worked but it did. Great game btw!

Developer

Thank you for sharing this, I definitely need to try and suss out what's going on here, it seems to be a pretty rare bug that's only affecting a few people.

Would you be able to share your OS and browser that you were using please?

Thank you for sticking with it and finding a way for it to work as well! Really appreciate you taking the time to play the game, hope you had fun despite the jump circle trying to sabotage you!

Developer

Scratch that - great news I've found the cause. It's a race condition caused by a mismatch between the physics process and some checks being done in the _process loop. And this race condition manifests when the framerate is under 60.

I'll be able to get a fix sorted, thank you very much for reporting this.

Submitted(+1)

Really funny writing and voice acting, this is the most complete feeling incomplete game I've ever seen. Also, great reward for getting all the coins!

I got 2 endings (not sure if there's more), and had a good time trying to break the game in as many ways as possible. You accounted for an alarming amount of possibilities.

The only thing I'd adjust is the beginning section by adding some way for returning players to bypass everything up until the first countdown room. Maybe there could be a hidden dev-door that's only seen at the end of the game. The beginning is a great introduction to the game, but during my later playthroughs it felt like more of an obstacle I had to wait through before I could really try breaking things. Granted it's possible I missed something that would allow me to skip it (I am not the most observant person), and I can't really fault a jam game that much for having one slight issue with pacing that only becomes apparent after your first playthrough.

Great work with this!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and this is amazing feedback.

While I was developing and testing, I would unlock all the doors and teleport myself to the room I needed to test - but of course you're right that this need also applies to players who want to play and look for new dialogue / endings. This is such an excellent suggestion, and frankly it could be done in a meta way too with some accompanying dialogue. I'm going to look into implementing something like this for a post-jam update just in case anyone in the future wants to have a good explore around, without having to go through the start every-time. It works for the first time (and granted most people only seem to play once, but thereafter there needs to be something speeding it up.

I should say on that note, thank you for your kinds words, and I'm over the moon that you found enough enjoyment that you wanted to come back and find the other endings and secrets! I take it you managed to jump out of the level? In total there are two main endings, and there is some variation in dialogue when you reach the ending depending on the manner by which you reached it. There is a variable called defiance, which is basically how many times you've broken something, and the dialogue in the ending changes based upon this. Technically you can finish every mini-game as 'intended' and you'll get a unique dialogue, although it's almost impossible!

Thank you for taken the time to play, and play again, and for writing out your feedback. I'm going to have a look at putting a skip into the game for 2nd playthroughs and beyond, thank you!

Submitted(+1)

As soon as I saw the window all I wanted to do was find a way to jump out of it (I am fine, by the way).

After doing that and some brief experimenting I'm fairly convinced it's possible to properly jump out of bounds in a way you may have not intended since the jump, crouch, and collisions seem just janky enough to allow for that under the right circumstances. I haven't yet found those circumstances though, but I'll come back if you make that post-jam version and keep looking.

Astonishingly I also managed to beat the first minigame as 'intended' on my first try, so I did hear some of the unique dialogue for playing 'correctly'. Never managed to replicate that though.

Developer(+1)

Haha jolly good! The window is working as intended then!

Yeah I think it's possible too, I've tried a bunch myself and I think the best chance of getting yeeted out of the level is in the first timer room, probably messing with either the button plinth, or more likely, the wire as it's a bunch of rigidbodies on pin joints. I think crouching / standing / jumping into them at the right angle will break the physics.

The crouching works by shrinking and then expanding the player collision shape dynamically, so there may well be something there to break lol!

You're only the second person to manage to do that!! I've still not managed to do it and I must have played through that room hundreds of times by now 😂.

I LOVE it Super Great Game Hilarious and Overall aJoy to play 10/10 Super fun. also the spinning i felt like i was shaking and spinning super well done!

Developer

Thank you! And thanks for taking the time to play, so glad you enjoyed yourself!

