How does your game meet GBJam's theme
So we went with a Pawn Shop theme, because you're buying old stuff from other people and can end up with some cool finds.

Such a polished and well made entry, I really love a lot of elements about this like the music and art, but next to that the gameplay loop is just very satisfying and fun! I wasn't always super succesful at when to haggle or buy at full price, but had so much fun, super well done on this entry!

Developer

Thanks so much for the kind words! I plan on adding more hints (like moodlets) to help predictability, I don't want to be too revealing about the probabilities but I also don't want it to feel like a complete gamble. :)

i really liked it, i love the feel of having my own pawn shop n_n i wished it was longer :P great one

Developer(+1)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I'll be working on this one for a month or two cause we had some ideas we didn't quite get to implement. :)

The Open and Closed signs are backwards, the Open sign faces outwards when the store is closed and the Closed sign is displayed outwards towards the customers out in the world when the store is open. 0/5 Unplayable.

JK. This was great!  Delightful character animations, terrific soundtrack, engaging haggling choices, great UX. I was waiting for the Papers Please style subplot to reveal itself, but maybe that was too much to wish for in a ten day jam. Really great experience, had a lot of fun with this!

Developer

OMG I TOLD HIM ABOUT THE SIGN LOL (you are the first person I've seen mention it!)

Thank you for playing and for the kind words! The focus has definitely been on an arcadey score attack vs a Papers Please kind of narrative; it'd be an interesting direction but I definitely don't have the writing chops to make that work right out of the gate.

Really liked the grandmas coat, I loooked incredible in it. The game is fun, not sure if there is a person to person haggle rules or they are chaning over time, but the variation made the game fun. We need the police implemented though :P appreciate the joke there

The game looks and sounds and to me it feels like it could totally be a gameboy game.

Overall lively jobs, needs the spice of the police!

Developer

Thanks! The haggle rules are not well-hinted at the moment and I'd like to be able to change that without giving too much away. :)

There was definitely too much in the original idea to implement, I figured it would be easier to explain the feature gaps in dialogue rather than hack the UI up for the jam lol.

Absolutely one of my faves from the couple dozen I've rated so far! I played it safe and mostly haggled my way through, finishing with 20 Bought / 21 Sold/ $1,594. It's a genre I'd most often skip outside of the jam but I'm really glad I didn't here. You've definitely got a ton of design space to play with too, and I'm glad it sounds like you're going to keep working on it. I'll look forward to seeing the progress!

Developer

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you checked it out despite the genre. :)

Really loved the music on this. I’ve actually left it running in the background while I work on other stuff. There’s been so much cool music in the jam, it’d be awesome to have a compilation of it all at the end.

That aside, really polished little shop game. Haggling is fun, the customers have a lot of personality, and I love the sprite work and how the team handled the UX.

I haven’t played UFO 50 yet, but now I’m really keen to try it and see where some of the inspiration came from. Great work!

Developer

Thank you! It means a lot because I used to write a lot of music and only this year really picked back up on it. :) And UI work can be really draining so I'm glad that it paid off.

Woow I loved this one. I want to do it justice in my review so I'll break it down into a few sections.

Audio: Sound design is on point, like menu select, dialogue blips, etc. Music gives this such good flavor, makes the setting  fit right in with the sardonic grimy world of Sam and Max.

Visuals: UI is classic Game Boy with modern polish. Nice use of linear perspective in the shop. Character sprites are highly expressive, the merchandise is easy to read. Skillful use of color to indicate time of day through the window lighting. Palette based fade in/out in scene transitions and on the merchandise after transactions.

Gameplay: The gameplay loop is easy to learn, and quite fun to haggle with the customers. I see there are the foundations for time/performance pressure with the "family" man, and a risk/reward system with the hot items system. If the game ever gets fully implemented, I could see myself killing a lot of time behind the counter. The UI is a little complicated when getting started, I got quick advice in Discord. To be fair, the How To Play guide explains it pretty well, if you read it 😅. An optional tutorial round with the family man would be peak design, call it my wishlist item.

Overall, this is one of my favorite entries this jam, and earned full marks from me in all categories. Nice work. Can't wait to see what else you guys cook up.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words and detailed feedback!

