This is such a cool concept for a game, and I'm impressed with how much content you were able to include in only two weeks! The idea of sweeping the leaves away from the poems is really creative, and a cool take on the theme. The font was a little bit too small to read properly, though. I would have liked to read the poetry as it's being transcribed. There was also a point near the start where the dialogue and subtitles got thrown off from each other. Overall, a really cool game, and the voice acting was top tier! I'm curious to know more about this guy now :) Great entry!

Developer

thank you so much!
we have put a lot of effort into it, will soon release an update with more levels, a proper ending, more readable fonts and all that came through the reviews, so stay tuned!

Heyya! My partner was the one who played your game and he wanted me to post his comments about the game on his behalf. Here are some of his thoughts:

  • "Cool features like the transcribe"
  • "A bit too much handrails, guide the player to the actions instead of telling them what specific actions to take"
  • "Skip text, and don't wait for the speech to complete"

As for me, I found the act of sweeping the leaves relaxing (ใ……ยด ห˜ `)

I think it's admirable that you are sharing Giuseppe Ungaretti's poetry. My fave poem is Vigil (which was featured in the game, I believe)

Developer(+1)

oh, thank you both for the comment!
yeah, Veglia was featured in the Carso's level ๐Ÿ˜€
If you stick around, at the end of the jam we'll had more levels, a proper ending and some other nice updates!

Was a really interesting idea! It's impressive you managed to pull through 20-25 min narrative tale for a gamejam! Amazing work.

There were some points, where the dialogue that was being spoken and the subtitles were not the same, and especially as some one who does not speak the language, it confused me quite a  bit.

Also maybe it was just my gear, but the Italian audio almost had a weird metallic/robotic scrunch to it (maybe its some post processing effect that you have applied on it) which made it slightly harder to listen to it, while the English audio was pretty good.

Overall amazing work, and I learnt about someone new in this game! Great tribute

Developer

thank you very much, your comments are very much appreciated and i'm happy you could learn something new from the game!
If you're interested and stay around after the jam, you'll see new levels, a proper ending and some other updates!

All in all, I really liked this game. The concept of rediscovering a poet's poems as he travels from one memory to another is really nice. The way you implemented the autumn theme by having us sweep away leaves to discover poems was also excellent. The art was very good, as were the ambient sounds; each of these elements were quite additive to the overall experience. The overall gameplay left a little to be desired, but this is nothing that can't be fixed if you decide to work more on this game, and overall, I really enjoyed the experience of playing the game.

Below are some point form notes about the gameplay:

  • there were a couple small bugs
    • in the first scene, Carlo's voice line didn't appear for one of his text bubbles, and then his voice lines were offset by 1 after that point
    • in the scene where you're in the trenches (I actually played through this scene twice!):
      • I triggered the companion dialogue, but couldn't see the companion, so it took a while of just holding T and looking around to figure out where they were supposed to be
      • The first time I played this scene, it exited to the main menu after I completed it. At first I thought that was the end of the game, but the description mentions there are 6 levels, and this was only the 3rd for me.
      • The second time I played this scene, I saw a box? bench? flashing where the companion was supposed to be - but only if I was hovering over that exact spot
      • The second time I played, even though I swept literally all the leaves in the whole trench, I couldn't get the scene to continue forward
  • I think the game could benefit from having the professor's voice lines sped up (or, alternatively, not slowed down); right now, it feels like the pace is extra slow, which leaves me feeling like there's not a lot to do while I wait for them to talk to each other
  • I think the transcriptions also take too long; either having something else happen while you're transcribing, or speeding it up, or changing it from a "hold" to a "toggle" would help the pacing a lot. I also think the animation of the transcription was a bit awkwardly done; it looks good on its own, and the poems sound good on their own, but I can't really read the poem while he's transcribing it due to the way the animation is implemented. It would have been nice to be able to hear him and read the exact line he's speaking at the same time.
  • Instead of directing us on exactly what to do on some actions (such as "look at the coat and look away"), it would have been nice to have some more vague instructions. Something like "look around; is there anything else in this room to discover?"
  • In general, I think the limitation of "things change when you look away" was a little over-implemented. Having to look at the poem in order to transcribe was already enough. Maybe a couple of small things like having the chair move when you look away in the first scene, and having Pietro move the lantern in the trenches when you're not looking at him, are great additive gameplay. The rest felt a little overdone; do I have to look away in order for the next dialogue to occur? Maybe an interaction with the object would have been more impactful.
  • It would have been nice to be able to open the notebook and see a translation for the poems! Although the poems are beautiful, I can't understand what he's saying, which is a little bit sad :(

Again, though, I really enjoyed the concept and implementation of the theme! Most of my notes are for "quality of life", and especially for a gamejam game, I think this was splendidly done!

