Aug, you are in VERY good company. I went through about a million ideas as well before settling on one.
I think using the system, or any SRD for an original story or world is always a fun way to look at that world a different way.
I definitely already see the story in your summary and it looks compelling! Is the player closing off the forest for their protection or to keep others from being cursed as well?

The thought I had is that it's to spare others, but I've been thinking a lot about what the victory (and the failure) should actually look like. And I'm also toying with how I might adapt some ideas that aren't so heroic. For example, you have your Allies, but they may not share that goal, so depending on how things shake out there could very well be some trade off that gets you closer to your goal or more innately powerful by abandoning your Allies. But it's all for the sake of saving others from your fate, right?
Lots to consider with the design space, and I'm getting more comfortable with the system so I'm hoping I can pull off some interesting things!
Oh, the tension of that narrative is really powerful. Sometimes our allies and friends may work at cross purposes to our own goals. Either way the idea is really neat.
It’s a good base plot for the game so this is one that has some good “legs” from the get-go.