A quick tutorial round is on my TODO list now that I'm not under time crunch. :D

This game is simple to understand and a ton of fun, being able to scam people like in Pawn Stars but without actually hurting anyone in real life can finally be a dream come true!

Graphics are very good, music is very nice and chill, npcs have really funny personalities. I just have something to say about the touch controls that I think shouldn't exist in the game. It might break the critaries of the game boy controls of the jam, even if it makes the game easier to play, you don't really want to come back to the basic d-pad/A/B controls after trying them.

Otherwise for me it's a perfect.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Glad you enjoyed it.

Having touch controls was definitely not intentional, I don't have hooks for anything besides keyboard/gamepad presses so I think there is some built-in Godot handling with the UI nodes I overlooked. Thanks for letting me know about that!

The pawn shop mechanic is really well done, and I had fun playing it all the way to the end. Nice work!

Developer

Thank you for playing through it! Glad you had fun.

As everyone said, this game is great. I want to touch on a small thing. The font was so good. I see the credit, but even finding it and sizing/implementing it deserves credit. I fought with my font for honestly hours and i would use yours if i could go back. For a text based game, i think having a poor font would have broken the game. So to whoever on the team found this font and decided on size ect. KUDOS!

Developer(+2)

Thanks! I ended up getting a bundle with a bunch of different monospace fonts (https://2bitcrook.itch.io/44-game-boy-fonts) and experimenting with which one looked best, and then we agreed on Everybit Original.

Fonts can be a pain in Godot if you're working with Pixel Art. The important stuff:

1. You have to change the Font Import settings per font to remove things like Anti-Aliasing and Sub-Pixeling. It is not enough to change your project settings unfortunately.

2. Only resize them to multiples of its native size (in this case 8, 16, 24, etc).

If you (or anyone reading) plans on using pixel fonts in Godot, I hope that this can help save some headache in the future. :)

Found myself *really* getting into this.  It is, perhaps, a little too easy to just Haggle your way through the game, but that's not really a complaint.  I'm sure I could have scored much higher had I been more aggressive with the Highballing and Lowballing, but the few times I used it I got rejected more often than not.  High marks all around. :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks again for playing this on stream!

By design I definitely want players to at least haggle, with the generous offer being more for secondary benefits or special events (neither of which I had time for unfortunately), or to guarantee buying a rare item without an angry customer.

If it felt a little cheaty to haggle for profit, I think fits the setting. ;)

Submitted

I like it. Profit, profit, profit! You wanted constructed feedback - it's just random whether someone agree or not, I can't predict anything. But whole game is solid and well made. I think you nailed it :)

Developer

Thanks for playing and giving feedback!

That's totally valid criticism. Customers have a chance to accept, counter-offer, or walk away based on how fair your offer is, and part of the design is that the player doesn't have access to perfect information about those odds.

But I don't want players to be totally in the dark, either. I have some ideas on how to introduce the baseline odds and then adding certain hint indicators (facial expressions, more dialogue, etc). Thank you!

Wow, lots of fun!

I felt like a sick b*stard every time I tried to highball the old dude, but damn it felt good.  Super cute game with lots of character!

The graphics and sound conveyed the right atmosphere/vibe, very well done.  The dialogue was well written, and was very important to help the player deduce who was worth hustling.

Developer

I'm glad you had fun, thanks for playing and for the kind words!

Great game! I just completed the 5-days. The gameplay loop is solid and has a good foundation to build on. With the addition of a few expanded mechanics, this easily has the potential for a full release. Awesome job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! We had a lot of ideas but we had to rein it in for the jam timeline, but I'd like to keep poking at it in the future.

What a great fun game!!! Really enjoyed the gameplay loop. The pixel art and music/sfx are great too!

The only thing that confused me a little were the "same item/different prices" that existed in the game. I mean, realistically, it makes sense, but it confused me as a player xD

But great game, super fun.

Congrats!!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the kind words!

I did not have time for a proper tutorial unfortunately, so I will have to convey the differences in items better in the future. :)

Really loved this! The music and art are really fun and the gameplay is unique and satisfying (I love ripping people off.) + Really well polished! My only complaint is that sometimes you'll get a day where no one wants to buy anything, even if you have hype.

Developer

Hey thanks for playing and the kind words! I've gotten that same feedback, I'm definitely gonna have to explore some more options for weighting the events especially if you have a full shop.

Very impressive art.
