I've never played a fighting game like this one, it was super neat!

I really like the pacing of it - the way moves work make the game almost feel like a real-time strategy game more than a fighting game. I usually just resort to button mashing when I play fighting games, it's a skill issue on my end, so getting that extra time to think about the next move was really engaging.

The UI is definitely a bit overwhelming as a first time player - Because the moves change whenever you use one, I feel like I had my eyes glued to the bottom right corner of the screen most of the time, rather than the action happening above. It definitely got easier as I played more, but I can't help but wonder if there could be a more intuitive way to simplify the UI or have it be closer to the action. I dunno! I also think that it would be helped a bit with a proper tutorial, since these systems are so unique, but I'm sure that's something you'll add eventually. I really appreciate that you did something new, and I feel like the game has a really high skill ceiling for those who get good at it. Nice stuff!

I know you were here for the stream, but if you wanted to review anything, I played it here around 3:03:00

LMFAO THIS GAME. There were some spelling errors, such as "imployee" (unless that was intentional), but the humor is quite lewd, crude, and cracked me up. Graphics and audio are fine. Controls and understanding the combo sequence and how to time it right was difficult at times. The rng could be unforgiving and not let me have a counter to my opponent at all and I'd just get murked. Other times, it seemed like the enemy's power meter/move meter charged faster than mine, allowing them to combo me into oblivion. The learning curve is STEEP.

I know you said you didn't have time for a proper tutorial/training stage to be implemented. Having that fully fleshed out can help people understand what the different colors/move types do in relation to the enemy moves.

Overall, it's a fun and funny concept. Hope it gets fleshed out further!

Hey! With FQ9 ending soon, I wanted to let you know that I won't be able to cover your game until after the event. If you're okay with waiting, just keep the game on the event and I'll be getting around to it over the next couple of months or so. :)

Hello! I tried playing your game, too - and was really impressed with what I saw, the 3D art and the humour from the start. Unfortunately my laptop is way too weak to properly run the game though, I got like 6 FPS T-T My poor laptop is dying... so, I can't properly rate it because I couldn't experience it as intended.

Developer(+1)

Well, at least don't drop all 1-stars. You surely can properly rate Graphics or Music.

For the intended experience, try watching this stream: from the beginning, or from Classic Tower Run.

The game is supposed to run at 60FPS (fixed framerate). It's sad your machine can't handle the game performance-wise. The recommended technical requirements are: Windows-10 x64 bit, Intel Core i7 3.6GHz, 16Gb RAM, NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6Gb videomemory.

I was really happy to hear the Touhou remixes. They fit the game surprisingly well.

The combat is really fun and worked well for me. It looked a little complicated at first, but I picked it up pretty quickly. One thing I did notice in the fights against AI opponents is that some of them seem to react extremely fast. At times it felt like they could parry almost everything I threw at them, while I personally couldn't visually react to many of their attacks in time. I'm not sure whether this is more of a difficulty or readability issue, but the difference in reaction speed felt pretty noticeable.

Most of my issues were with the controls and UI. My PS5 controller wasn't detected, so I ended up playing with the keyboard instead. That was totally fine, but I couldn't find any clear hotkey guide, so I had to figure out the controls by clicking through things one by one. I seemed to be limited to Reimu, though I guess I'm not pressing the right key to switch between characters.

I also wasn't sure which options on the main menu were actually available yet. A few of them seemed to be WIP, so I found myself trying each one just to see which modes were playable. It might help to grey out or label unfinished options more clearly.

Overall, I had a good time with the combat. A little more clarity around the controls and available menu options would make the first-time experience much smoother.

Hello there! Thank You for trying this out.

- Touhou Remixes: Touhou Remixes by Tony CycloneZ (Gensokyo FighterZ Original Soundtrack)
All Human-Made by real composer. We will get even more if the game gets enough support (crowd funding).

- AI has RNG-based chances to react on Your attack, and it is difficulty based. RNG may happen to proc many times in a row, so it really will seem like they're parrying anything. Simply saying - You're just unlucky in the match, RNG beat You. The key to have more chance to beat AI is to react on their attacks instead. It may seem hard, but as You learn Your opponent's character and what behavior they could have, You could predict the incoming attack. It is a train-and-learn thing. The more You play - the better You become.

Additional note: Strike Attack comes out very fast, therefore it can be Blocked even if You already got hit. Defensive moves and Free Blocks are available as long as You are not knocked down, not launched, and not heavy staggered.

- About PS5 controller support: UE4 does not support D-Input controllers naturally. It requires additional toolchain provided by Sony to developers whose game is approved to be released for PlayStation consoles. The Game Page clearly points that available input devices are Keyboard and XBox gamepad. Not PS gamepad. However, I'm surprised how many players are playing using Keyboard instead of Gamepads. I did not care to implement Keyboard icons for UI. Going to add these in future builds.

Keyboard controls:

  • Arrow back/forth = movement
  • Z X C = three basic slots
  • LCtrl = Taunt/Amplify/Ultimate
  • Enter = Pause/Confirm
  • Spacebar = Confirm
  • TAB = Cancel, Training mode reset
  • Escape = Cancel
  • W/D = movement (alternative)
  • Numpad 1 2 3 = three basic slots (alternative)
  • Numpad 4 = Taunt/Amplify/Ultimate (alternative)
  • Numpad Enter = Pause/Confirm (alternative)
  • LShift = Character Select <<=================

- About greying out the unavailable modes: It is hard to implement it technically, as I need to add some kind of mark and detect which options are not ready, and select the line color by switch on this statement. It would be a lot of bother to spend time for implementation, plus some time to change/remove this data later when the modes are ready to play. Once again - I have many complains about the mode selection, so most certainly I should take care of this in the future as well.