Submitted(+1)

I remember I got 1 millisecond and I genuinly got ragebaited and clicked on the wire, which was the solution. The designs of the puzzles are on the spot! This game also has some portal 2 vibes to it, I love it!

Developer

Oh that's hilarious! What I would have done to have witnessed that.

While I was developing the game, I watched a GDC talk from the developers of Portal 2 and it was absolutely an inspiration, specifically the general interactions with Wheatley, and him not being very good at his job. I'm thrilled the general vibe came across.

Thank you for taking the time to play and share your thoughts, I'm so happy you had fun.

Submitted(+1)

Wow! Loved every second of this short game! The voice acting is very good! One of my favourite entries for sure.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much!! So happy to hear you enjoyed it and for such high praise.

Thank you for taking the time to check it out :)

Submitted(+1)

I think I destroyed it and I am proud of myself. Great game, narrative and graphics (I liked the shaders at the end, not during the spinning). Also, I somehow managed to get 18 coins which I don’t know is intended, I don’t think it triggered any side dialogue.

Developer

That you so much for playing and your comment. 18 coins? It does sound like you were indeed breaking things! But yes, there's not any additional dialogue for the coins as they were a last day addition to the game.

Many thanks for your time and for playing.I hope you had fun!

Submitted(+1)

Great job, whenever I see a Stanley-like in a jam I always brace myself for bad audio quality and iffy VA but you really nailed it here. I'm curious if you actually recorded 100 different voice lines for the feedback section?

Developer (2 edits) (+2)

Thanks so much, it was my first time attempting any VA so I'm really grateful that it seems to have come off alright and has been enjoyed!

Great question, for that section I recorded voice-lines for the following scores / brackets:

  • Exactly 1, 50 or 100
  • Brackets of 2-20, 21-40, 41-60, 61-80 and 81-99 if it was not one of the above numbers
  • And then 3 additional voice-lines if the player presses another score button after the voiceline based upon their original score:
    • <40 - "Noo, you've already told me how much I suck."
    • 41-59 - "No no no! You only get one chance, you weren't decisive enough
the first time. That's on you."
    • >60 - "No no, no backsies! You already told me how great I am."

I tried my best to litter the game with dialogue that somewhat matched what was or has happened. So there's a few ways to play through and you can get some different dialogue throughout and 2 distinct endings (with a couple of variations within those)

Thank you for taking the time to play, really appreciate it!

I thought what do you mean unfinished game  i started it , i was like ok now next , and next and next so i was like its an amazing experence like how you added your voice and every level was crazy fun to play loved the game thankyou to let me play an amazing game which is unfinshed. hehehhehe

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for taking the time to QA test my unfinished game!

Really appreciate you taking the time to play and your kind words, hope you had fun!

i rated 5 star  in each section i really loved it

Developer(+1)

That's so generous of you, and I'm absolutely chuffed that you enjoyed it so much. I can't wait to play your game

Submitted(+1)

Here I am thinking "oh this gives off Stanley Parable vibes" and I get a Stanley Parable rip-off joke in-game.

I loved it, nice self contained experience, and I was genuinely amused by the jokes.

The VA was top notch.

And knowing that the shader receptacle is an actual thing that does something and not just a meme makes it even funnier.

If I had to criticize anything its the weird shift → crouch binding, my muscle memory kept making me crouch when I wanted to move quicker.

If that was intentional then, hats off to you, you got me ahaha.

Developer (3 edits) (+1)

Thank you for playing and such a detailed comment! It's really appreciated.

Haha glad you enjoyed it, however you signed an NDA, so I'm going to sue you now for disclosing it's existence publicly!

So the shift crouch binding is a real pain point for me. So the story is, I originally had it bound to CTRL and the toggle turned off. However as it happens, the bind to close a browser tab is often also CTRL+W. So at the last second had to change it. I don't like it and I don't really know what the solution is!

I'm really glad you enjoyed the humour and my amateur voice acting, I really appreciate your time and feedback, thank you.