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your dedication in letting us know all the things that could have been done better and your nice compliments ๐Ÿ˜

If you stick around, we'll absolutely update the game just at the end of the game, and even later with all the suggestions you are all giving to us ๐Ÿ˜Š

Amazing job on the 2D visuals and 3D models! I know other people have clamored about it but I really loved the leaves effect on the menu screen. Models were solid as well overall in each scene, and being able to 3D rotate the notes was fun! My only two nitpicks were the amount of handholding for progression and holding down 'T' for transcribing. The transcribing is extremely slow, taking about 15-20 seconds each time. It's nothing terrible but it was a little annoying to have to hold the button down the entire time.

Being told every single action I had to do was a bit more annoying however. Honestly aside from maybe one line needed for each level you don't really need to include the rest of the instructions in each section. I wanted to explore each room and level for a bit and let things happen, but being told what to do each time took me out of a story a bit. The notes you can move and look around may be missed by some people if they're following the instructions completely as well.

That's really about it though, overall great work by everyone!

Lovely take on the limitation and great use of audio and voice acting to build a world. Could use a little more consideration for visual assets. You claim we are a 12th century poet then have characters in modern suits it's a little jarring. But overall good original concept. :3

Developer(+1)

thank you for your honest review!

In fact, it's said that is set in late 19th century - early 20th XD
But thank you, if you stick around at the end of the jam i'll upload a complete version with more levels, an ending and more readable fonts!

Oh my god you are so right of course, even if I was late I have no idea how I read twentieth as twelfth. I'm so sorry I fully retract my statement. ๐Ÿคฆ

Don't worry, can happen!

Great atmosphere here, and I was pleasantly surprised by actual voice acting in a jam! One note: my pet peeve is when games interrupt your actions for dialog, and that happened constantly here. I ended up not finishing the game due to frustration. Still, great submission and implementation of the theme and limitation :)

Developer

Thank you for your honest review!

I guess that's pretty much personal, so could not not much I guess ๐Ÿ˜…

But if you're interested, stay tuned as by the end of the jam I'll upload a complete version with more levels, a proper ending and a more readable font!

I love how the game's title is a play on "fog of war", which is especially apparent on the title screen. The game itself handled the theme really well, especially with how it was tied into the story. The broom, msweeping meahnic was nicely implemented and surprisingly satsfying to use too!

The graphics looked really good for a 3D web game, and I didn't experience any lag or stuttering throughout. The voice acting was really solid too and added a lot to the atmosphere. You guys clearly put a lot of care into this, and it shows!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much, I'm happy our dedication to the game could show itself this well!

Also, if you stay tuned by the end of the jam there will be an updated version with more levels, a finale and a better readable font!

Very nice game. Really liked wiping the leaves, very satisfying gamemech. And also the poetic elements gave the game such an incredible athmosphere. Wish i could understand more... but overall  very solid game!! Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much!

If you stay tuned after the jam ends there will be an updated version with more levels, a finale and more readable font!

Rahhhh honestly I loved how you used a real life Italian poet and used their life experiences in your game!! The game itself is very atmospheric and poetic, and the voice acting really made it feel alive, specially the french speaking one! It honestly made me wish I understood french. The only problem I felt that the cursive font was too small, I couldn't exactly read it properly :'))). I'm assuming they were poems by the real author.

And the way you used the limitation is so cool too!!!! 5 stars on Limitation honestly, I loved the looking away thing comes up thematically too. It's super impressive!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much, your words are very appreciated!

If you liked it, you should stay around, as at the end of the jam I'm gonna update it with some fixes, all the levels, finale and also readable font!
