How does your game meet GBJam's theme
In Kota Chomp, the longer poop sits on the board, the older it gets, until it turns to gold.

This Old Gold is the ultimate food, helping Kota grow stronger and faster.

The more Old Gold you consume, the closer you get to becoming a GOLDEN GOD!

Poop grow old. Poop turn gold.

Eat, grow, poop, and become the golden god of all kots.

I really liked this interpretation of the snake-type game! I think the theming was charmingly goofy, and I especially liked the way that your body 'severs' when biting yourself and can be eaten afterwards. Making this in GBStudio is impressive! I'm sure working within the constraints of the original hardware takes a lot of additional skill and consideration.

It's also been super cool to see someone very invested in the Jam as a whole, with the community post you've made and the amount of games you've rated! I'm excited to see if you make any projects in the future :) Great entry all around!

Developer

Thanks so much for the kind words! We’ve been really excited about the jam. Our animator got pretty obsessed with the Game Boy homebrew scene during the pandemic, so I think we had a lot of pent-up energy when we finally decided to participate. We also spent the summer reading through our GB Studio Magazine subscription, which gave us plenty of design and programming ideas to play with.

We’d definitely like to make more games! We’re hoping to join Game Boy Compo when it runs again, and I’m also planning to submit some art to the GB Pixel Art Jam next week.

Uau, que jogo incrível! Eu poderia facilmente passar mais 3 horas jogando.

I really enjoyed this game, having the jump mechanic in a snake-like game was much welcomed.

Thanks for uploading the ROM, I'll be coming back to this game to get to 100 length.

Max length of 82 so far :)

Developer

Thank you so much for this photo! It made our day, so cute! And 82 is impressive! If you make it to 100, you evolve into a Golden Kot. Godspeed, you Kot Emperor! 🫡

Very cute game,  no notes :)

Thank you sir!

I think this game is good. It reminded me of the Snake game.

Ahahaha, I liked the golden flake sardines as a concept, because I’ve seen so many fish companies try to use gold as part of their branding/advertising! I’m terrible at snake games, and struggled a bit with delays, but the animations and sprites were adorable. I could eat so many things! I liked the music though, and felt it and the sound effects really matched the vibe of the game.

My biggest issue was when running into walls. The bounceback was a bit jarring, and it locked inputs just long enough that I could occasionally mess up my timing and, uh…. run into the wall again, oops. Overall though, a fun little game! Nice job!

Developer

Hey, yeah, I agree. I definitely noticed those lock timings during testing. At the time, I thought of it as part of the difficulty, frustrating in the same way Tetris can be. But now that you mention it, it might be something we could improve in the programming.

The evolved mode is definitely rough. I think I only broke 210 once and never managed it again. We really appreciate the feedback. It’s nice having fresh eyes on the project. If we build it into a full-length game, we’ll take a closer look at the bounce-back and some of the strobe flashing.

I wasn't expecting to play a snake-like in this jam, so that's pretty cool. I really enjoyed all of the twists you included, from the fish and the mice to eating poop and even yourself as a consequence but not necessarily an automatic lose state.

I would love to know how you managed the snake mechanic in GB Studio, especially with how much interactivity is happening.

Excellent job, super fun game!

Thanks! The cat actually only uses two sprites: the head and tail, so a 100-length cat costs the same as a 2-length one. The rest of the body is handled with tile swaps using Mico27’s MetaTile Plugin. Food and poop are tiles too.

To keep each frame light, we split the logic across several frames: head movement, tail movement, collision checks, then the mice. The mice are sprites as well.

Absolute wizardry. Thank you for the insights!

really fun idea, and a great way to interpret the 2nd theme

Neat idea!  Also, cats.  I really like being able to eat my own corpse after a mistake, suddenly turns into a slightly different game.

This was an incredibly creative take on the the prompt! I liked how you turned Snake into a more involved game with a home base, warping, and pests/hazards. And it was really cool to evolve and have to learn how to deal with the larger sprite.

I think my favorite part was the music, it was really quirky and cute, it fit the game really well!
