Themes
I suppose "Pattern Recognition" fits, but that's incidental. I've been wanting to de-make this for ages!

Tooling
Godot 4 and Aseprite! This is the first time I've touched Godot 4, and some of the new stuff was *so* useful. Subtweens! There are subtweens now! Made animating card-flipping a dream.

Unique and interesting concept. Loved the aesthetic and music.
Enjoyed the game as well, but couldn't progress in tournament for some reason, even though i won.
Couldn't figure out how to get combos either.

Developer

Each region of the tournament has 10 matches — the dots fill up as you beat them. My guess is that you won but didn't see the dot change? You have to clear a region before moving on to the next.

Combos are only triggered via Plus/Same/SameWall rules, so the early tournament regions won't have those available. If you turn on those rules in Settings, you can play with them right away in Freeplay!

Anyway, thanks so much for playing!

This is a really cool concept. I need a bit more time to wrap my head around it, but I think it's awesome.

Developer

Thanks so much for playing! I hope it clicks for you, and you get half as much enjoyment from it as I have!

Nice game, takes a bit to get all the rules in, but it’s a lot of extra fun when they click in place. Nice visuals and audio too. Great job!

Thanks so much for playing! Appreciate the kind comment.

I'm impressed you managed to fit so much detail into such a small amount of space. Everything about this felt super polished, loved the effects and animations.

Developer

Thanks so much! Appreciate it.

I lost a couple of times before finally getting the hang of it, but once it clicked, it got really interesting! Great project and fun gameplay. Congrats on completing the game!

I have not played the original game, so I went to see some screenshots, and I’d say you got the look right!

The gameplay is interesting, though I’ll admit I did not understand the more advanced-seeming rules as explained in the game’s description.

Still, the vibe is very nice, both in terms of music and graphics.

Good job overall!

Developer

Thanks so much!

To be *so* real with you — I knew from the start that this would definitely be a made-for-me project. The worst part about demaking Triple Triad is just... then having to explain how to play Triple Triad! I've had this game living rent-free in my head for decades, I *get* the rules, but I totally understand how other folks might not. I can say "plus triggers if any two pairs of touching numbers add to the same value" or "same triggers if any two pairs of touching numbers match" all day long, but it's almost like there's a switch that needs flipped in the brain and until that switch of understanding is flipped it just sounds like I'm describing moon logic!

At least with the Freeplay, you can turn the more complex rules off entirely.

Anyway, thanks for playing!

Took a while to get into it, but I played it for a long time =)

I like the combo system, it's so satisfying if you can trigger it.

A few times it seemed that my cards were just not good enough to have any chance at winning. Maybe there was? But it would be nice to know there is always a strategy to win.

Cool little brain teaser you have here!

The combo system feels SO good when you trigger it, and SO bad when the AI does! Hahah.

In the Freeplay mode, the decks are roughly balanced — each player gets 2 cards of levels 1-5, 2 cards of levels 6-7, and 1 card of levels 8-10. *Generally* this balance is enough to have a chance! In the Tournament mode, I'll be honest, I could have done a better job with balancing the starting cards, and I really could have / should have given a "pity" card or two if you lose a Tourney match a few times. Ah well.

Thanks for playing!

Holy complexity Batman! Really well done with all the menus, settings, visual hints, etc. but I lack the attention span to delve into it fully. Great Job!

Thanks for playing! Appreciate the kind comment.

Amazing! I must confess I never played the FF8 version, only  the similar but different Tetra Master from FF9. This was really fun. Gret job!

Developer

It's funny, Tetra Master was the one that I tried, hated, and booted up FF8 to play Triple Triad instead!

Thanks for playing!

This is an adorable game! The art is well made, and I always like when games try to make complex systems. Sadly, this time the complexity was lost on me, as I feel like the biggest drawback of the game is that the actual goal and rules aren't explained properly. I feel like just writing a few paragraphs into the game description would do this game wonders, because it took me almost 20 minutes to figure out how turning cards work. While now I understand the basic rule of the game that a higher number turns adjacent opponent cards, I only got one win, and I don't understand what I did to deserve that win. Every aspect of this game, the supposed deck building part, the combos, the elemental system feels very well designed, but it just feels, because I don't understand how I could interact with it.

In the middle of writing this comment, I realized that this is a demake of an existing game. Now I understand why I don't understand the mechanics. Still, a tutorial or a rule dump of some sorts would've been nice. I'm not sure how to rate this game, because I don't want to give a bad rating to the gameplay that is probably good, but the lack of explanation sets it back, and I'm not sure if knowing Triple Triad can be considered required knowledge in this jam. Still, really charming game, I just couldn't figure it out.

Developer

Thanks for the comment!

If I'm totally honest with you, it never occurred to me to explain the basics like "you want to have more cards your color" or "bigger number flips". I figured people might be tripped up by some of the more complex rules, so I explained those. Not sure what you mean by "supposed deck building" either! I went ahead and added some more text to the game page description, maybe that will help others.

This is a game that I largely made for, well, for me. I've been wanting a way to play Triple Triad, so I made that.

It's okay if you didn't enjoy it. Thank you for giving it a chance.

Very fun, I never played FF8 but I played another remake of Triple Triad and this definitely has a similar feel. I wasn't sure how to get combos (which is probably just a result of me not really knowing how the game works lol).

Developer (1 edit)

Combos can happen after you trigger Plus / Same / Same Wall (which is just Same but walls count as A). If a card is flipped by those special rules, it'll Combo flip any neighboring cards with lower numbers. Combos can chain! (Plus/Same/SWall/Combo don't care about elemental adjustments, by the way. I don't know why they decided to do it that way in the OG, but they did!)

I desperately wanted to have in-game rules primers but had to settle for making some diagrams for the game page instead. I know that some of the rules are kind of just A Lot, hah.

Thanks for playing!