Available modes are Arcade Duels and Arcade Classic Towers. Available Characters are Reimu and Marisa. Feel free to take another run and try to clear as many Floors as You can. But XBox gamepad recommended.

BASIC TUTORIAL COMING SOON IN THE NEXT BIG UPDATE (next year)
featuring +1 new character, +1 new gameplay mechanic, and Basic Tutorial
Plus (maybe) Titans Mode with Hisoutensoku vs Mega-Suika.

ATB combat is really fun, my only issue is why is it 13+ on the description here vs in the game that warns 18+

Developer

FBQ 9 Jam has only two options for Age Rating: "Family Friendly" and "13+". Sad to hear it be your issue.

Yo! I recorded my thoughts while I played in this Google Doc, although my notes were much lighter than usual with the nature of this game.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pMU7vJjTjWff9LFUe-eztMDkbxM0qpi9GTnJlnlGqpU/...

This is really fun! It’s obviously missing a lot of meat but the foundation is really strong. The combat is quite snappy, and while the mechanics seem complicated they’re very fast to grasp. One small criticism I have is the seemingly random nature of the skills you draw from your deck makes fights feel rather RNG dependent; it’s possible that there is no RNG in which case I don’t know what the determining factor is for new skills, but from my perspective playing it blind they feel arbitrary. If there is some sort of deckbuilding mechanic that could be pretty fun and cool, but otherwise I honestly would prefer if you had access to all your skills at once, even if that means reducing the total number of skills per character. I like the resource mechanic a lot, and while the animations are a bit stiff, they’re a lot better than I would expect for a game like this. There wasn’t a ton of music but I recognized some of the Touhou remixes and appreciated them. I do think the opening logo bits kinda sets off a bad first impression with how meme-y they are (and a potential legal issue too with the use of barely disguised trademarks, although this game is already in an iffy position legally), but I suppose that first impression at least lets people relax and not expect too much. I’d love to see how this game feels when it’s got more characters and content to go off of, but it’s a really strong foundation!

Welcome, Friend! So, you haven't tried to figure out how to change your character and haven't tried the Arcade Tower? There are two characters in the game actually. Controls for a keyboard are mapped to Arrow keys, ZXC, Shift, LeftCtrl, Tab. Duels are one character vs another on Hard difficulty as long as you're rematching. Opponent is chosen randomly, and matching vs Reimu all the time is a bad luck. Arcade Towers are raising from Easy to Lunatic+, vs both characters circled one after another.

About cards in hand, yes, pure 50/50 random, each slot can have one of two moves in it (RNG based), and Taunt slot may change to Amplified Attack during some moves active (QTE element). Some characters (currently Marisa) have Ultimate moves that replace your taunt slot until you use them. You have 5% Crit Chance that makes your current hit deal x2.5 times more damage, and 15% Pure Block chance after move in slot in used. However, you can't have Block in more than one slot and can't roll two Blocks consecutively. You can use Blocks or Defensive attacks while getting hit by Strike combo as long as the character is still standing on the ground. It means Blocks are also a Combo Breakers.  With all this, combat system combines the skill, reaction, and luck.

Feel free to make another run later. Best with Gamepad. Streams/Videos are much appreciated.

  • Youtube Link  / Twitch Link
  • Graphics : Functional but a bit rough, a fair few animations could do with touch up.
  • GUI : Very busy , but works.
  • Performance : Flawless
  • Music / Sfx :
    • Music : Seemed fine
    • SFX : Many of the sound effects need balancing or changes , especially at startup or the little 'take it easy' thing just infinite repeats it's TTS line.
  • Gameplay : It's a Rock, Paper, Scissors fighting game.
  • Notes :
    • Why is there a completely inexplicable combination of English, Russian and Japanese?
    • Most of the TTS lines are completely unintelligible.
    • Who is this for? Touhou fans, fighting game fans, shitpost fans?
    • Difficulty feels a bit all over the place , sometimes the AI does well, sometimes not.
  • Final Thoughts : Overall while it is functional in the combat and technical sense, it doesn't quite work for me. There's a lot of shitpost-y type of humour present which simply escapes me, combining with a lot of the gratuitous fan-service doesn't really do much for me.

Hello there! Here are the answers to Your notes:

  • Why is there a completely inexplicable combination of English, Russian and Japanese?

Because if I don't add English, You will not understand anything at all.

  • Most of the TTS lines are completely unintelligible.

TTS lines could be replaced with real voice if the game gets supported enough and I could afford to hire voice actors.

  • Who is this for? Touhou fans, fighting game fans, shitpost fans?

For all of those in general. Everyone can find something to their liking!

  • Difficulty feels a bit all over the place , sometimes the AI does well, sometimes not.

Difficulty may vary. Currently, Duels are Normal (was Hard), Towers are gradually raising from Easy to Overdrive. AI has RNG based behavior, sometimes it may proc 5 times in a row to counter Your attacks on Easy, sometimes in may not proc 5 times in a row on Hard. Sometimes AI goes for Aggressive pattern, sometimes provokes You and Blocking. AI is designed to act as close to a human as possible, and since human player may have different level of skill, the AI acts the same.