Actual Feedback

Good game! I didn’t get any coins or anything but the (presumably) normal ending was great on its own. VA is well done, but I had audio issues in the first couple minutes. Still, I understand that’s not your fault. Overall the game felt very professional and doesn’t really seem like something made in 4 days! Nice job

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and taking the time out to share your feedback. And thanks very much for the kind words on the VA.

On the audio clipping. I've done a little more investigation after the first report of issues and while the web export being single-threaded is the bottleneck; I have discovered there are definitely a few things I could and should have done better with the power of hindsight. It is a more general performance issue that is manifesting within the audio for the player on slightly lower end systems.

I was very conscious with the quantity of dialogue recorded with the branching and random bits of extra narration you can unlock, that the zip size would become too large, so all the dialogue, music and sfx are all stored as .ogg and this is really expensive to decode on the cpu. I should have used mp3 / wav for the sfx that's being played constantly.

I've also got a pretty terrible level layout considering I didn't get time to put any occlusion culling in, it gets better as you move through the game, but I really should have at least hidden some rooms until you come to them or got to basic culling setup. As in that first room there's probably a good 800 or so extra draw calls that don't need to be happening. OOPS.

Hope that puts a little meat on the bones - every day is a school day!

Thank you for playing and your comment.

Submitted(+1)

That was really fun! I like the meta idea that you as a developer had to come up with ways to intentionally "break" the game and then have to respond to it in-universe as if you really are frustrated.

I managed to find 21/17 coins before nuking the repo, I'm so sorry that nobody is able to play this unfinished game anymore. It's a good thing that that NDA, that I totally did not sign of course, is also gone.

Good stuff! Thoroughly enjoyed it :D

Developer

Haha thank you for playing and rating. I was certainly thinking about what I would do to try and break a game while planning it out, it helped me squash quite a few bugs that usually might have slipped through!

You found 21/17? Sounds like someone has been breaking my game... tsk tsk!

Really happy to hear you enjoyed it, thank you for your time and thoughtful comment.

Submitted(+3)

I somehow stopped the timer at 00:00 on my first try, I felt like a god. Great game, great voice acting, great storytelling and very meta. Good job!

Developer

You didn't!??!?

I believe you are the first person to actually do it, all through development and testing I never actually managed to stop it on 00:00. Absolute god gamer right here. I don't remember if I even recorded any voice lines for it because I didn't think it was realistic anyone would actually win 😂.

Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

There was a voiceline! We actually thought it was a scripted event, but it seems i just got insanely lucky. Either that or I'm insanely good, not sure :)

Developer

Oh my, I had to go back and check my project to see what I recorded - that's how you know it's rare when the dev can't even remember what's supposed to happen!

Submitted(+1)

This game was soo awesome holy crap! The Panley Starable vibe is immaculate, and you found so many ways to implement the theme haha. And for one person, the polish is crazy good! We had a lot of fun playing it, keep making games dude!

Developer(+1)

Oh my thank you so much for such a lovely comment! I'm really over the moon that you both enjoyed it. Thank you so much for taking the time to play and share your thoughts, I really appreciate it.

Submitted(+1)

Really fun little stanley-like game - it doesn't do anything revolutionary, but that's because it doesn't need to. The humour can be a bit rough at times, but it manages to land most of it, and when it did land it worked really well.

Lovely bit of programmer humour for sure, and everything manages to fit together with a surprisingly quaint 'developer' charm to it.

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to play and for your feedback.

The humour was the biggest concern for me during development; because there's such a fine line between funny and cringe. I was constantly sending jokes, videos and all that to people to get some sort of litmus test for what worked. I also watched a few GDC talks from both the Stanley Parable and Portal devs and they spoke at length about during their play-testing just having random stuff that wouldn't land at all. So it was a big concern. For the most part it seems to have worked for most people at least.

Appreciate your time mate!

Submitted(+1)

Humour is definitely something that's really difficult to pull off in video game format - but you managed to do pretty well here!
