This is so neat! Yeah, there's a bit of an entry curve, but I went in intending to take my time with it and figure it out, and I only needed to reference the description info on one or two aspects. (The different boxes in the shop was one. The other was trying to see if there was a guide to the encounter symbols. I figured out the green ones, the shop, the basic battle, but there was at least one other I was uncertain about.)

I failed my first rift *very badly*, but went back to the start, looked through the modules again, actually took a shield this time, figured out that multiple weapons is better than one big weapon, went back in, and started succeeding. Then once you can start investing points into the Career, things *really* start to snowball in your favor!

No, the game doesn't hold your hand — it definitely doesn't do that! — but I also think that there are enough context clues that there aren't all that many aspects that aren't *figure-outable*.

The presentation is — ahem — *stellar*. The scene transitions in particular are A+, the spritework (especially the backgrounds) is fantastic, and this is a tiny, weird thing to highlight, but I really love the rotating title screen menu. I dunno, something about it's just really nice.

Genuinely great job on this one.

Thanks for playing and really humbled by this review. The initial learning curve is steep and some of the bugs (particularly one with pip bars in the combat view) don’t help to clear things that much either. If used to this game genre a lot of things are reasonably easy to deduct, if new to these games it can be puzzling and even frustrating. My unhealthy obsession with finishing polish also used a lot of my time in that and not in covering a solid manual or trying to put in a tutorial but i think the end result is good enough to match my polish level standards. Glad that you had fun playing it!

Oh, on the menu… I needed space for too many options so i thought in a rolo-dex style menu as i had already the rotation on ship selection too

Great presentation and technical depth. I'll have to come back to it to git gud, as it seems it'll require a lot of player time investment to get the most out of it! That's not a bad thing, as a Paradox gamer this is norm. For a jam game it's very impressive!

thanks for playing! The game went heavily over scope :P (well it’s not that the scope was not initially in my mind…) Complexity around the gameplay kept growing and I think I managed to get enough of it in as to have an interesting result… the pain point is lack of guidance. This thing requires a full tutorial (that it has no space to squeeze in…) that will need to be replaced by some manual or some video or whatever. PICO8 limitations are getting in the way here :P (even though I am already bugfixing some stuff and trying to get the space cleared for a few eye-candy extras I could not fit in the carts during the jam). I am pretty stubborn, so I am committed to get a decently complete version up and running in pico8 alone, but most probably this project will jump over love2D or something else to be a “complete” game covering everything… even staying at 64x64 as redoing a lot of art at a bigger scale is daunting (and I am a pig for 64x64 eyecandy…). Just hoping the experience was good and you enjoyed the game so far!

The overall visuals look stunning with plenty of animations, and the level of polish is remarkably high. However, it would be great if there were a tutorial for the gameplay.

Developer

Totally fair… I got too deep in scope and there was no space/time to fit that in. Already working on a rewrite/refactor that can potentially make the room for it. Thanks for playing!

Very impressive presentation! Every interaction feels juicy and satisfying, and that music is just perfect.

Thank you, Vav is a great musician, I managed to get him joining and preparing some tracks. Glad you liked the game, thnx for playing!

This game is so cool! Very impressive use of the resolution. Was kind of overwhelming at first but once I figured out what the icons meant it was a lot of fun

Developer

Yes, a bit too much info and no tutorial… But glad you got it and enjoyed the game! Thnx for playing

I like the art style a lot! The UI is neatly organized and accessible.

There is a surprising amount of depth and polish for a game jam entry. Impressive!

Had a lot of fun figuring out all the builds and tactics.

Great game you have here!

Thank you! Sticking strictly to PICO-8’s default 16-color palette was a massive,self-impossed challenge—I usually reorg colors like crazy :P—but I really think I got a look that feels unique and somewhat “un-PICO-8.”

It was a marathon of 12+ hour days battling engine limits and brain-melting logic to squeeze so much in. Since there’s no proper tutorial, I was really nervous it would feel too unforgiving or confusing, so I’m thrilled to hear you had fun with it and cracked the ship configuration piece! I’m already planning a rewrite to iron out the balance and polish those rough edges (and probably add more variations for ships, loadouts, anomalies, etc). Thanks for playing!

Really fun after understanding the game! Although I wished there was a tutorial as it's quite a lot to take in.

Great game!

Developer(+1)

I would love it too! Had no time, cart space or energy to get that in… But planning on a post jam rewrite that also includes it. Thnx for playing!

Really impressive! Didn't know PICO-8 could do 3D effects like that—the block transition is a solid 10/10. Got slightly lost with ship building and the early fights since there's so much content (had to check the page text a few times), but it's a very solid project. Congratulations!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks! That is basically maths… Nothing pico natively provides. I know the game is dense, need to work on a way to add an initial tutorial rift run. Thnx for playing!

Nice graphics. Did find overwhelming there are 2 pages of instructions and didn't read them...

I know… Complex game if you are not used to this kind of genre… Needs a tutorial rift run but i run out of space and time for that, planned as a post jam thing after i can make the space. Thnx for playing!
