Fun game that really appeals to me as a Slay the Spire addict. The mysterious vibe and nautical theme are intriguing and I like how it’s based on a public domain text, as well as the fact that even the most basic gameplay elements have an attached narrative. But other than that, there’s no gameplay mechanics that are really distinct from STS. I’m also still not quite sure what Powder does
I'll cover that in the next update: thank you for the feedback and yeah I wanted to do it pretty close to STS due to the constraints of the jam timeline since then I could focus more on vibes and polish. Act 2 is cooking and should include some more unique mechanics and clearer UX of what stuff does!
Cards with a fire effect are fueled by powder, so for every stack of powder when you play a card with a fire effect, it plays that effect once.
While I didn't quite make it to the end, I got far enough a few times that I felt I could give a good review. I didn't think I'd enjoy this game so much, but it's a VERY enjoyable experience. As an avid reader, I didn't mind the text portions a bit, and I loved the voice acting. It made the story feel a little more "real" to me, and I felt like the story changed just a little bit each time I played. Unfortunately, my luck with the enemy units was terrible. My first playthrough did really well until I hit the boss with 1 hp to my name. But I ran out of luck on my second and third playthroughs. I don't think the game is too challenging, but I feel like you could be in a tight spot if you don't balance your deck carefully or have some sort of strategy going; the second time I chose to focus on defense, and that didn't end well (I got mauled by three tough enemies at once). The third time, I went purely for damage and that didn't go well either (again, three enemies and two were always blocking while one attacked). Either way, this was a gem to play and I'm keeping the jam copy to play for a while. Thank you for this.
Aw thank you so much! I'm working on Act 2 (and a rebalance) to come out before Halloween so this kind of feedback is golden. Would you be interested in joining my discord and helping me test it?
Definitely! Sorry it took so long to reply, but I'd love to help test it for you.

I would say the start is a bit rough with the text walls and not fully understanding the mechanics of this card battler game. But after that it's fairly enjoyable. I found the game a little bit too easy as I was never in danger of dying and had full health most of the playthrough. I also skimmed most of the text so I certainly didn't get the full story nor the full theme of the game jam in my playthrough. Perhaps the story could be incorporated more than just the texts between fights. A little bit of visuals with snippets of the text could help more players engage more fully with the story and theme of the game. For example, one part mentioned an abandoned ship and you had the choice of rummaging around or leaving undisturbed could be a visual like the battle scene but instead of battling cards you could click on what you want to do like raid the ship or leave it. Again, the gameplay itself was fairly enjoyable if a little bit easy.
Thank you! I definitely put the balance more on the end of "streamable". I'll take that into account while working on Act 2 and I'll add some more art to the book too ☺️
I love roguelikes but I surely wouldn't have expected one in a fractured story telling-themed game jam :D Very interesting visuals and sound, and the deckbuilding/roguelike gameplay was also pretty good. I'm still not too sure how much it has to do with the game jam theme because I kinda skipped through the tons of texts, but it was definitely fun to play anyway!
How did you find the balance? The fractured story is definitely in the text and vibes rather than the combat 😂
I think the balance was pretty good, I got to the end on my first try but I was like half HP on the boss fight. Oh yeah but I think I also had this one card that dealt absurd amount of DMG and kinda 1-hit the boss too. But it felt pretty rewarding because it was a weird combo that made the card so strong I think. Definitely enjoyable!
