Fun game! I love the artwork, really impressed with how much you got out of the limited colour palette. I like the little details like in the falling animation with the hat coming off.
The controls felt a bit unusual at first with W throwing dynamite and mouse clicking to shoot but I got used to it quickly. The enemy placements got a bit cramped near the end but I felt I had the tools to overcome them. And when I struggled the checkpoints were generous enough I wasn't deterred to stop. Only minor annoyance was while the boss arriving cutscene was happening I was getting attacked by a falling bomb. Feels like a Gameboy game!
First off the artwork is phenomenal, the backgrounds are vibrant, and the main character has plenty of personality, enjoyed the hat popping off on a jump. Mechanics were spot on for an action platformer, amazing game!
Had to check out all my fellow "Black Gold" interpretation games. I really like how you captured the vibes of the era with the choice of color and art it looks really good! The movement feels great as well. As others said some I-Frames would have been nice otherwise you can get comboed to death by the turrets(we made the same mistake with our game as^well so i get it^^). Other then that nice game and cool boss fight in the end!
The graphics look great and the whole shooter vibe feels strong. The slide is fun and the animated backgrounds give the stage a lot of energy. Some projectile moments get a bit chaotic and the lack of post hit safety makes certain spots rough, but the presentation is polished and the idea lands well. (pls play my game)
The first impression is really strong on this one. The title screen is a standout, and the animated backgrounds are great. As far as controlling the character goes, I liked the way that Down immediately makes you slide.
The music track can get a little repetitive. I'm not sure if this was just my ear, but it sounded like it hitched slightly when looping.
Overall the one stage that's here is cute enough. The scorpion enemies are fun to take out with the gun while it felt like there were a few places where the turrets were placed so that you just had to wait for your dynamite to recharge. Sometimes the parachute bombs would spawn in such a way that there was no feasible way to avoid them, which was minorly annoying
The real sting is that there's no invincibility upon taking damage. This is very unfortunate, as you can get caught against a corner and juggled to death by an enemy with very little recourse. That's not too big a deal in the stage, but it did make the final boss of the game quite annoying. There were multiple times I would simply get trapped between two turrets that he would spawn and killed that way,. So it took a few tries and I'd say it tanked whatever fun I was having. Still! It's just a small matter of pushing thru to the end.
Overall? Great look. I didn't talk a lot about the sprites above, but there's a lot of them and they're very handsome. The character's moveset feels pretty okay. But the game is sorely missing a post-hit invincibility window! All in all, nice work. Also: Controller support worked great!! That's huge!
Thanks for the comment! I did have a post hit invuln in for a while but we were crammed on time and our color flash for when the character was damaged is that Cat would animate the actual hit effect because we couldn't figure out sprite palette indexing in Godot so with the i-frames in it'd break the animations since they're also done pretty poorly in the code I basically just call them for the state's we're in and if walking it'd run the walk animation and if hit priority was the damaged animation so you'd just gliding around flashing or walking around invincible without any indication
So I kinda just picked the worse of the two options, I regret not having more time but this was very chaotic haha Gamejams are tough!
The music totally is not synced too, I was trying to learn how to use a tracker. I play acoustic guitar and had a nice westerny type finger pick loop I wrote and couldn't translate it properly to the tracker, and ended up just throwing bleeps and bloops down that didn't sound hoooorible but couldn't figure out how to end the loop properly in furnace
My wife cat is so happy with your comments on her artwork, she's never done this too and is just so happy with everyone's opinions
Thanks for the review!!
It was a great game! The graphics and sound design was great. It could get annoying when there was a lot of projectiles on the screen and you would get bounced around my them, but overall I had a lot of fun and felt just like a gameboy game. A lot of fun!
Very beautiful graphics. You made a very beautiful game despite the color palette constraint and the resolution constraint. The slide feels very cool. Feels very gameboy-ish. I enjoyed this game!
Thank you so much! It was so fun working around the requirements, definitely was inspiring to design and build around the challenges. Appreciate you so much for taking the time to play and review! - Cat
This is genuinely polished in a way very few gamejam games are. The animations are detailed and colorful (I lolled the first time I killed a scorpion and a grave literally popped out, or when I died falling into a hole and my body went into skeleton). Even walking has multiple frames of animation and interaction!
This is a very nice megaman tribute though I must wish that you had chosen literally anything else for shooting your gun. Primary mouse click did not work very well on my laptop where I was playing with a trackpad. Still I appreciate that you took into account left handed players and offered both wasd and arrow keys to move. That's thoughtful!
Rating it high on graphics, and fun. And how can I not call it a gameboy spirit game when Megaman is on gameboy? Also taking "old gold" as a theme and turning it into the oil rush of the 19th century, and making it about oil was inspired.
Great little game!
Thank you so much for your comment! Really appreciate you for the thorough review, and the helpful feedback about keybinds; will definitely keep that in mind for future projects! Thanks so much for taking the time to play! -Cat
Don't you just hate when someone throws scorpions at you from a hot air balloon? Great little game, nice work!
Thanks for the comment! I'm not sure how he had that many scorpions in that balloon lol
